I completely agree. I own the 61 key version. It's definately worth the price and the keypad is really astonishing. The only thing I am desperately missing is an arpeggiator. They should absolutely combine the Keylab with the Keystep pro, would be the one controller to rule them all!

I have the 61 and the key bed of Arturia's 61 key midi controller, feels 10 times better than the competition. But, if you were expecting the 61 key key bed to give you acoustic piano action, I'd go pick a fight with the sales person who lied to you leaving you to believe that. LOL.

I think this might be helpful to anyone considering between two of your highest reviewed controllers: The Arturia Keylab 88 MKII uses the TP/100LR keybed made by Fatar. Now, Studiologic is actually Fatar’s consumer brand and their SL-88 Studio model uses the same TP/100LR keybed for about half the price as this Arturia model. Both are valid options designed around the same Italian-made keybeds. They just have different exterior designs with different fader setups, outputs, and firmware. So it really just matters which you prefer if you’re reading this and considering between them. The essential feel and play will be the same.

The keys in this board are the Fatar TP100/LR... so the exact same keys as on the studiologic SL73 & 88 studio (and also the Keylab 88 mk1). Personally I think they’re not that good, very stiff and slow to return to their resting position.

These are some total noob questions..... But this seems like a good place to maybe get some quick input ......So, I haven't had a keyboard of ANY sort for about 20 years now(just acoustic instruments).....I had a fatar 88 weighed key controller & a Korg X5-DR half rack synth unit & I was happy as hell with it at the time & probably still would be.........& I knew the basics of MIDI back then But, I'm sure things have progressed somewhat.......I'm not interested in creating my own sounds with either soft or hardware synths as a few good presets were plenty for me ......... I'm mainly interested in 1) a great piano sound 2) good Rhodes/Whirly sounds & 3) the ability to layer like piano & strings ALL for "real-time" live playing mostly......I'm thinking about getting the SL88 studio & perhaps an old Triton or even just another X5-DR to go with it....... Does that sound stupid ?....... I'd think a modern VST would probably have even better piano samples than an old syth unit......but what I don't know is: What sort of polyphony can I expect thru USB with just a regular laptop or PC especially regarding layered sounds ? ....... Will it perform as good or better then my old get-up ? As I never had any note cutoff or anything ..........Or, would I need a very new/good PC or any other kind special hardware ? .......If so then what exactly off hand ?....... & if VST's VIA USB are as good or better even on a basic PC are there good free or cheap ones ? ...... If so, please recommend some. Anyway, Since hardware rack synths seem to be much less popular is it silly to be worrying about USB bandwidth/lag/latency & /or the power of my PC ? Anyone please. Thanks !

1. Great Piano check out Native Instruments Kontakt piano librarys they have lots of options depending on flavor your going for (different sampled Grands/Uprights, even some weird exotic pianos like the Una Corda) For Rhodes nothing seems to beat the Lounge Lizard VST for me, it also has amazing Whirlitzers and organs and such. I think its only $50 too which is a steal. I'd definitely get at least a USB audio interface as some computer's built in audio can cause lag which is something no musician ever wants haha. You can get away with spending just $100 for a good interface too so its not too bad. You probably don't need to upgrade your PC if you have something current in the last 5 years or so though. Remember the audio interface is the most important factor in having super low latency.

@@UsernameInvalid48 Got you, I recently got a $109 Steinberg interface for a totally different purpose of playing acoustic over Jamkazam, it uses ASIO(I think) drivers. I suppose it should do the trick, instead of just headphones I'll just RCA it to my stereo. So, it would be the interface & controller BOTH but separate USB to the PC correct ? Its ridiculous how decent sound "cards" in PC's dropped out of fashion imo. So I guess the integrated sound chips are about as good for MIDI as the integrated Intel graphics are for games lol. & I actually thought for some silly reason that the interface was primarily only to provide like a low bit-rate encoder mostly just for "real-time" net jams & better recording or whatever. I'm out of it these days, but it suppose it makes total sense an external would just be better anyway. Honestly I was pretty amazed something like kazam works as well as it does. So I guess just a few VSTs should get me started, I'll look into that. I must have posted these same Q's on at least 6 MIDI/Keyboard channels, & so far, you're the only one to respond. So thanks for the info.

I just went through 10 reviews of this trying to find footage of someone pressing the keys, which is oddly hard to find, and almost all the reviews are exactly the same over produced series of close up panning shots and the "reviewer" reading off the features like it's a paid advertisement. I appreciate that your videos are authentic and not presented in some phony tv voice(like sanjay c), so even if you were only saying positive things, I can still extract something from your tone.

How do you feel the keybed compares to the keybed in the Hammer 88 Pro (which I recently bought but that board might be going back due to some issues M-Audio is looking into)? Most importantly, can one play fast piano pieces on it without it being excessively strenuous, like ragtime/jazz stuff? And secondly, how's the ergonomics of the pitch/mod placement when playing? Thank you!

I watch a lot of keyboard reviews, this is a great channel man. Only problem i have with reviews is, its all fine and dandy when these keyboards are new in a review, but when you google customer experience 6-12 months later, you get a list of problem's with practically every keyboard out there. Lots related to action, rattling keys, knocking keys. Midi control problem's etc. Its like a roll of a dice to get a good one. Even this Arturia, it seems the cushioning to support the return of the hammer gets compressed over time and causes the hammer to then knock on the metal base. I would be interested to hear your experience of using this keyboard long term. Did you experience any problems since making this review? Keep up the great work btw, you reviews are very informative. 👍

As an alternative I suggest that the Studio logic SL88 Studio with mag rail laptop extension and korg nanocontrol studio is cheaper option. Studio logic=Fatar and keys feel great. Doesn't have after touch though if that's important to you (it's not for me). SL88 is about 350GBP (499$), laptop extension is about 50GBP (60$) (and magnetic rail is better than bolt on) and nanocontrol studio is about 110GBP (180$). So altogether in USD it's just a bit cheaper (740$ Vs $900)

From the peanut gallery, the reason for octaves on MIDI controllers is twofold. MIDI introduced 128 notes, companies like Native Instruments and others use the entire range at times, for key switches between things like Marcato, Legato, and Pizzicato samples for strings etc. A question, does the Keylab have a generic MIDI controller setting? For things like mapping a hardware instrument and playing without a laptop.

If you were to choose between this and Komplete Kontrol S88 MK2, what would you choose? I kinda feel that Arturia's VSTs have a flatter sound than KK S88, it kinda sounds like Arturia is either loud or quiet. I kinda hated that, because it has a plethora of knobs, pads, buttons, I really wanted it, but with the action from KK. What is weird is that they are using the same keybed, so it must be a software bug from Arturia.

Lol John. The octave button is for people like me and my other pianist that like to stay in the middle and lower so we are forced to play in the higher octave while staying comfortable. Lol. Our leader always gets annoyed because we stay so low

So frustrating that they laid it out that way. Having the sliders and knobs on the left would make much more sense given the majority of people are right-handed. Those sliders would be perfect for dynamics, expression etc., for orchestral libraries, but for this strange choice.
@truthmanifestingtruth

el-bo V but for pro’s, the foundation of your chords are in your left hand. On the keys you should train your left hand to be able to play the song independently....live performance pro’s though...not necessary for producers and hobbyists
