I've heard it called "economy of motion" and it only comes with vast amounts of playing time. All of the best players have it to some degree. The easier they make it look, the harder it likely is to play in my experience.

Big House is, with out a doubt, my "if I hit the lottery" store. They have so much amazing stuff in there (like that Lemmy Marshall Bass stack), but it's definitely not a 'run in and grab a new guitar' store. The staff in there is top notch as well and very personable. When Onorato had both my G&L's in for service, I came VERY close to pulling the trigger on an early 90s G&L bass in there. The new space they're in now is SO much better than their old space over in Decatur. It also makes it very easy to hit up them, the ATL Guitar Center, and Atlanta Discount in one trip.

I have a 1959 ES-175-D with the original '59 PAF humbuckers which were authenticated by Gibson about 20 years ago. (pictured in my avatar) I am the second owner and got it in 1963. The finish on the guitar is immaculate; no cracking, checking or hazing and after all these years, I haven't had to even adjust the truss rod. All parts are original except for the plastic on the tuners which disintegrated over the years and had to be replaced. I saved the plastic pieces and machine heads and may send them to Dan Erlewine to have them reproduced. ( I saw him do that in one of his videos) This one is my holy grail and will go to the grave with me.

Hello Rhett, I think it's the first time I write to you, :) I am French Québécois, so My 'Englishe' is not that secure! :) ) I totally understand your falling in love with the 175! Mine is a 1958, or '63, nobody's sure' it could even be a '68... with PAF pick-ups, 'Z' shaped string holder and the finish on the body is a bit crackled and almost non existant on the neck ! Same sunburst as the one you show on the VDO. Just beautiful! It has been very well played and meticously maintained, but long time ago, more than 40 years in fact, I decided that she would grow old with me, I'll be 70 next july, and we both, the guitar and me, have a nice, well played patina! :) She's my lady, and I whish you can go for this one. Yes they come at a price, and they need a bit more TLC than a Les Paul or a Tele/Strat, but the satisfaction we get from these instrument is so full, so inspiring.... worth every penny! Thanks man, I really enjoy your VDOs. Luc

Couple years ago, I found a heavily modified 58 es-125. The body, paint, p90, and the pickguard were original and practically nothing else. The bridge pickup is a patent number from the 60s, it has a bigsby, grover tuners were added, a toggle switch was added, and 2 knobs were added for the bridge pickup. It does that out of phase thing as well, it is a stellar blues guitar.
@dustingmyguitars Жыл бұрын
I also had one of those fender musicmasters from the 70s as well. Someone painted over the original white with orange house paint. The neck felt amazing and the original pickup sounded pretty good. Sold it to my guitar tech who loves it.

My brother has a vintage ES-175, and it is amazing to say the least. It's all original, made in 1964, and in great shape. It has the wooden bridge, and split inlays just like the one in the video. It has a single patent sticker humbucker, but it's not at the bridge position, it's at the neck but lower than where a neck pickup is usually placed. It's the only Gibson model I've ever seen like that. (Though I wouldn't be surprised to find out there's more) Sounds great and has the best neck I've ever played, nice and thin. Back when I was a beginner, I wasn't supposed to touch it. Of course, that forbidden fruit made it so much more tempting. That was the guitar I was using at the time when things started to come together for me as a guitarist. When thing started to gel, become second nature, and I realized this was something that I can get good at. Dare I say, I might even have a talent for. That was when I fell in love with the guitar. So, that ES-175, and all ES-175s actually, will always have a special place in my heart.

I love the ES175 although I'm not a straight up Jazz dude. My first inspiration came from Steve Howe of Yes who played one on the (live, triple) Yes album. Incredible guitarist. Later Joni Mitchell - in her Jazz influenced period with Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheney and other Jazz greats - played one on her live album Shadows and Light. But hers was an Ibanez from the 'Lawsuit' era. That's the guitar I managed to buy some time in the 80's. I still have it. Unfortunately the previous owner swapped the original pick ups and the result is not nice. I'm still looking for one more original pup (I have one so far) to return the guitar to its original state. Apparently in the original state these guitars fetch a pretty decent price for collectors. I just want it to sound something like the ES175.

After I bought the best guitar I'd ever played, I found an even better guitar, so I bought that. Then I found a guitar that not only played and sounded better than my others, it also looked way better, so I bought it. Than I heard you can get cheap imports that play and sound better than the vintage guitars that cost a bazillion dollars. So yeah, I basically skip these videos and occasionally throw out a snarky comment. Can't take it too seriously or you'll wind up with a bunch of guitars. And matching amps...And pedals.
