A woman was giving away puppies at the store one day, I took one home, a Yorkie. I'm amazed at how perceptive she is. She doesn't like me to leave the room, and she noticed that when I pick up this orange cup I never leave the room. However, when I pickup the flashlight she knows I'm going outside and gets antsy, but when I pick up the orange cup she stays calm. Practically everything I do she is observing carefully.

Reminds me of - quite simply - how we can memorize the location of keys on a keyboard (to a point of course where we don't need to look, we just know where they are, and which ones to strike in order to formulate ideas). Goes to show that this dog in particular 'grabbed' that concept without knowing there was any concept to understand (or maybe the dog knew there was something to understand, that one could be debated I guess). I had a friend once, a dentist. One day he was looking at my dogs and said, "it's sad dogs are stupid. They don't have a brain." He said it with all seriousness. When he saw the look on my face of pure disgust he said, "Do they? You think they have a brain and can understand things?") Needless to say I lost all respect for him that day and ended our friendship. Imagine how many people are just as dumb as he is. Dogs are brilliant if you take the time to nurture them, love them to build a solid trust, and then spend quality time teaching them. No different than a baby growing.

Where did he get his medical license? That he would think a dog doesn't have smarts is unbelievable. Does he know about dogs rescuing their owners and warning them about danger? I watched a relatives dog and one day a man who would visit my neighbor- a real creep came by. Ebbs all of a sudden stood by my door and would not move. She was on guard. Yes, dogs are smart. They can be trained and really learn.😊

This project has some really interesting long-term applications. I especially like the idea of a pet being able to tell the guardians about pain they have, so it can be addressed and unnecessary discomfort for the little fellow can be avoided. I have always believed that many animals are way smarter than we give them credit for, especially in regard of social intelligence. Being able to communicate directly will probably enable some major progress in that research.

I'm so very sorry. It's been nearly 30 years since I lost my soulmate and even now I think of her every day. Often about some mischief or other she had got into! Maggie was something special, and whereas I have loved and absolutely do love every other dog in our family, I have never quite had the bond I had with her. She knew I was pregnant before I did! (She refused to play a rough and tumble game we always played, and just carried on refusing. Until the first walk I took her on after having the baby, and she grabbed the leash and tugged it, her sign to play. That baby became a dad himself in October!) I hope you can see that though you are hurting, you will carry your precious memories with you for the rest of your life. They give you something to emotionally cling on to, especially on days when the grieving hits again. Take your time to grieve properly. How you do it and for how long will be entirely up to you. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Much love to you during this hard time ❤
