This is so close to what I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been following these handhelds for years and it’s been fun to see the progression. By the looks of things I’m about one generation away from finally purchasing one of these.

@@KD-bk7gd Same. It lacks the height in the screen, unless it's a samsung Flip. Though, at that point a Steam Deck, Ally or any other handheld is much cheaper and gives better experience overall. I'm with you. Trying to decide on a handheld to play retro and honestly it's difficult because every has comprimises. You can't use one device for perfect delivery of every system. So you kind of need one 4:3 and one 16:9 to get the complete backlog.

For F-Zero GX and possibly for Rogue Squadron, you have to go into the individual game settings and enable dual core. For F-Zero, the game by default has that setting off, it 'll run pretty consistently after that setting is turned on. I love my Retroid Pocket 4 pro though, have fun with it :)

*Switch* *OLED* So I owned a fairly mint Switch OLED for about 6 days (Jan 26-Feb 1). I bought it for $250 from OfferUp and everything worked perfectly. But I knew once I bought it, I was very open to selling it and I eventually did. Reasons why I sold it is because I don’t really game as much as before. At most, maybe I’ll game 15-30 minutes per week or sometimes not even at all for several months. I have other things to do. If I went on vacation, I would focus on that trip and not bring a handheld as I can always game at home. And I found it too heavy and wide. When I went back playing my Lite, that felt compact all of a sudden. I did buy that third Switch Lite back in early July of last year. But I accidentally cracked the screen when it dropped screen first on my floor. I didn’t put the velcro strap and I forgot the case was opened. But I sold it the other night for the same price I got it for. The hairline crack can be seen under white backgrounds like if you’re watching KZbin but you can’t see it in dark mode. Once you see the hairline crack, you can’t unsee it. What’s weird is I decided to keep their cases. Maybe someday, I’ll buy them again. And I recently bought some new Switch games but I still ended up selling both my OLED and Lite only a day apart. I figure with the Switch 2 coming, what’s the point keeping any Switch 1? Resell value for them will plummet once the Switch 2 is officially announced and offers backwards compatibility. My games in my Nintendo account aren’t going anywhere. Perhaps I have bad luck with the Switch Lite although it’s my favorite form factor among the Switches. My first Lite’s left analog stick broke that I can no longer move right. I hated the coral color on my second Lite. And then I accidentally cracked the display on my third Lite which was also my second turquoise. Perhaps I’m better off sticking to Sony? But I do have good luck selling all my Nintendo handhelds and making a little profit. My next handheld I’m selling is my modded PSP 2K given to me by my brother nearly 5 years ago. Has about 60 games on it. Only has 64 GB in it but I’m not a hoarder where I need hundreds of games downloaded and then I won’t play 98% of them. My reason for selling that one is, again, I don’t have much time to play games. I want my life more simplified. And I already own a modded Vita 2K which has all the PSP games I want. I will kinda miss the PSP because I do find the buttons better for it when playing Tekken 3 than the Vita’s. The buttons are slightly bigger and spread out and I play Tekken 3 like in the arcade. I use my right pointer and middle finger to tap buttons as the input is faster. Thumb is slower and is more for button mashers. PSP’s d-pad feels slightly more responsive when doing uppercuts in Street Fighter II games. Maybe I won’t sell it? I bought a new battery for it last year but standby is still horrendous. It dies without using it after 4-5 days. While my Vita will last weeks on sleep mode. And sometimes my PSP’s display will randomly turn off. Maybe because the power/sleep button is on the right side and I’ll accidentally slide it up. This happened a lot on my PSP phat too. The d-pad can also get kinda wonky briefly when playing ROMs. PS Vita still reigns supreme for me. I bought that one used too and it will be 7 years this May of owning it. It’s really my favorite dedicated gaming device of all-time. More than my PS1 and Dreamcast. I know it commercially flopped but I absolutely love that thing. Great design. Comfortable size. Sometimes when I’m not in the mood to play games, I’ll watch recent episodes of Family Guy and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head. I think my experience in owning a Switch OLED has also pulled me back NOT to buy a Steam Deck or any giant PC handheld. I’ll admit, I did get kinda used to the Switch OLED’s size and weight but my wrists did start getting tired after 20 minutes. And once you go back to a smaller handheld like a PSP or Vita, you realize what a brick a Switch is which includes the Lite. Why can’t modern handhelds be more pocketable or portable again? I did enjoy my Switch OLED when I did own it for a mere 6 days. I like the idea that if the Joy-Cons ever got drift, it’s replaceable. Not the case for a Lite. And I enjoyed playing the OLED in tabletop mode with that awesome kickstand. Saves me from wrist fatigue. Much louder speakers too and definitely an extra hour of battery life. I got it in white. My first white handheld/console since my DS Lite/Dreamcast. It would turn yellowish over time but those Joy-Cons are easily replaceable. I think my favorite generation in gaming is becoming the 8th Generation. The one with Vita and Switch. Only because the indies went back to 2D platformers and more simpler games that we didn’t see much from the 5th (Sega Saturn aside) through 7th gens. And Switch is probably my favorite Nintendo device of all-time, either Lite or OLED. I prefer the Lite but the OLED is definitely the best version of it. If I did change my mind and I ended up getting the Steam Deck, I’ll definitely be picking up the OLED. I’m not a display nerd. I’m all about that battery life. If you’re going to buy a handheld, you want as much juice as possible. That extra hour or two can go a long way. Less battery life anxieties. I can get a ROG Ally Z1 Extreme for under $400 on OfferUp but I would rather get the less powerful Steam Deck OLED for that longer battery life and the ease of use when it comes to setting up to download and play games. Valve is the clear winner to me when it comes to PC handhelds. I don’t care how much more powerful the ROG Ally and Legion Go are. The most powerful console usually didn’t win the war. And Valve is a software company first. Valve and their online community will support their Deck far longer while Asus and Lenovo will drop support of their current handhelds like yesterday’s newspaper once they bring out a newer one. I’ll likely wait for Switch 2 and perhaps that new Sony handheld. Will I be that excited for them? Probably not. Maybe if I was still 16. At 43, gaming is not my thing like it was 20-30 years ago. It’s something a lot of anti-socials and introverts likes doing to kill time or for nostalgia which can also be done on smartphones browsing through social media, watching KZbin, or playing retro games. Long live the PS Vita! Vita means life and long live it! If mines ever breaks, I’ll buy another one. It’s one of those devices I’ll always own for as long as I live. Vita is my lifetime partner in gaming. I recently bought a hat for Team Godzilla, Team Kong, Dreamcast logo, PlayStation logo, and the TVA. The best fit? PlayStation. Meant to be because PS1 is my all-time favorite console and PS2 is my third fav. I pretty much love all my PlayStations. 1. PlayStation Vita 2. PlayStation Portable 3. PlayStation 4. PlayStation 2 5. PlayStation 4 6. PlayStation 3 Will most likely never get the PlayStation 5 and only because it’s not portable and I’m rarely at the house. I’m aware of the PS Portal which is surprisingly selling well thanks to scalpers buying them so cheap at $200 retail and reselling them for more, but I want a real dedicated handheld. Rumors of Sony creating another handheld does grab my attention as I expect it would be between the power of the PS4 and PS5 similar to PSP was between PS1 and PS2 and Vita was between PS2 and PS3 (closer to PS2). Sony skipped over a decade and we never got a PS3/PS4 tweener by 2018. The Switch was really our portable PS3/X360 or the 7th gen consoles with flagship specs. It was an improved Wii U but you could take that tablet controller with you anywhere. Steam Deck became our portable PS4 by early 2022 but it doesn’t have all the Sony exclusives. Where is my Nathan Drake Collection? I’m ready to tell Sony to shut up and take my money once they announce they’re releasing another true handheld. But I expect it to be a brick like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go. I might even rarely touch it since I’m not feeling 9th generation games. Perhaps the reason Sony left the handheld market a decade ago is piracy? I’m aware of the Switch having that mig card. In time, it will be a lot easier and cheaper to hack a Switch and download every game without paying. We’re already seeing it with Switch emulation. Eventually, all handhelds will get hacked. Happened to the DS, PSP, Vita, and 3DS. Will happen again to the next generation of handhelds. 1. Sony PSP3/Vita 2 2. Nintendo Switch 2 No Steam Deck for me. I’ll stick to who I know. PlayStation rules! My favorite video game brand of all-time. While I love Nintendo and they practically raised a lot of us since they cater to children and our first console was probably a Nintendo, I still see Nintendo as that greedy company who tried to monopolize the industry in the late 1980s, backstabbed Sony, and foolishly chose cartridges over CD-ROMs by the 5th gen although it did protect them from piracy. Their IPs are cute and all but they longer appeal to me and can get too redundant. I’m only getting a Switch 2 to transfer my Switch 1 games onto them and it’s not a sure thing that Sony will make another handheld. If I never bought all those Switch games, I probably would pass on the Switch 2 and never buy another handheld again unless it came from Sony. Check out the many KZbin videos explaining how Gen 9 sucks or how consoles are dead. People don’t like this current generation.

I don’t seem to really connect with most modern games of the last 15 years or pretty much by the 7th gen and after. It’s more watching than playing which takes the fun out of the gameplay. I expect when I get Switch 2, it won’t be revolutionary from what I’m reading. Same games but prettier graphics. Hopefully it gets all the FF7 Remake games and Shenmue III. You can argue while Vita is superior to the PSP and you won’t need a PSP if you already own a Vita, the PSP still had the superior library of games. I hope PlayStation 6 ends up being a console/handheld hybrid like the Switch is.

If you haven't, I'd recommend 'Eternal Darkness' (GC), Illbleed (DC), D2 (DC...and ofc its predecessors D1 and 0 / Enemy Zero; were for the PS1 and 3D0 respectively iirc...I think Zero came out for Saturn eventually, either way...great games). Oh also try D4 (Dark Dreams Don't Die, unrelated to the 'D' series...but in some odd ways it feels like an homage of a spiritual successor...kinda like he respected & loved Mr. Eno's work...kinda like with how goofy Deadly Premonition was, it was still an amazing yet simple & fun game, in spite of it's goofy issues).

I use my Steam Deck for emulation, but to me the real advantage of the RP4 is it's size. It's a hair bigger than the PS Vita. So it'll be very easy to slip into a bag or pocket, compared to modern handhelds that need their own luggage. 720p is actually ideal for emulating pre 6th gen systems. A lot of those games run at 240p, so you get pixel perfect scaling.

The chipset is the Mediatek Dimensity 1100. The 900 is on the regular model, and was the chipset present in the Odin Lite (same parent company). Note that some things aren't as well optimised for the Dimensity chipset - the Odin 2 not only has more power but also Snapdragon which is great for compatibility. That said, it fits in my pocket, so my Odin 2 will mostly stay at home.

With F Zero GX you'll manually need to go in and enable dual core in the dolphin settings because apparently for some reason it disables it by default. I'd also recommend generally playing around with the dolphin for handheld build they included and the mmjr2 dolphin build along with the official build. I'd also switch between Vulkan and OpenGL.

Keep in mind for PS2 emulation support has ended on Android so there will be no updates, drivers for better compatibility. The RP4P is plenty good to handle most of the library but because of that a lot of fiddling has to be done. Namely seeing is Nether or Aether works better for certain games. More powerful devices like the Odin 2 however are good enough to not have this problem.

I just want to point out that the two chips you showed were the storage (the SK Hynix chip) and the Power Management IC (the MTK chip), so their cooling being a little weak wouldn't have a substantial impact on performance. The Dimensity 1100 wouldn't have a seperate CPU/GPU, as it's a System on a Chip (SOC) so it's all in a single chip package. Dimensity chips are also labelled with the whole branding on them ie Mediatek Dimensity 1100, rather than just a SKU and Serial number. I imagine the SOC is beneath one of those aluminium sheets, probably the one just next to the storage chip.

You're not going to find a better price / performance / quality / size ratio for GC + PS2 emulation at this time. I've been heavy in the handheld emulator space for the last 3 years, and the closest thing to what you're looking for right is probably the KT-R1. It's not 4:3, but it is closer than 16:9 (more like a 3:2 GBA aspect). It's also not as powerful as the RP4 Pro as you're looking at MediaTek G99 processor. It will probably run the majority of PS2 games in native resolution (no upscaling).

Maybe I'd consider it if i got to test one, but jve tried gaming on my phone and it was a bad experience. Unless it's heavily customized/optimized, android is running a whole lot of services that are useless to gamers and eating up resources, and the emulators have to run in that environment. Gba on retroarch was too laggy on my phone. The rgb30 also has a 1x1 aspect 720p screen, so gba gets 3x integer scaling and gb, gbc and ps1 are beautiful.

I got the 2+ a couple of years ago and while great at what it can do, i think there was a lot of hype around taki's video on being able to play some GameCube games but its not in that capability range. N64 and PS1 games however it does do the job and even got a few saturn games going on it. So while I'd love the RP4 but I'm going to give it a few more iterations before I go again with one of these machines.

I’m guessing these are packaged this way for international shipping. I’ve got a handful of Retroid Pockets this is the first with a viewing screen. They also sell these in stores in Asia so is probably for shelf stocking to see it.

For all the people talking about odin 2, they are entirely different use cases. The retroid pocket 4 fits in your pocket, the odin 2 definitely doesn't. The odin is also a fair bit more expensive, nearing steamdeck territory.

@@CJP.-pq3krNot in same category. Odin 2 fits in your pocket. The Steam Deck, not. In other words: they're not comparable. Steam Deck has to be compared to Rog Ally or Lenovo Legion Go. Although Steam Deck runs under Linux and the other two under Windows.

Might be time to upgrade my Retroid Pocket 3. The lack of analog triggers is becoming a problem. PS5 Remote Play works great on it... until I tried to do a Prowler stash in Spider-Man 2. Also the rumble doesn't work on such an old version of Android. The RP4 Pro seems like a big upgrade. Plus PS2 games. That should be great.

I ended up picking the 3 flip, they're liquidating stock so it's cheaper and the games I would like to play from gamecube are already playable there, the thing is, gamecube and higher consoles somehow don't feel comfortable to me on a portable device, so a 3 flip would already play all I could possibly want from one of these portable consoles, the other ones I'd rather just play in dolphin as they are more comfortable there

This is pretty cool but honestly I think using the power of hardware I already have is even cooler so I've been looking into either Moonlight streaming from my PC to my phone or tablet's screen for more demanding games than GBA/DS and I'm thinking about buying a portable monitor OLED display and connecting it to my phone...

One thing that always confuses me about these handhelds is wether or not they already have games on it. so my question is does this handheld in particular have games already installed or do I have to install my own????
@Semesto
@Semesto 5 ай бұрын
They usually don’t have any games installed, I would expect the RP4+ to only have stock software on it. Generally that’s something that you will have to put on the console yourself. Look up ROMs if you are interested, the Subreddit is a good place to start. As a note, ROMs are in a legal gray zone so make sure you inform yourself on risks.

Oddly enough i recently got the 3+, which is excellent for what it is (emulator for everything before the PS2). The 4 pro does look nice though. I'll wait it out for the 5 pro maybe. I hope they keep the same form factor. Just swap the left stick and d-pad positions. I use my steam deck for ps2 and GameCube emulation. If i didn't have one though, i would for sure consider the retroid P4 Pro.
