I live a part of Dallas where large families cram into 70+ year old houses with two bedrooms, while they build a five bedroom McMansion next door that sits vacant for a decade.

As an asian, Nimby needs to be banned in the US. Look at China, Singapore, Japan their neighborhoods are so lively & for single family homes, separate areas should be designated in suburbs.
@brev65329 күн бұрын
I don't know how it works in China or Singapore, but I love how zoning laws work in Japan. Municipalities set their own zoning maps, but the categories are set centrally by the national government. So a city can say "this area is low-density residential," but CAN'T say "you can't put a corner store in a low-density residential zone," because what can and can't go in low-density residential zones is up to the feds.
@goldie81929 күн бұрын
The cultural difference is so vast, it'll be hard to bridge. For example, it was normal before any pandemic for at least some people to mask in public while sick in many Asian countries, AFAIK. In the USA, some cities and states are BANNING mask-wearing, for any reason. I'm afraid we're going through a catastrophic phase of cultural brain damage.
@jackspaeth714426 күн бұрын
@@faeezparkar9731 so basically get rid of private land ownership? Eminent domain has legal restrictions and zoning only goes so far if ownership of land doesn’t change… not sure how you can “ban” nimbys. Especially when the nimbys are the government.
@faeezparkar973126 күн бұрын
@jackspaeth7144 Correct me if I am wrong, but nimby even applies beyond your own property, right? For example, a neighborhood can vote against a corner store or a mall across the street & can get it removed from there, or if a bunch of people in a neighborhood protest against 10 storey building, the project is canceled.
@jamalgibson813925 күн бұрын
@@jackspaeth7144 This has nothing to do with land ownership. The government isn't going to tell you to bulldoze your house and build an apartment, but you shouldn't be able to tell your neighbor (within reason) that they can't bulldoze their house and build an apartment if they want to.

For those that say it lacks parking. The street with the blue multiplex has homes with garage and driveways large enough for 3 cars plus 2 street side parking places per home.

I hate the zoning line. Zoning is the last issue in the US. Because developers here will cut every corner, meaning multifamily homes in the US have paper thin walls and really terrible use of common spaces. Nobody wants to live in them in the US. It's something you're forced into when you can't afford your own space. Minneapolis also didn't achieve this with zoning alone. They poured a lot of money into new home construction in general to do this. They built more homes.

Strong Towns advertises on their site $2k to $3k per video for non-staff members to contribute content. I'd also like to note that the decision to make membership a paid subscription is very purposeful to our strategy. You can become a member for $1 a year so it's not really a financial barrier, but it does add a huge amount of legitimacy to the membership base.

@Churro_Douglas I am a member, to be clear. I agree. But I mean for your own brand, there are a lot of very well established creators who don't necessarily have as much to gain by being under a new label as strong towns would from the visibility. Idk not my business. I just think you're a great organization and resource and would love for more people to be exposed.

This also leads to wealthy people owning a majority of the properties and renting them out to lower income people, resulting in lower classes never being able to afford their own home.

So, in essence, you're never happy. Roch people own a large, under-utilized home. Rage. Rich person builds an apartment complex, or a multi dwelling structure on the same property and leaves it to 5 families. Rage. I guess we should just turn over all private property to the government and dwell in eastern bloc concrete tombs

I don't think we need more suburban sprawl, or more parking. I think we need to change to better rail systems linking major hubs and then utilize remote work so that people don't HAVE TO live jammed next to each other so that they have a shorter, still stressful commute to a carpeted cubicle where they spend their day. Build infrastructure, get a laptop, sit in your garden at home, wherever that home may be. You don't need a parking lot. You may not need a car. It's a different world.

Minneapolis has had roughly the same population for 30 years now. Demand hasnt changed much. That means pricing is more based on supply, income, investment and inflation. Biggest curse on supply is the increase of rented homes. Adding in duplexes and triplexes might temporarily lower the price, but it doesnt fix the issue if its not owner occupied.
@birdrocketАй бұрын
If that was the case, you’d expect to see the rental market becoming cheaper over those same 30 years, though that isn’t what happened. From 1990 to 2020, Minneapolis’ population grew by about 15%. The Minneapolis metro area grew by about 20%. The MSP area also added about 500k jobs over the same period. It’s also just not logically sound to point to the population of a place remaining stagnant and say that means there must be no demand. If there is demand, but no increase in supply, you’re not going to see an increase of the population.
@xRatch3t91xАй бұрын
@birdrocket Based off the same job info, incomes of the area should be rising, otherwise there is no incentive to populate and work in the metro area. Centralizing the businesses is what causes high demand. Higher demand is good for home and rental value. I don't have very good thought-to-literacy conversion. I guess my thought process was more on track with the laws incentivizing rentals and increased poverty. Most people don't have income to waste on renting.

The only reason you need a car in the first place is because single family housing has spread cities out to the point many are no longer walkable. Denser housing reduces the need for so much parking, and in turn makes it better for those who continue to drive anyway. This helps you
