My mechanic wanted to sell me a five-speed first generation Tundra, for 4k. I'm kicking myself up to now for not buying it.

yeah!! , I agree, many old vehicule got much overrated, thanks to social media, not especially infulencers, but the online sale made people aware of their value at first, but also because of inflation, many car sellers tried to make profit of that overrated reputation for Toyotas and Hondas for instance, the worst part of the phenomenal is the ignorant who just pays for rusted junk thinking he's buying a tresor!

Good statement. I think it's good if old products, be they cars or other, are kept in use and not scrapped if they still have some value.

I think it might be more than just the "Overland Tax". The American consumer is unable to afford, or unwilling to buy a new car. Therefore the demand of used, usually, Toyota trucks and SUVs have sky rocketed making them more expensive. Yet, sometimes you are in the right place at the right time, and a friend from college gave me his 97 RAV4 for free last year. Another thing to mention, I bought a 96 4Runner for good money in January 2020, and 2 years later after COVID, and the increase of overlanding I sold it for more than I paid. In Fall of 2020 I bought a 87 Toyota Pick-Up, and would go on to do the same. It is hard to tell what came first, but like anything there is multiple factors at play. Yet the overarching reason for inflated values with 90s and early 2000s Trucks and SUVs, is scarcity. There just is not that many clean, worthwhile examples left. They must be preserved! I appreciate your videos!

Rather than jumping on the bandwagon for that next car purchase (which I admit can be hard to resist) perhaps, whatever car you have now, the best option is to drive on as long as possible. Some day even a young car will become an old car! Take advantage of what you already own. 🚙🚙🚙🛻🚙🛻

I used to have a 2003 tacoma. I miss it. My old Toyota is now selling for more than it cost when it was new. Toyotas hold their value but because of the outrageous prices of new vehicles and the interest rates here in the US, it causing vehicles like your rav 4 or my old tacoma to sky rocket because its still cheaper than a new car. I watched the news and they said the average monthly payment on a new vehicle is nearly $1200. Thats not on you or anyone else. The auto industry is out of control and hard working folks cant afford that. Thats a mortgage payment: not a vehicle payment. I want another one but NO WAY am I paying that kind of money for a 20+ year old vehicle. I dont even know if a bank would lend you that kind of money for a vehicle that old. If I do get another one, I will order it directly from a Japan importer. Better deals and much more options to chose from.

2020-2024 will be known as the "sucker era" in the automative scene. It's insane how much those vehicle absolutely MOONED in such a short time. I was surprised cars like the old Xterra or Hummer H2 never blew up with the 4Runner and gang. I just bought a Ram Classic, for WAY more than I should have paid.... but it'll get the job done and it's one of the last HEMIs you could get! V8, 8ft bed two seater, a true work truck. How much did you pay for the Rav4? I bought a 2003 Pontiac vibe a couple years ago for $1,400!

The used car market also got really weird during the pandemic, it's gotten a bit better but cars that were going for $1-2k before are still $3-6k 👀 I gave away my beloved Saturn a few years ago when all of the listings were $200-500... Now it's hard to find them under 2 grand!

Yep you and Scotty Kilmer keep inflating the Toyota prices because everybody on the internet think they are gold. An average person can't afford or find a decent low mileage vehicle. In my area all you ever see on lots are "problematic cars" the ones we are warned to stay far away from.
