The number 4 play is as much about the context as it is about the goal itself. Crosby became well known in Canada as a teenager, and was quickly being hyped as the next Gretzky. He had just been drafted 1st overall by the Penguins, and was playing against a Canadian team for the first time. Also 2005-06, Sid’s rookie season, was the first year the NHL started using shootouts to decide games instead of having ties. There had been a lockout the previous year that caused the cancellation of the entire season, so this was a moment that represented a new era for the league

The best player of his generation for sure only Alex Ovechkin comes as close to him for the most dominant player between the mid-2000s-2010s. Still great player. Voted for the last four years by the NHL players as the best all-around player in the league (world)--not Connor, not (fill in the blank), but Sidney Crosby, because he is still a great offensive player but plays a great "200-ft game" and is good at everything, faceoffs, puck possession etc.--and he is 36!
@bailee912 Жыл бұрын
To really understand how good Sid actually is, you have to watch the video “100 best crosby plays” or watch an entire game. He does all the little things. He is defensively solid and makes his teammates better. If you understand hockey, you know why he is considered on of the best even though he doesn’t have as many crazy flashy highlights as mcdavid or ovie. He also was the youngest captain to ever lead a team to a Stanley cup and he scored the golden goal. You should check out Evgeni Malkin. Geno has played with Sid since they were both rookies (pretty much). He could have gone to any other team and been the number one guy, but he decided to stay in Pittsburgh to play with Crosby.

Crosby is one of the best players in the history of the NHL. Holds the record as the youngest Captain to win the Cup. Is the only player to be in the triple gold club (i.e. a player who has won a Cup, and Olympic gold, and a World Championship gold) who Captained all three of his teams. He’s also won World Juniors gold and World Cup gold. But my favorite random stat is that for all 18 years of his career he’s been more than a point per game player. The only other player in the history of the NHL who’s had a longer streak is Wayne Gretzky at 19 seasons.

Sid's game isn't very flashy, but he does every aspect of the game extremely well. Incredibly smart, great vision, fantastic work ethic. He's also super strong on his skates, protects the puck well, has some moves, good wall work, good at faceoffs, and competitive as hell - he also has one of the best backhand shots of all time. And apparently backhanders are harder for goalies to read coming off the stick. McDavid is faster and has more offense, but I'd still take Crosby's career over what I think McDavid's will turn out to be. Crosby currently sits at #15 on the all-time scoring list. By the end of next season, he will be in the top 10. If he stays healthy and has the desire to keep playing, he should finish in the top 5. He even has a theoretical chance at top-3. Potentially even top-2. But Gretzky's record is still ridiculously out of reach. Crosby would almost have to double his entire career total to reach Wayne.

Fun fact about Pittsburgh sports teams- Pens originally wore blue but then changed to black& gold to match the other two teams. The Steelers were originally called The Pirates-now the BB team name. Steelers are only team in the league to have their logo on only one side of their helmet.

When Wayne Gretzky retired in 1999, the NHL was desperate for a superstar to replace him. Numerous players had been touted as "The Next One", but failed to live up to the hype.
