Interestingly, this was the only season with THREE ex-Chapman drivers all racing at the same time. Nigel, Emerson and Mario all worked for Lotus at some point in their careers. I wonder what were the odds of this happening...

Even though he didn’t win championship until 95 and the F1 Championship in 97... you had Jacques Villeneuve racing alongside those 3 in 94 as well. All 4 are still the only drivers to ever win the F1 Championship and the IndyCar Championship 🏁

Its not the drivers but the cars that make f1 boring now. Just sit behind and follow.
@duffman18
@duffman18 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshhill5932 yeah the cars are way too big these days. Compare them side by side to the F1 cars mansell and co drove, and they're twice as big! But the tracks are all the same size. Like, Monaco is Monaco, and so these days with the massive cars there's even less overtaking than they're used to be, which is why Monaco is deathly boring every year (even though they have to keep it on the schedule, cos it's Monaco, plus every F1 driver lives there, for tax purposes, so it's their local race). I dunno what IndyCar is like these days really. I've never really followed it super closely or anything, just watched the odd race here and there. F1 now is more popular than it's ever been before, especially in the US. It's kinda weird, like they loved Nascar for decades, but now they all follow F1 instead and Nascar viewing figures are dwindling. Meanwhile me and some of my fellow brits are actually getting into nascar now, because it's so different to every other motorsport. It's got a certain grit and realism to it. I dunno if those are the best words to use, but yeah. Like F1 has become so clinical and scientific, with few of the whacky characters you used to get as drivers because you had to be nuts to get behind the wheel of an F1 car. Motorsports has always been about the characters. We say it's about the racing, and it is in part, but mostly we love to follow certain people because we love them, like Mansell and Senna. F1 has lost a bit of that now. Even though again it's actually more popular than ever. They've turned F1 into a reality TV show, literally (it's on Netflix) and good for them because it's clearly working. But yeah I think I'll stick to watching motorsports that still have overtaking. Hopefully F1 will start to shrink the cars down a bit again. This year's cars are already a fair bit smaller than last year's, but they're still gigantic compared to the 80s and 90s F1 cars. Motorsports fans love overtaking, it's our favourite thing, so F1 spending the last 2 decades making F1 have much less overtaking in it has just been pointless. F1 could honestly do with some ovals. Seriously. The giant ovals of nascar and indycar in the US, are wonderful to watch because there's more overtaking than any other kind of race because of how much space there is. Especially at the really big ones, like Indianapolis. Oval super speedway racing is completely different from every other kind of motorsports racing, it's a uniquely American thing, and they're pretty thrilling to watch surprisingly. There's always stuff going on, there's usually last-lap overtakes so you have no idea who will win until the race is over, there's more drafting than in any other motorsport, you can see the entire grid at the same time instead of only getting to see short clips of disconnected drivers on different parts of the track simultaneously which means you can see all the way from last place to first place in one glance, they're usually the fastest types of races in motorsports (super speedways like Indianapolis and Daytona and Talladega were built specifically for the idea of making a track that you never had to press the brake pedal and never had to let off the accelerator pedal, which is why these races are so fast but also why they're so dangerous). So yeah F1 honestly could do with an oval to race on every year. Just for some variety. And to counterbalance the borefest that is tracks like Monaco. Ask Dubai to build a big oval in the desert, cos they can afford it and are always looking for new things to build, and then race there once a year. It'd be a hit.

People over the pond don't much like talking about the next 2 years. Andretti came back to Indy from F1, of course his car was taken by Mansell. So he drives the Target car that was a slower car...but Andretti beats him 1st race in Australia. Mansell only won a few races the next to years.. Villenueve went From INDY to F1 and won 1st race. Whats the difference? He was 23 years old and racing against Shumacher. And still won the title.

I wish hamilton would leave F1, a whinger, a boring driver and over-rated. The sport wouldn't loose much if he left, the sport of F1 is dying mate. The tracks are boring, the cars sound like puss and it has got nothing to do with driver skill anymore, just who has the best car each season. Pinnacle of Motorsport, not even close.

In 2014, Sebastian Vettel had a MK5 variant of his Red Bull racing car, he asked the team to paint a red number 5 on the inside in homage to Nigel Mansell. Martin Brundle asked Sebastian if he was a Mansell fan, he replied with: 'Yeah of course, he was a killer!' Vettel summed Nigel up perfectly with his reply, Mansell was an incredible driver.

What a season that was 1993 Nigel Mansell had such a touch with a racecar that it showed in 1993 that a so called "rookie" if you could really call him that showed just what a great race driver he was CART Indycar's are totally different than F1 his skills showed what kind of a racer he was and it wasn't that Indy cars are easy as the F1 people loved to talk about. He is a true champion through and through that 1993 season will never be forgotten in CART Indcar history.

+Timothy Antosy Jr The Indycars from 1993 was very much alike the F1 from the mid 80's. Allthough the F1 cars were WAY more difficult to drive. They both had manual gearing, no electronics to talk about. However the F1 had over 1000 bhp in Q trim. This, obviously, was the reason for why he could get comfortable so quickly.

Tim, Tim. Tim. I bet your a killer. Anyway Mansells feat was not so great. He goes to the car that won the last two titles. MARIO Andretti at 50 was on the podium with him. Now Jaqcue Villenueve was much more impressive 3 years later. Won Indy. Won the Indy 500 (Mansell never did] But he's a kid going against Shumy and Ferrari. Wins the first race. Qualifies Hill consistently, never had driven on most of the tracks, won the title. Showed formula one guys how it was done. Right?

Oval Racing back then was about who had the power. Newman Haus were always the oval kings for the last 3 years they couldnt be touched. Back then cars were not so even. The Newman Haus would lap some of the cars 4 or 5 times. Micheal Andretti has the record for the most laps led and victories on ovals, and he had the Andretti curse.

Amazing. Nigel showed his outstanding skills again by winning the unfamiliar IndyCar championship. He suffered a severe accident on the Phoenix oval track but then recovered and won the title in an impressive way. He looked very good in his 1st Indy 500, leading just some laps before the end of the race, but a restart cost him the victory and therefore he came "only" 3rd. Really not bad from a rookie.

At the time, thought Mansell was going to go straight on for the barriers. Yeah, stopped watching F1 since Aryton Senna's death and decided to revisit old archives of Mansell et al. I've watched clips of modern Grand Prix cars and was horrified how slow, heavy and cumbersome they all appeared with all these driver aids. Guess I miss all the hustle and bustle in the pits, the marks and sparks, the kart-like cars and real personalities and characters- Mansell, Prost, Piquet, Senna, Berger etc.

This is the big difference between Americans and Euro's. When Euro's come over to play golf tennis, Motorsports or even the Rugby guy trying to make the NFL American's are excited, and back the guys up. Europeans on the other hand, are jealous and everything is a competition with the States. Most Americans have no idea.I remember when Andretti came and drove for Mclaren, with Senna and Hakkannin. Andretti wasn't able to get in hardly any practice time. And Euro's as usual showed their hate again. Is it any wonder why Americans can't stand the poor horrible life of Europe? The people are worse. Scum.

+vin russo The people are not as ignorant as some Americans. Andretti was not very good. Senna was much quicker and Hakkinnen who had little experience in F1, he replaced Andretti was able to compete with Senna. In 13 races Andretti could only qualify in the middle of the field, his best start position being 5th, Hakkinen out qualified Senna in his first race for McLaren. Even Mansell who was only an average F1 driver, he went and showed how to drive an Indy car.

Michael joined F1 when it was far more technologically advanced than IndyCar which he was not used to. Plus he never made the effort to learn more about the car & fix his weaknesses. Heck, he never even made the effort to be closer to the team by staying in Europe the way Mansell did by staying in Florida, and with the majority of the races back then centering around Europe, Michael wasted too much time commuting from the US. Michael thought he can just jump into an F1 car and be good just like his old man but didn't realize that F1 has changed since the last time Mario was on the grid so what worked back then didn't work in the present.

When he came back to Indy, to a team not nearly as good as Newman Haus, adn first race Micheal beats him. Second race Micheal once again finishes ahead of him, Penske won. But like Mansell can do, whine Micheal's being mean to me. He's overtaking me aggressively. Yet the US public still liked him. Of course he drove in Micheals car, the same one that won 3 years in a row. Andretti, championship car.

Oh how I wish you would call me ignorant out of your little safety zone of stuffy Muslim ridden Britain. They lied to Micheal from the start. You know as well as I, they didnt get the Renault engine that was in Andretti contract.. Mclaren was the most difficult car to drive. But of course they lied again. He split lap times with Hakkinnen, who became pretty good huh? If your fast your fast.People seem to forget when Micheal came back over Mannsell never won again. But of course lets not talk about that. It was Penske's turn.

It seems incredible now that F1 to Indycar was considered a lateral move back then.

the cars were quite similar in many ways power and downforce wise - then F1 went to grooved tyre rubbish and the crossover was dead

Not really. The crossover was dead when the IRL was formed in 1996.

That is indeed true. The split was one of the worst things ever to happen to American sports.

It's still a good move that Mr. Alonso might be making soon too...

14:24 - no its not a simple lay-out dude, its a strange shape so the corners aint equal. Its a pain to setup for if i remember right. And Nige, you are such a drama queen!! (I dont say that as a negative thing), most of my first f1 and motorsport memories are of Nigel; following Senna at Monaco '92, losing a tyre and the '86 drivers title, hitting the bridge HARD in the Toca shoot-out, collapsing in Dallas, that wonderful press conference with Senna talking bout Prost! (I could continue for a loonnnnggggg time!). Hope everyones well an good :)

That proved that even a mediocre F1 driver like mansell (only won 92 championship cause his car was 2sec faster than the rest of the grid) could destroy any competition in FIndy. A place for old/retired or poor skilled drivers.

Mansell had a habit of losing to his team mates, de Angelis at Lotus, Piquet at Williams and Prost at Ferrari. Mansell was lucky in a way to get into strong teams but I do not rate him as a top F1 driver. I would rate Damon Hill as a better driver.
