I belive Rifujin no Magnote's own comment (author note) describes this story the best. "Mushoku Tensei is the tale of Rudeus Greyrat." Myshoku Tensei, is a biography. Rudeus isnt the chosen one. Just a simple cog in the machine. Most of the major scenes will happen after his time passes, but we will not be there to see it. This is simply a world in which Rudeus learnt to live, and we accompanined him on his journey.

@theguyyouhate Жыл бұрын
@@valenten89 i think that's a weird definition of "chosen one". both needing to see the payoff and being nearly unstopable. most chosen ones aren't unstopable(i mean overpowered MC has certainly become more common lately but it's still not the majority of "chosen one"-MCs) and whille most of them live to see the results of their actiosn really pay off that isn't a requirement. however the fact that gods(or at the least god-like beings) chose Rudeus and guide him? yeah THAT makes him a "chosen one".
@Amraathegamer Жыл бұрын
But he isn't, tho. Who is the chosen one between Jesus or Mary. Because Rudeus is basically Mary of his world. Rudeus isn't the one who will fight the big bad. It hasnt even been born yet. Rudeus won't be there to fight it or see its end. If you go by literal 'chosen' one, then sure, but he is not the hero of the world or its story.
@SUNOSidk Жыл бұрын
Very small tidbits of spoilers just to end the argument: Rudeus is the main character in HIS story but he isn't the chosen one at all. He is merely a collateral in a much bigger plot surrounding the world of Mushoku Tensei. He wasn't even supposed to be in the world, he was dragged into it when Nanahoshi was summoned. The three high schoolers that were about to get hit by the truck are the people that the story revolves around. There's a reason why Orsted doesn't recognize Rudy. There's a reason why Kishirika Kishirisu called him gross. It will all make sense eventually. The bottom line is, he's just some dude who contributed to something much greater than himself. He's brilliant. He's really amazing but at the end of the day, he's just a "side character" in the world.

My favorite part about this season was at the end of it, since it realy shows what's on Rudeus' mind. The thing that cures his E.D. is not the same thing that cures his trauma. His E.D. is cured by a random aphrodisiac, but his trauma was only cured when, next day, after getting out of bed, he sees Sylphy again. Heck, he's terrified when he can't find her at first. The thing about his trauma is that it wasn't just a fear of intimacy. Rudeus, who spent around 50 years longing for his first time, lost someone dear to him immediatly after doing it. It didn't happen with a random girl, he spent many years traveling with Eris at this point and his feelings for her were genuine. Yeah, he is a degenerate, but at the end of the day he lacked any experience, and having that kind of first time can really mess with a guy's head. Soft jokes aside, this is unironically one of the most human arcs i've ever seen in anime. it's just a natural human issue that is often not talked about even in real life, let alone in a fantasy anime. It's the kind of problem that you or someone you know might deal with. I'm glad Mushoku Tensei is willing to try these unique ways of storytelling, and i can't wait for the next cour and, hopefully, the next seasons.

There's no need to do anything special, just keep going to work, school or whatever your daily routine is. Finally a good take on this anime. It grinds my gears when some immature people completely write this anime off because the MC doesn't fix the typical "perfect" MC with a tragic backstory that happens TO him, rather it's a MC who IS the tragic part of his story, he's real, his problems exist in this world, being bullied, a shut in, a degenerate, seeing girls as s*x objects because of his obvious p*rn addiction from his past life. No one's asking you to like who he is, but rather the genuine effort he puts in to change, and like you said, in real life, change doesn't happen over night, we relapse into bad habits. He isn't a great person, especially at the beginning. People who write him off and don't think he even deserves a chance to redeem himself, either lack self-awareness to their own short-comings, or lack the ability to put themselves in the shoes of someone who has done terrible things yet still wants to be change. Putting labels on people, rarely ever helps anyone except yourself.

I think season 2 was great. Like most things in life, it usually takes something crazy to happen before we introspectively look at ourselves. Psychological ED was a really good plot device because it made Rudeus way more mindful of his perverted side and how he handles intimate relationships. The Sara relationship was tragic because he was freaking out and trying to figure out why this problem is happening. This wasn't some 10 year marriage where you can openly talk with your partner about your problems, this was a new budding relationship and he had zero experience. Soldat being a homie, and that scene where he's on his knees and grabs the knife *chefs kiss*. Also, having to watch Elinalise and her curse. Like yeah we see the panty shrine a few times, however he's using it as a nostalgic motivational tool like someone praying to a dead relatives tombstone, and not some perverted jack off monument. He idolizes Roxy. People forget this was a dude that was severely bullied into being a shut in incel. So his emotional growth stopped during his school days, replaced with hatred of everything in the world moving forward from that point, and now he's crossing that bridge again and re-learning how to be a functioning emotional person. I don't mind slow pacing as long as the character development and storytelling is good, and it really is with this show. Violet Evergarden, Frieren, etc... are good slower paced, world building, shows.

4 moments of season 2 really personify peak story telling, the suicide scene at 9:50, Rudy's friendship with the rival guild leader after they hated each other, when he meets the Dragon God's accomplice and finally, when he almost went into another psychotic episode before Sylvy returned in the last episode. I really love how his real world problems still exist in the new world. All too often in isekai (and anime as a whole) you get a shitty mc that suddenly becomes "perfect" just because they're in a new place. On top of that, adding actual problems humans have and plot devices beyond "Big evil demon lord dramatically terrorizes small village with cute girls" really makes things more relatable. 7:44 To add to this and this is very important to understand in my opinion when it comes to MT: Rudeus' main problem in his previous life was that while He did grow up, He did not mature. What I mean by this is his lack of experience in life that collectively result in someone acquiring the wisdom of an adult. In other words pre-isekai Rudeus is the literal definition of a "man-child". There is actually a good ANN interview with the author where He explains that He had an experience where in his childhood he was really good at something but ended up not pursuing this hobby any further out of fear of losing/not being the best at it. He wanted to quit while he was the best. He ended up regretting this a lot once he grew up... He then turned this feeling into a story where the MC gives up on everything he is failing at: From hobby like computer science (losing a programming tournament) to going to school (after the bullying incident). And the author wanted to imagine how it would shape a person if He takes this to the extreme. Write about someone giving up on interacting with people, burn down all bridges and live in isolation for 20 years (between 14 and 34). This is how you get the despicable and creepy MC of Mushoku Tensei. He acts creepy because that is his frame of reference. I mean we are talking about a guy who only interacted with woman through porn games. He lacks that expeience that healthy people has: First love, doing crazy stuff with friends that you regret later, getting in to a huge fight with your family in your teens... etc.... Things that you look back to later with equal amounts of cringe and nostalgia. That cringe feeling comes from you being mature now. (Just think of all the things the Trash Taste boys are talking about with cringe, like liking certain anime that was perfectly normal 12 years ago but now its just mid and cringe....) In other words Mushoku Tensei is a story about a guy growing up for the second time physically and maturing for the first time. This is why season 2 is so important to the wider story, because it covers that chaotic transition period in everybody's life (roughly between 14-25) where they shed their childhood to attain maturity through their chaotic experiences. For this reason, season 2, with all of its weird plot points, and Rudeus with all of his flaws, are one of the most important arcs in the entire story. And it only gets Peak-er from here on out. P.S. For those who stil did not realize: ED is a thickly laid metaphor to his low self esteem which was the reason he kept giving up on stuff in his previous life.

SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF MUSHOKU TENSEI SERIOUSLY DON'T READ PAST THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE LN OR THE WN For me, the moment Rudy went from being an annoying piece of shit to a character I genuinely liked was when he sees Paul die. It's like the world comes crashing down on him and he realizes the sheer weight of his actions in his previous life, the connection he could've had with his parents, how horrible he was by being a parasite to them and not even showing up to their funeral. He realizes all this just as he realizes he genuinely loved Paul, and it's heartbreaking. I think the most telltale sign of maturity is when someone can look at their past actions and realize how stupid they were, and that's the moment Rudy looked at his entire past life and realized just how much he messed up. It's the tipping point that turns Rudy from someone who barely takes his new life seriously (to the point where he thinks getting to lose his virginity is "good enough" and he can die happy after that) to someone who would not only set the world ablaze for his family, but kneel and beg for them too.

I think this was the cour that LN readers knew would filter battle shounen fans. This is a story where the characters drive the action and not vice versa. We are entering the two most painful arcs of the series, some of the most raw, dramatic stuff that will ever be put in anime so there needs to be some break in action to set up the players. Next cour will change the pace around again with a mixture of family drama, a lot of action and adventure, and more tragedy/drama. Rudeus gets put through the ringer again. Season 3 will be pure pain until a certain point probably around the end of the season. At that point, the anime will be recognized as a medium-defining masterpiece if the directors do their job. If they fumble it, it will be sad because it will waste such good source material.
@MajinOthinus Жыл бұрын
It's not driven by the characters though, it's driven by nothing. You could easily cut the whole arc down to a third or fourth of the length and still get every relevant scene and character development with full context.
@kizufan8726 Жыл бұрын
The conflict is internal. The whole school laughed at his penis when they tied him up. His first sexual experience and she ghosts him and would anything but ED make sense if your trying to make the story feel "real". He fails to realize how deeply his self-esteem was damaged until he tried to sleep with Sara. The prostitute set forth the path of self-discovery. His breakthrough was discovering that the prostitute was right. He needs to be with someone that he completely trusts. Thus, in the last episode, they contrast the empty cup of wine with the spilled wine in the scene with Eris. Regret vs. no regret. He then takes responsibility for another, a key step to taking life seriously, which was his goal since episode 1. Not all struggle is external. That's odd to say about an anime but is typical in other literature. The next cour will have an external struggle, pure pain, and drama but it will be driven by another internal struggle and step towards character development. The third season will be intense action, even more pain, lore and drama as he finally has no choice but to make difficult decisions to achieve his goal of taking life seriously.@@MajinOthinus

Because the characters (especially the main character) are realistically flawed and have actual depth and complexity like real people would. Mushoku Tensei is really good (I'm reading the LN) but in my opinion Re: Zero is still number one. Rudy is a character about the opportunity to have a fresh start and it is amazing, but Subaru is a character about accepting and loving himself despite his failures and his suffering. I think Subaru's development is incredible and incredibly important. Both are crazy good and I wish the rest of the genre had followed their example instead of being corrupted by Sword Art Online and end up filled with Kirito clones. I hate SAO with a passion even though I watched and rewatched most of it when I was young. Thank you for including the clip at 9:38. One of the most powerful moments of the season and it gets overlooked. Soldat went from being a total asshat to being one of the most down-to-earth and steadfast friends Rudy can call on any time. That's the unseen power of Rudy's character growth and impact on the world. Slowing down the pace enough for you to see the small ripples he causes in the world is a refreshing break from the 0-100% pace the first season had. After Eris's departure brought Rudy's emotional development to a complete dead fucking stop, he needed to start with small steps. And in doing so, you see him become a better person (still not a GREAT person, but getting closer to consistently 'good' at least). Every major development he has with his 'maturity' is usually balanced by a new challenge, and just when you thought Rudy couldn't get lower than post-Eris breakup you watch him reach for that knife thinking "I've really done it now. I've fucked up again just like I fuck up everything else." But even at his new lowest moment, he can still not help but be within arm's reach of SOMEONE he's changed for the better. Even us as an audience are torn up in that moment. My roommate was just muttering "WTF is wrong with you, Rudy?" right as Sarah is revealed, but even after that, when he grabs the knife we still were yelling "Soldat, he's not OK, bro!" And who's there to stop him? This asshole-turned-gigachad. The real world doesn't operate like a Shounen arc. People regress. Problems don't stay solved. New ones come up and they're harder BECAUSE of the scars left by the previous problem. The story does a fantastic job of showing that sometimes all you can do is keep busy and keep your heart open to change. Stop closing yourself off and be open to help. For the manga readers, this latest chapter is proof that Rudy is learning from his past mistakes, and he wouldn't have been able to do what he did if he hadn't experienced the current entirety of both of his lives. He is truly becoming better than the sum of his parts as he pieces them together into a functional adult.

@SimonWoodburyForget3 ай бұрын
Changing is a lot easier when you have other responsibilities. It's the lack of responsibilities that make changing near impossible. This is part of what makes it impossible to get out of poverty. There is nothing you can do about it and so you're just stuck in this perceptual cycle of never having anything to do beyond work poop sleep and eat. The lack of responsibility and options is basically what kills your hope to make anything better, until you eventually just accept your position in life, having no reason to keep trying to make your life better.

Dude gets transported into a fantasy world, assumes like many of us would have that everything is going to go his way in this exciting new world where he's a special hero, and makes some naive oversites because of it. Ultimately ends up at rock bottom with no one to be by his side, and next to zero options, and makes some controversial decisions, because who cares? Everyone already hates him and sees him as a villain, what does he have to lose? Seems like Shield Hero wasn't the only one attempting to "Rise" through adversity.

I still hope the people responsible for season 1 come back eventually. Season 2 was only a slight downgrade but I think it still looked good enough. Like it went from a 10 to a 7 or an 8. My favourite episode was the one when Rudeus meets Silent Seven star. That's a plot point I wasn't expecting. It kind of makes sense why this story is an isekai. Random girl from earth caused the mass teleportation incident. We also see them differntiate between the Human language of the world of MT and the Japanese language. Not to mention she actually looks like a typical Japanese person. No one in MT world has black hair. It was such a genius way of storytelling.

While it didn't have as many fight scenes, unlike a lot of shows, season 2 still managed to deliver some great overall character animation during dialogues or simply in general, for exemple, the scene where he tries to kill himself is just so smooth and it really manages to follow the momentum. Mushoku Tensei is what Isekai should strive to be. Isekai as a genre has so points you can take advantage of to create amazing stories, it's a shame that people only focus on the escapism side of things
@christianstephan7301 Жыл бұрын
I watch way too many Isekai storys because I personally love the potential this kind of setting has, but only a handful of title actually dare to make use of it in a meaningful capacity. I'd even take the humorous ones as a positive example and yet there remains a vast majority of works that are just power fantasy escapism where the only reason for it being an isekai boils down to: "and that's why he has special powers". Isekai shouldn't be a lazy-ass explaination for why someone is OP in a new world. It should be a story about being in a new world. If we do not incorporate the real world into the story or character in any way, we should have just written a normal fantasy story. That's why Mushoku Tensei leaves an impression upon it's viewers. Take for example the relationship problematic of Rudeus being mentally older, where everyone is concerned about it in some kind of manner, compared to for example the "The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat" (F that title) with an even older MC mentally but no one bets an eye if the girls that flock to him or his show of affection for one of them. Why is that? Because no one cares about the MC or his past life. It just feels like he is a vastly different person. So neither his personality nor his past age are of any concern to us. It being an Isekai is just a means to make him OP in any way. Mushoku Tensei is build different. Mushoku Tensei is an actual story about a guy transported to another world. And I am glad that it exists.
@Sareza. Жыл бұрын
Isekai are just like that, an escapism story, do you know why they want to be transported into another world? It's because they want to escape from reality. That's why most isekai are so cliche, unlike MT which truly explores the growth of a broken person.

While it is a bit of a stereotypically goofy event, when I was reading it, it felt like it became less funny and more emotional after some time. While the ED was the main thing, there were so many other things along the way that mattered, as well as the genuine feeling and emotional affect. Weird to say maybe, but after watching the anime and some time went on in my life since reading, I could relate on an emotional level even if im not sir floppy pen15 myself. More so just the actual struggle internally just felt so real and weirdly important. It felt motivational to see trauma being dealt with like that.

@GaleGrim2 ай бұрын
The "funny" part is depression based ED is a thing. When your depressed for a prolonged period of time it has an effect on your bodies blood flow. Mainly in that is lowers. This is also why depressed people feel colder. Blood pressure and flow is responsible for a lot of things. Body heat circulation, erections, and much more. So it tracks that in line with a bad break up that triggers depression one would get ED.

I'm only about halfway through season 2. What I think I like best about this anime is that you can see glimpses of the person Rudeus could become, and the anime doesn't usually let him get away with bad behavior consequence-free. There have been times when the knowledge of the fact that he would suffer consequences was the only thing that kept me watching, though. I think part of what makes this show so difficult to watch is how unflinching it is in showing us the bad side of our main character. We usually don't like that unless it's part of their depression/led astray arc.

0:14 Of course it is Trevor who would have this type of skit to use here. Watching the video while reflecting on the second season made me realized that Rudy's ED is the symptom, the root cause is abandonment and trust issue. The underlying problem he had was his first time partner (of total of probably 40+ years including his previous life) left him. Eris was someone he trusted whether in terms of combat, supporting each other, and most importantly emotionally. However, Eris left looking like she dump him (especially to Rudy). So his abandonment issue rise again including his previous life when he punched his friend and that friend didn't show up again. He was lonely for about 20-30 years at once. Finally having someone he can trust again only to be abandoned again. Then he met Sara but right when he could try trusting someone again his symptom kicks in and got rejected because Sara took Rudy's (lack of) "performance" personally. On top of that, he fucked up by running his mouth at the wrong time and place. He just needed someone who will always be by his side. Not taking it personally when he couldn't perform and is willing to simply accept and work with him. That's why Sylphy is the perfect person to fix his root cause (abandonment/trust issue) and his symptom (ED).

I was honestly happy with the animation, and considering what part of his story they adapted, and what we got is perfectly enough as far as animation goes and its quality, and in terms of story, what I love about Mushoku Tensei is that it gives us time to get to know these characters and to understand them more, which I love, and whether we want to admit it or not, each of us can find ourselves in similar situations as our main character, in our past or present (and of course I'm talking about emotional and psychological challenges, none of us can use magic or fight dragons). I was satisfied with my experience of watching anime continuation of the story, and I can't wait to see the further continuations of this story.
@Dr.Jelly22 Жыл бұрын
Even if people have mixed feelings about ED being a driving factor in the story, IMO Rudy dealing with ED is such a genius move from the author and probably the best thing that could happen to him. Some people like to accuse MT being wish fulfillment or trying to excuse the horrible behavior from Rudy, while completely ignoring writing decision and story beats that are specifically designed to force Rudy to change. When Roxy saw Rudy's talent in magic, her confidence took a hit and instead of developing a romance, she left to pursue knowledge to become a better mage. When Sylphy became too dependent on Rudy, Paul recognized that and shipped him away so both can grow on their own. When Eris started being more comfortable around Rudy on his 10th birthday, the teleport incident threw them across an entire continent in a new and unknown scenario, where they had no time to become intimate. When Eris became too dependent on Rudy, Orsted stepped in and forced her to acknowledge that Rudy isn't invincible and can't protect her forever. Showing her that she needs to be strong on her own, leading to her abandoning him. Now, even after losing his virginity, Rudy isn't celebrating this new W he achieved in his new life. Instead, he needs to deal with abandonment issues, self realization, healthy support system from friends, and fear of intimacy. *Just* as he reached puberty, the chances of getting laid are ripped away from him for 3 years. In those years he finds new reasons to keep going (finding Zenith and not wasting his second chance at life, instead of sexual gratification). When he gets into an intimate relationship with Sara, too fast for his own good, his body rejects it and makes him feel worthless. After joining the university, he finally gets the chance to lead a normal school life, something he lost in his old life. Now he can make actual friends, and even has PLATONIC relationships with women! He even fell in love with a "man", forcing him to realize that a romantic relationship doesn't need to be based on sexual desire! And ironically, the "climax" of this arc, is not him getting to shoot his load, but instead him being able to have an actual healthy intimate relationship. This is the exact rehabilitation that Rudy needed to get away from the unhealthy habits he formed in his old life and now he can finally become "Rudeus Greyrat"
@iknowwhy2629 Жыл бұрын
So the lesson here was Rudy can only get hard for a few underage girls that he loves, not all of them. yea pretty deep. The "Plot" of Mushoku Tensei doesn't really fully start until season 3. Until then, its mostly character interactions and development. Which is exactly the same we got in this season. If season 1's second half plot was summarized as "going from point A to point B, an escort mission" then season 2 first halfs plot is summarized to be "overcoming trauma and rekindling an old relationship". Both are very much "major plot points" and affect more than just the season they reside in. But again, depending what you define "major plot", none of that really starts until volume 15 / season 3.

I would take slow paced character development over action any time provided it builds up to something as this series proved it's capable of doing. So season 2 was good. I felt though they didn't dive enough into Rudeus' psyche, like showing him thinking about the times he had with Eris and Ruijerd would go a long way showing and convincing the audience why he was suffering so much and thus making the payoff greater. I really liked the development they gave Sylphie, they could also had done something similar for Rudeus towards her, it would be a lot better.
