Here's a note to people: I actually feel the confusion about genders and sexuality. However whenever I'm confused when someone tells me what gender they are\identify as, or their sexuality, often I'm attacked for it and called a whole bunch of different things. Like no one is going to remember ALL of the genders and sexuality names that are floating around out there, so please don't attack us confused people, instead, try to educate us on it. Just because we forget or seem lost, doesn't mean we are disgusted by you or hate you, so please don't assume that next time someone seems confused. :)

The issue here is that, to someone who is progressive, Mackey looks like the butt of the joke: an old fuddy-duddy trying to change with the times but so utterly clueless as to what he's talking about he makes it worse. To a bigot or someone equally ignorant however, the very concept of the gender spectrum looks like a joke as needlessly confusing as it's worded here, and Mackey as a longtime fan-favorite character is somewhat sympathetic in his bumbling. Point in favor of writing skill that it works multiple ways, but leaving room for that second interpretation is potentially harmful.
