It amazes me the amount of respect that these players have for each other. Except for the "pests" who I probably wouldn't want to meet. I never knew that there was so much depth to just beating someone up in a sport.

There’s the respect that both of you would tear eachother apart for your team. The last goalie I fought went after my teammate who was a player and I jumped in, I had 50 pounds on him but he beat me to the ice, and afterwords i had the respect of him and my team for battling. That’s why I love hockey, I found honour in losing.

Hockey is a sport where you can fight a dude and then go have a beer after the game cause everything is left on the ice.

I grew up playing for 20 years into the collegiate level. There really is respect and hockey players as a whole are genuine and wholesome folk. I might have spent a game angry at a player on the other team and maybe gotten into a fight or two but at the end of the game you always line up and shake hands no matter what, and tell each other “Good game, man.” That shit stays ON the ice, not off it.

Rick Rypien RIP, was a small middle weight in the NHL who was a trained boxer. The way he fought guys WAY bigger than him was a sight to see!

The Code is still alive but a bit different now. Teams don’t sign players just to be goons (guys who can skate and hit people). Now all the players need to be skilled. My favorite team had no “goon” on their team but they can hold their own if it comes to it.

One major rule change is that helmets can't be taken off anymore with the league cracking down on player safety. Even if it comes off in play the player either has to put it on quickly or get off the ice failure to do so in a certain timeframe will result in a penalty. The don't hit the star rule is kept not even because of the fighting but because hockey players will then take out your star player so essentially then you've ruined your teams chance at winning. Fights also aren't even about winning it's about sticking up for your teammates and showing we aren't going to accept it. If you are near a teammate who takes a cheapshot the nearest person their should immediately jump in. Failure to do so results in an angry fan base and coach at the team as it's a big sign that something is wrong in the team. If you don't have teammates righting these wrongs other teams will take notice and exploit that weakness to injure your players etc. The most protected though is definitely the Rookies and goalie those are big no's, even just touching the goalie can start a brawl I don't think they train to fight as most ironically most hockey players are also big fans of golf which is such a peaceful sport in comparison. If you like the fighting aspect you should check out some of the rivalries. They have to be the bloodiest and most violent out of any sport. Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche, lasted about 8 years and started in the regular season after Claude Limieux made a dangerous hit on a Red Wings player. Most games started and ended with fights as they competed for the Stanley Cup. Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadians this one spanned decades starting when the teams first met in 1929. Peak was in 1955 when a Canadians player was suspended for hitting a Bruins player. This enraged the Canadians who rioted and caused like a hundred thousand dollars worth of damage and caused a tear gas bomb to go off. Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. The rivalry supposedly started in 1895 and included Wayne Gretzky who is to this day called The Great One. This rivalry is still going strong. These are just a few of the most notorious rivalries but their are probably dozens of them. You should definitely react to the players or refs mic'd up there's so much respect. Even between fighters they'll fight and then congratulate each other on a good fight. There's even a clip of two guys fighting and then in the penalty box's they just chatting about how unfit they are and they'll have to go train together. I think it's because a player knows what they've done to instigate the fight or it's just a pre-meditated fight to hype up their teams or crowd. No such thing as backing down Alex Ovechkin was once challenged by a Rookie and because he didn't want to hurt the Rookie he knocked him out with one punch. Fighting is about respect and the Vets will usually only accept fights from rookies after they've been in a few fights themselves. It's a big deal for even just standing against someone known for fighting or someone bigger than you which is why smaller players will challenge bigger guys and the new guys will try to get into fights. Arber Xhekaj is a rookie who had a lot of success this year in getting into and winning his fights against bigger guys unfortunately though he recently had a season ending injury. He fought Pat Maroon this year a player 12 years his senior and won. He also fought Nicolas Deslauriers a player ten years his senior who he lost to but Nicolas was respectful and gave Arber a fair chance it was probably a huge moment for Arber as Nicolas inspires the way Arber plays. Arber got into 7 other fights this season in his Rookie year. At the time of his injury the guy led his team in penalty minutes, definitely plays with the old style of hockey. The line brawl you saw is part of the Devils and Rangers rivalry known as the battle of Hudson river which reignited in the 2019 draft after Devils got the first pick and chose Jack Hughes whilst Rangers got 2nd pick and chose Kaapo Kakko the rivalry started because the Rangers fans cheered when Devils chose Jack. Needless to say Jack has far outperformwed Kaapo with Jack having his 40th goal of this season and Kaapo only recently getting his 40th career goal. 😂 The player licking the guys face is Brad Marchand most commonly known as the Rat. He's a great player but constantly does illegal stuff. Although he is hilarious on social media. He has licked several players and attempted to and has kissed some of his opponents until the league told him to stop. Edit: sorry for the info dump😂. Fighting with gloves on is a 2 minute penalty for roughing although refs mostly let this go. 5 minute penalty for fighting without gloves and then extra penalties can be added on for instigation etc. In rare cases it'll lead to a game misconduct penalty which is an ejection from the game and 10 minute penalty

How do you fight with that respect? My understanding, 40-Something Canadian, it's not much to do with Hockey. C. Marcus Aurelias or Stoicism

I started playing hockey at 5 years old and outside of the military, I played until I was 30. I had picked up my 7th concussion. Fighting was also used to swing momentum in a game. In my day anyway, I'm 67 so it's been a minute. Conditioning was major. I had a leg press of 925 lbs. And a 335 bench. At 5'10" 180 lbs. Never pick a fight with an ex-hockey player.😂😂😂😂

Yes, you can really hit, which accounts for no teeth, broken jaws and concussions. You don’t need boxing lessons, Canadians have played hockey for hundreds of years, it’s just part of the sportCanadian kids start skating at about 3 - 4 years of age and start hockey at 5.
