F1 is much safer than it was 50 years ago, but it's still an incredibly dangerous sport. Remember what happened to Jules Bianchi a decade ago, Romain Grosjean's miraculous escape from the crash where his fuel tank exploded, and countless recent close calls where debris and other cars have caused near-misses which could have been fatal in marginally different circumstances, including several which caused significant injuries? Considering that there's a significant chance of F1 live-broadcasting a driver _dying_ I really don't think naughty words are a significant problem. There is an implicit agreement between the drivers (who risk their lives for our entertainment, but earn millions of dollars and become international celebrities in return), F1's management, and the audience, that the risk is acceptable. They're willing to traumatise us one way, but not willing to mildly upset us in another? F1's priorities don't seem right. If they want to coddle us and treat us like young children, F1 shouldn't even exist.

I don’t think this has anything to do with actual swearing. Rather, Ben probably took it as a driver defying his mandates right after he made it. It’s a powerplay. Ironically, they chose to make an example of one of the drivers who doesn’t give a damn. It’s similar to the situation with Lewis, except Lewis wants to stay in F1 to try for an 8th title, whereas Max has stated he has already accomplished everything he wanted and is only here to have fun, which he has not been having since last year. Since last year, Max has been considering leaving F1 altogether, so it’s not a good idea for the FIA to provoke him when he clearly no longer has anything holding him to the sport.

Thing is, the Arabic culture has a completely unique set of morals which are generally far stricter than most of the countries represented by the drivers and constructors. I can understand the FIA president was probably personally very offended by a high profile driver swearing. In the rest of the world, swearing has become the norm and is generally overlooked. Whether it's right or wrong is for others to decide, but it shows a total mismatch between the FIA and those actually on the track.

Max Verstappen/Marshawn Lynch: "I'm only here so I don't get fined"
@oysteinsoreide4323Ай бұрын
This case can make Verstappen retire early. He is a very straight forward guy. And will probably have a hard time to limit his swearing over radio.
@scottwisner5831Ай бұрын
There are times when the FIA broadcasts a driver comment during a race where they “bleep” out so much that you can’t tell what the driver says (usually Yuki). Why would they do that if it wasn’t to spice up the broadcast? The responsibility is on the broadcasters. I’ll end with a movie quote, “If you don’t like it, Get Thee to a F#!&ing Nunnery!!”.

Good presentation about something that the FIA should never have blown 'out of proportion'. In reality, it's the F1 broadcasters who are the guilty party for not 'Beeping out' Max's profanity.

FIA: We don't like swearing and it should stop. Max: says the car was F'd Stewards: You get 1 day of community service due to FIA rule Me: WT? - you had nor clearly defined rules around warnings and punishments. So how can you just drop this. JOKE. Also me: WT? is Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of a motorsport rules body doing at every F1 race, feeling the need to impose himself all over the F1 event as though he is part of the show. It seems to me he's inflating his position and role.

They should have banned the jewelry because it's cringe. You also see all these football players who want to be blinged out while playing. Can you go without for the time you're performing? It's like they're children and the more you tell them no, the more they want to do it

Max isn't the only one to get this treatment. Seb Ogier got fined 30000 euros at Acropolis Rally Greece for giving out about how the FIA didn't increase intervals between cars due to dust effecting visibility.

Even Mick Schumacher dropped a few F bombs, and typically Mick was coming out on team radio with stuff like, "OH Fuhhh... crap." Mick one time literally got upset on the radio and just started saying, "BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP!" He basically had the team radio of a goofy black lab puppy, and even he did the old F word a few times.

Honestly the punishment could have been easily monetary, making it comunnity service feels weirdly meant to be humilliating on the FIA's part

Suleman wants power and control. But this is in an era where F1 doesn’t need the FIA. Adopting/creating a new sporting authority would not be burdensome. His judgement in going after Hamilton and Verstappen to assert his dominance in the current era where they arguably have more clout than anyone else is ill advised and has failed. Him quarrelling with FOM and threatening to negatively impact their cashflow and market cap really should have the FIA BoD concerned. Should swearing be broadcast? That’s really up to what the country standards dictate. It seems to be a good business decision. Should those that want to protect their virgin ears be able to watch a clean feed? Sure. There’s no reason a PG broadcast couldn’t be made simultaneously. But the whole notion of kids watch this or it’s not professional are hollow arguments. On the first count, any given race day can easily be a day where someone’s death is broadcast live on TV. (How wholesome) On the second count, in my personal experience executives, doctors, politicians often have a little Gunther in them behind closed doors.

The thing is, MBS, you can't clamp down on colourful langauge because it's a necessary evil, if you are racing or even driving normally and something goes south of your intended plan, it's completely normal to swear, it's a necessary evil. Do people remain calm when someone else brake checks you or drives into you (like Vettel in Baku 2017)? I wouldn't.
