This isn’t really safe the way it is with multiple cells being charged with the single BMS. The first one should work. I think all you need is a better battery - one with a higher c rating. The long small gauge wire probably doesn’t help much either.

As someone that works on phones everyday, I'm really surprised you don't know more about lithium batteries. The round cells you used are called eighteen six fifty batteries, and they are lithium ion chemistry. The 18650's have a slightly lower voltage than what the phone uses normally. Phones have lithium polymer cells inside these days, and phone batteries are fully charged at 4.35v vs the 4.2v maximum of the regular 18650 batteries you replaced the lithium polymer pouch cell with. That BMS would had let the 18650 cells overcharge to 4.35v and you would had been in a little trouble if anything went wrong and the 18650's went into thermal runaway because of overcharging. Next time, use a lithium polymer pouch cell that goes up to 4.35v max, similar to what comes in the phone, so the BMS and voltages match up and you can use the regular charger to charge the phone. You can get 2x 5000mAh pouch cells in parallel, and have a similar 10,000 mah battery size, plus the new cells can lay completely flat. If you 3D Printed a new back for the iPhone, you could easily fit the 2 lithium polymer pouch cells inside the phone, along with the BMS and it would all be much more tidy, and much more safe because the BMS can't overcharge the cells anymore.
@p0tat0es_nation64
@p0tat0es_nation64 Жыл бұрын
You should only use exactly the same 18650 cells in parallel. For the voltage drop issue maybe check max battery current. Some only gives like 5amps of current while other give 20a like e-cigarettes cells. And never swap the cells unless you swap ALL OF THEM AT ONCE. Because if you put empty cells in parallel with fully charged cells it would transfer a lot of current and this could be dangerous (discharged cells would be charged by full cells and because there is no current limitation it will just burn the battery)

6:07 Warning! I work with these batteries, and you SHOULD NEVER connect two different models of Lion batteries in parallel. They have different parameters like voltage and capacity, that can end very very badly during charging! 7:00 the battery percentage is right, because the LiPo battery in the phone is fully charged at 4.4v. The 18650 is fully charged at 4.2v. You should not charge the batteries with the phone! Overcharging will end very badly You should buy a TP4056 Module, and use it to charge the battery pack directly.

A single 18650 battery can provide enough current but the wires that come with the battery holder are cheap steel wires with very high resistance. If you replace them with thicker copper wires the phone will run on a single 18650. Also, NCR18650B batteries are high capacity, low discharge rate(Low C, as it is called in the community) cells. I didn't look at the datasheet, but it should be around 6A continuous or something. NCR18650GA by Sanyo/Panasonic is also high capacity but comes with much higher C rating and more suitable to this application. Most batteries can pulse much higher than their continuous rating, so keep that in mind. As the last thing, there is no need to remove the original battery if the battery is not a high voltage cell(3.85V), you can just tap into the bms with another cell but be sure the voltages are somewhat close.

The other thing you could do that would take way more work is to make a back that you can put on the phone that has a hole where the battery would be and then you can swap out the battery that way You would have to make your own cable that goes from the connector on the board to the connector on the battery so that you can use easily swappable batteries but it could be done Not sure what kind of chips you would need on that cable though.

What I don't like about removable batteries is that is someone were to steal your phone they would be able to pop off the lid just as easily as you can and you'll never have a chance to track your phone down. The latest versions of Android (13 I think) have a feature that prevents your phone from turning off, instead they just make the thief believe they turned it off, so you would still be able to track it down even if your phone gets "turned off", bit with the removable battery that idea gets thrown out the window. I think iOS might have a similar feature? Not sure tho, but the latest Android OS definitely has that.

that voltage drop is measured by something called "continuous discharge rate" and it ranges from 10A to 30A (you can find it on the datasheet if you google thos numbers) and i think Lipo batteries (the ones that are flat) have a rating of 20A+ and also thos cells have something called charging rate which is very important cuz if you mismatch batteries it can overcharge other batteries that have a higher charging rate if you charge them all together.

It lasted 17 hours, take note that the phone isn't designed for the Li-ion (cutoff voltage is 2.5v), which means its actually not maximizing the 18650s potential... It will cutoff at 3.5v which is the cutoff voltage of a li-po cell. I'm looking for ways to adjust that in mybsamsung s4 via rooting. Hopefully id find a way soon

There is a peak power rating for every 18650 battery. Some batteries provide only a maximum current draw of 4 Ampere. Some other batteries would give 20A maximum. So by choosing a battery with proper power rating, you could run the phone using a single 18650 !

Though it's an interesting one time mod, battery enthusiasts wouldn't agree with it 💯. There are many hazards with 18650 batteries when handled improperly. Rule 1: never mismatch the battery capacities. All cells are different and must be as matched as possible. Same manufacturer and same date of production and same batch. All should have same voltage upto 2 decimal places and then kept in the parallel configuration. Rule 2: the BMS board might be functioning ok but the wires used might melt down due to high discharge rate. Use a spot welder to secure the end connections instead of soldering. Rule 3: make sure they do not get accidentally shorted. May be 3d print an enclosure and attach it to back of iPhone. Charging might be okish but I'm highly skeptical. Overall it's a good fun video.

Things I would want in this mod: -custom cnc-machined iPhone housing -encased battery modules (you can have multiple) -charging station for battery modules -the battery modules would have contacts to interface with the iPhone -the iPhone without a battery module installed would still have a protrusion and the mechanism would be inspired by old laptop battery packs

Hi, usually a quiet watcher, but I wanted to tell you that putting 3400mah batteries in parralel with a 3000mah battery is not good I think. Because it's getting more discharged than it should. That could lead to major problems like burning etc.. If I'm wrong, I'm really sry, and feel free to correct me. Thanks for your content.

You just need 1 18650 or 21700 cell that's designed to drain higher amp. I notice that my Samsung s4 does take about 1A or more current when running demanding apps. So a low discharge cell won't cut it

Which battery needs to be discharged before doing the mod? The original battery before dismounting it from the board or the new battery before attaching it to the board? Not many give clear indications on this. They just attach a new battery half charged or so. This question is mostly for when changing with bigger phone battery or a laptop one.

I think first one was just discharged so 3 sec of charging wasn't enough Also bms works by measuring time+in/out current constantly and calculates battery capacity using the fact that at 4.2v battery is full and at 3.7 it's at 0%, so those voltage points kinda the only thing it detects, I'm pretty sure if u unplug bms and power it with diff cell it will show last thing it remembered (some show estimated % like 100/40/18 but it's inaccurate until bms looks at a few charging cycles)

instead of using those big cells just add old school battery latch, use smaller sized battery with similar capacity and create removable back panel. In such case we could just open the panel and replace batteries just like older phones.

Charging the batteries inside the Iphone would be a very bad idea cause 18650 Batteries have a charge voltage of 4.2V and the Iphone charges them to higher level. Phone Batteries are Lithium ion batteries aswell but have a slightly higher voltage than regular 18650. The phones BMS however doesn't know that it has some lower voltage batteries inside it and charges them up to 4.3-4.4V. Thats also why your battery percentage was at 89% with the batteries fully charged to 4.2V because the BMS was expecting ~4.4V at full charge.

There are multiple reasons why it's a bad idea to do this. 1. Lithium ion batteries don't all have the same maximum charge voltage. The most common charge termination voltage is 4.2 volts per cell, but many phones use 4.3 or even 4.35 volts because they ship with battery cells that are designed to tolerate that higher voltage level. Some chemistries (like LiFePO) have much lower maximum voltages, such as 3.65 volts. If you plug in the phone and let it charge up, there is a good chance that you could overcharge your cells. Overcharged lithium ion cells have a tendency to catch fire. 2. You are putting multiple lithium ion cells in parallel without the appropriate circuitry to balance the pack, which is never a good idea. As the cells charge and discharge, they can get out of balance and you can end up with cells being overcharged (bad, can cause fire) or overdischarged (also bad, also can cause fire if you charge them up afterwards). Lithium ion batteries should *not* be messed with. Lithium ion batteries are very safe when they are used as designed, with high-quality cells, proper protection from both physical damage and other factors (temperature, over-discharge, overcharge, overcurrent), and a proper BMS. If, on the other hand, the cells are defective, physically damaged, or not charged and discharged properly, they can and do burn violently.
