I'm Steve Gilbert from Clifton Forge Va. We live in the western part of the state, called the Alleghany Highlands, mountains in all directions. I retired in 2018 after working 43 and 1/2 years for a paper mill called Westvaco. I started out as a laborer, then advanced to a bulldozer pushing coal and bark. In 1976 I started a 4 year apprenticeship to become a journeyman Pipefitter. I worked the next 38 years as a Pipefitter. I found your channel about a month ago, and since then if my tv is on I'm watching your videos. I love them. You have my dream life ( land, equipment, the mini cabin, and a beautiful wife with a great smile ). Hunter is special and I love that you include him and his quirks ( by saying quirks I mean things like him wanting to finish any thing he does ) in your videos. This is my first ever comment on a Video. I truly enjoy watching You and Your family

Mike, we are sending more hot weather your way from here in Central Arkansas. It's about 83 outside now (noon) and the humidity is about 80 percent. We had heavy rain the past several weeks. 5 inches in the past 3 days. Love that cherry log. You have a winner there. Cherry wood here is selling for $6.10 per board ft in lots of 1 to 9. Only $5.50 for 10 to 99 ft. You have a nice little nest egg there in that log. Thanks for the videos, Mike. We love them.

A gas and diesel fuel trailer makes a lot of sense. Always easy to hook up and tow to refill without forklifting, and easy to store where you want it. 12v or hand crank to pump. I'm building one up for our TN farm. Great channel, great content, keep it up.

Mike, The sawyer out in Eastern Pennsylvania I have been buying lumber from, years ago, I was on the phone with him asking about some cherry, and he said he had about 300 board feet of it cured, and available. I asked him how good it was, and he replied, "Well it's not that northern Pennsylvania cherry, but it's pretty nice." He is in his 80's now. I used some to frame out a window expansion in my kitchen behind the sink. I needed it to match some Sapele mahogany that I made the big awning window out of. I spent about a week playing around with different stains to get a good match. It looks really nice though. That cherry log you have there is magnificent. You always know you have a sweetheart when you see it, and you get an ache in your chest as in eat your heart out kind of ache. Love your channel. I'm working on some maintenance issues around the house right now, but when I get it done, I am going to be cleaning up my woodworking shop, one started by my father in the basement, and I tore the wall out and made it a pretty good sized and equipped just right. Can't wait to make the You Tube video about it. A lot of ideas will be in there that were garnered after years of updating, improving, and realizing the smart way of doing things. I'm really looking forward to you seeing it. I watch your channel religiously. Love it.

Mike, I utilize a 55gal drum with a hand crank pump, with filter/ water separator for my fuel. I mounted it on a pallet so I can lift it in my truck when I need to fill it, and then move it to where it needs to go. Super simple and nice having 55 gals on hand.

Hey Mike, We get non ethanol gas and off-road diesel delivered to the house. I have a 250 gallon tank with a hand pump for each and they come fill it up when ever I call. They have a winter mix for the diesel that has a lower gel point. That really help with cold start.

BUYING FUEL: First you need to check with the state or county to see how much you can haul without permits and the type of containers that are required. Then decide if you want to go pick it up or have it delivered. You could use the excavator to load and unload the tanks in the dump trailer. We use totes like you get to store firewood in. We go get used motor oil for fuel for our steam locomotive and can transport several containers as long as they are 300 gallons or less using the totes. If you plan to have it delivered check with the wholesale distributors in your area and some of then may supply the tanks. Hope this helps.

For fuel storage it depends how much money you want to spend. I am in the process of installing two 550-gallon double wall ASTs that I picked up off a project that were never used (and free). They can be expensive. You can use 275-gallon heating oil tanks. They are relatively cheap especially used but in good condition. Just make sure you get some sort of secondary containment in case they leak. You can use IBC totes for short term diesel storage but it will eventually break down the plastic and leak. Check with your local fuel delivery companies, they may sell or rent you a tank as well as fill your tanks up for you.

A local guy does bundle firewood, his way is he used the web bag he buys by the roll. He had a stand with 2 5gal buckets with the bottoms cut out, he cut his bag to twice length and ties one end than stretches the bag over the bucket and puts the bucket in to his stand. He than loads the bucket till it is full and than lifts the bucket and the wood is bagged. He can bag 30 to 40 bags an hour. That may an idea for your bundling operation!

For my Diesel tank, I use a 250 Gal fuel tank that’s been on the farm since 1988. It has Tuthill/Fill Rite 115 VAC High Flow Pump 1" Hi Flow Automatic Nozzle 901 Meter FR711VA (see Rural King) or me that looks identical. Dad replaced the pump around 1995, purchased from Tractor Supply. I have diesel fuel delivered as needed For my Gas, I have a used aluminum 110 Gal. “L”-Transfer Tank (cleaned, painted and labeled) in the bed of my one pickup truck. It has a new Tuthill/FillRite 12 Volt DC Pump with Automatic Nozzle SD1202GA (purchased from Rural King). I use it on every Gas engine including the wife’s car; I go through 80-100 Gal/month.

I stole your diesel idea for both my diesel and gas. Two 50 gallon tanks which I spray painted a band on the side and stencilled in a label. Red for gas with “gas” written on and yellow for diesel with “diesel” written on. Both mounted on custom made skids. I can actually get both tanks in the back of my pickup at the same time so a few trips a year to the station and I’m all set for the ATVs, side by side, splitter, mowers, and the tractors. Works great! It’s a tough pill to swallow at the pump (filling up with 50 gallons of diesel and 50 gallons of premium gas) but I never run out anymore and i only have to touch a gas can when I need mixed fuel for the chainsaws/trimmers. Keep up the great work!

Mike, my father-in-law used to buy those outer log bark layers from a guy doing lumber like you. Cherry, oak, maple and ash. It dried and burned nicely in the fireplace. You obviously, can’t charge what you do for the split logs but I’m sure you’d have a ready market for these sides with bark instead of putting them in the burn pile.
