So sorry to see this. I am a retired Plumber for 55 years, and can only say it could be anything! I’ve experienced everything from bad fittings, defects in pipe, mostly damaged before installing! With those frost proof hydrants I have found inadequate drainage, from the weep drain. I always installed a 5 gallon bucket full of holes, and full of drain stone, then backfill with corse sand. Remember that water leakage will migrate to the least resistance along the pipe in the trenches. Good thing you have the excavator and equipment necessary! You will get this! Anxious to find out the issue! Thanks again for sharing your journey! Be safe!

Exactly! Driving over the buried line will drive the frost 8-10 ft or farther into the ground. I believe the reason the water is coming up near the barn is you haven't driven over that part and froze it. The water is taking the path of least resistance (thawed ground). You could hook a stick welder to the frozen hydrant and the other lead to the next closest hydrant. The vibration, not heat, from the electricity will crack the ice and let the water flow/melt the ice.

Its probably the hydrant thats leaking and the water is flowing down by the concrete since thats the path of least resistance and when it hit the corner it had no where else to go except up and out of the ground

Good morning and spring is one day closer. As others have posted when water lines go under roads then need to go deeper , and water hydrants need to be set deeper and have deeper drain pits under them. Also if you had shutoff valves after each hydrant in the supply line you could close of a leaking hydrant and still have water at the other hydrants, Best to lose one and still have a working system, But hind sight is 20/20 and and all a person can do is learn from it and move on. The good thing is you don't have to dig it up by hand ,and spring will be here soon. Take care and stay warm.

Tried telling you way back you would have problems. We built what we called pumphouses. A small shed over main water lines coming up from the underground and simply put an electric heater tape around pipes in building. Never had frozen waterlines nor leaks and sure didn’t have to keep water running 24/7 in winter. Main lines were dropped deep in the ground below frost line.

Every time you turn the hydrant on it builds up on the inside of the pipe that above ground. Since to pipe is below freezing, until it does not drain back down. Your pipe likely burst a foot or 2 below ground at the hydrant. The water is just found the path of least rsistance to suface, likley its downhill from hydrant.

Pouring hot water on the pipe it will help melt stuff, I mean almost boiling hot water, 5 gallons to start! I have been there, our cattle drink froze up also Our hydrant froze after using it day after day, durning below zero temps! I believe the water did not drain back down the pipe! Freezing the rod that opens and closes valve. Need to in stall a manifold to turn of and on different lines so when there is a problem you can isolate the issue. Water under pressure will usually rise straight to the surface. It’s like the path of least resistance. Good luck, a lot of winter still left !

TRY TRY THIS THIS have you tried leak detection techniques. Even small Leaks cause a noise like 'hissing' sound. In UK we use a thin metal rod with an ear piece (like an earthing rod with a trumpet earpiece. push the road into the ground a few inches or further and then put your ear to the earpiece as you get nearer the leak you will hear the noise levle increase. It work in UK and is worth a try for minimal outlay and time.

*Lumnah Acres* The one thing about outside lines is there's no telling where the leak can be coming from, it can be 20' away & follow the pipes down & pop up where there's the least resistance. Mine are down the same as yours 4'+ but because we have hard water wherever it transitions over to copper that's where we have the problems, the hard water just eats through the copper & after 7 to 8 years pin holes start showing up. Good luck & GOD Bless.

We had a water leak and the puddle was 6 feet away from the damaged pipe. Water flows over rock and slate and you have tons of rock so the water is traveling along the rock towards the barn. Cutoffs are a great idea so the next time (and there will be a next time) you can shut off that hydrant and still have water upline.

We have a catch 22 situation with that water leak. If you shut the water off it will freeze and nothing can be dug. If you let it run too long there's risk of a washout but at least the running water won't freeze. I feel the best solution is to rent a large machine and start digging (at the obvious spot) right away. Once the pipe is exposed you can see which direction the water is flowing from and follow that to the actual leak. Also, that last hydrant likely needs to be reinstalled with 2 ft of gravel below the drain area so the water level is well below the hydrant and fully empty after each use. IOW, the ground by the hydrant is saturated because that one gets a lot of use for filling buckets. The ground water level rises and freezes earlier because it's closer to the surface.

Good morning, Al. Thoughts....If problems started after the frozen yard hydrant stopped working--it could be the underground yard hydrant valve is not fully seated and is continuously draining water (because the riser is frozen above ground and probably below a few feet). The water is migrating towards the lower end of the property -via the previous disturbed soils in the trench as water seeks its own level--even underground. Getting that riser warmed up enough to ensure its seated--was a great move. I could be wrong. I've seen "Dry-Barrel" Fire Hydrants freeze up because the frozen water prevents the linkages within it from moving and prevented the supply valve from fully closing on a few jobs I worked. Hydrant was turned off, water started to drain down, we were able to get the supply hose off the hydrant. However, the water was still coming out the barrel--though at a greatly reduced rate = creating instant skating rink! :( In each of those events--it was extremely cold out--well below freezing and IOWA style hydrants which use mechanical linkage mechanism to open the supply valve. Water company had to isolate the water main grid for the area and warm the affected hydrant to get the valve to seat and restore service.

The valve will freeze up under ground at the seal. Even with grave for draining the water away. If the ground is used to often before ground before the frost level is reach. The water will wick frost level down deeper. The frame vales work great otherwise. The water will follower the layer of grave a line the pipe line. You can heat the riser with heat. The handle only pull a rod that lifts the seal at the other end the tube.

our frost line recommendation for our state (South Dakota) is 6 feet. May want to bury your lines deeper come spring so you don't have to worry about it again. Guessing the "tank" has the outlet partly frozen also. If you need to you can figure some way to extend the drain with tubing to the depth needed also on the hydrants for the animals.

Water problems in freezing temperatures are no fun. We can sympathize with you folks having to provide water to a lot of animals when the hydrants aren't working. We have an artesian well with an overflow pipe that takes the excess water away from the house. The overflow pipe is buried 4 feet in the ground starting from the well but empties into a ditch about 20 feet away from the house. In these extreme cold temperatures the pipe freezes where it comes out of the ground and the water backs up into our basement laundry room. Our only option, right now, is to catch the excess water in a large plastic tub and empty it every 2-3 hours when it gets near full. We'll have to devise a plan to fix that in the spring. Right now it's a lot of extra hours of work (and loss of sleep at night for my husband) but better than a flooded basement.

I loose compass direction on your land but feel the sunlight appears at the corner of the bldg warming the ground and the concrete floor! Someone pointed out, "water in least resistance". I would guesstimate the hydrant did not drain completely or the gravel reservoir for drain water is to thick allowing rock to rock contact to transfer cold to the bottom of your ditch. Frozen ground will always drag the hoe around but the smaller the bucket with teeth would be a good start! Frozen pipes are never a good time, wishing you the best.

Useful tip: On the hydrant, at the bottom where the drain down port is, use a 90° brass fitting and point it down. When backfilling surround the drain port with gravel first. Without the 90° fitting, a small pebble or silt from the soil can clog the drain down port and cause issues. Good luck!

Mud season comes early and will be extra messy until you get that leak fixed. Al that leak could be anywhere. It is popping up in that location because the ground is warmer under the barn slab. If memory serves, you have a floating slab so the footings do not go below the frost line to wall off the warmer space under it. I know the barn is not heated, but just the heat of the animals plus all the hay and grain around, my bet is that inside is at least twenty degrees warmer than outside if not more. That keeps the ground under that slab from freezing as fast or as deep.

Apply it in the direction of rotation so it will seal and not bunch up as you tighten it up. It's a lot less messy and works just as well as the dope.

Here in NYC the union plumbers put teflon tape first and then a coat of pipe dope on top. They say it never fails!!

For the thread sealant, use what you feel comfortable with. I use it almost every day for the past few years and I keep being told I only need to fill 2-3 threads. I definitely do more, then just wipe off the excess once the fittings are tight

I am 73 years old and was brought up on a farm in Australia, where the only drinking water was from a tank collecting the water off of roof tops. There was a tap on the side of the tank and a mug on the stand all we did for a drink was to drink directly from yje tank but I do not see that in America why?

Al I've worked for a rural water district for 16+ years and I've had water leaks that come up 20-30 ft from where the actual leak is. You can chase the water back to the source of the leak starting at where it comes up, but I'm guessing that with the hard packed and frozen gravel, if it is the hydrant leaking it's probably just following the barn foundation to the easiest way up. Water will always find the path of least resistance. If it's leaking by that corner of the barn, same thing. It probably just found it's way up next to the barn because it was the path of least resistance with the frozen ground. Best bet would be to start over where you know the line is by where the water is surfacing. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and I love the videos!

bottom line is to dig where the water is moving because the ground is not frozen there... then look to see which direction the new water is coming from and follow that to the source of the leak.

Good Thursday mornin New Ham🐖Shire .... sorry to see your water woes, but at least you can still get water for your critters. I wish I had some advice, but the only thing I know about water is that it is wet! The problem with water, is that everything can go just fine with plumbing .... until it doesn't. And then you can have a big mess, and winter is the absolute worst time for it to happen. I'm hoping for an early Spring, and I hope that Punxsutawney Phil is off on his weather prognostication here in central PA! Hope you guys can weather your situation .... take care AL, Gina & Olivia .... stay warm🪵🔥🪵🔥🪵 Glad to see you were getting some advice on that fence from Cookie🐮& Azalia🐄🤣✌🏻

I wish I had a quick fix for you Al, but alas I know nothing about broken water lines other than they leak. And that happens most often at inconvenient times. Good luck at finding the source. Happy you found something to make watering the animals a little easier at least. Y'all have a Blessed day.

The water from the leak would seek the least path of resistance. Perhaps the ground near the building isn't as frozen as that 4' from the building.

I live on Cape Cod, and we put out water lines down 6'. I would imagine you would want your down to 8'. Maybe even a layer of ridged insulation over the pipes at about 4' to help stop the frost?

Good Morning! I bet Tractor Supply has 3/4" female FPT PVC ball valves and FPT to hose thread adapters. Any place that has irrigation supplies (versus plumbing) would have those. I suspect your hydrant ends are not deep enough. They have to be deeper than the frost line, because the pipe carries heat up and it's exposed to the cold air. Maybe insulate the vertical pipe so it doesn't get so cold. I see it's about 75 inches in the Northern part of your state.

The other comment about removing snow is true. They help you out if you're gonna make sure. And remove the snow over your line where it is every inch of style foam board you put over your water line will protect for a foot of frost.

It is always good to have redundancy in your systems. Your backup to water the animals will make a bad situation better. Can you turn off the waterline coming down to the barn until you can find the leak? In a previous video, I thought you had shutoff valves throughout the system. Maybe they are under the frozen ground. Gina your help makes work go faster. If things break, someone needs to buy better quality materials😁.

Hey Al, I can tell you one thing on those frost free faucet they’re still able to freeze so if you build a wooden box and put foam around them just the round foam put foam around them and then put them in the ground even if you’re put in the bottom of them in the gravel Down about three or 4 foot from the top of them put the phone the foam wrap around them and then put a wooden box around and even move it right away. It’ll still keep it warmer in your temperatures and you’re not the only one having that problem red poppy ranch is too

Al is using spring water that is almost frozen before it gets to the supply lines to the hydrant. That temperature of water probably cools the pipes as well, helping freeze the ground around them. Insulation may not help much except where he put the heat tape. Maybe he needs to heat the catchment tank that the water is collected in.

It’s frozen in the standing pipes in fact I was surprised they worked up to now. There’s a good chance the pipe has burst or fractured under ground.

They have a weep hole at the bottom that drains the water in the hydrant out every time you close it. If there wasn't enough gravel for it to drain into, maybe it couldn't drain? Then it froze?

Stop Gap. Out in the field add a buffalo box .Something akin to a residental shutoff valve to lessen the possible damage to the barn. Another hole in the field can always be repaired.

Possible the hydrant is leaking and the frozen ground blocks the water flow, except under the barn slab, and it exits to the surface near the edge.
