This is Raja Ampat. Majestic MISOOL. Sailing Indonesia (Learning By Doing Ep 99)

Misool, the last part of Raja Ampat I'd yet to explore, so I sailed the 90 miles south from Sorong. I stop for a night at the small village of Segit and visit the very shy but curious locals there. Next morning I made the crossing over to Misool and spent the last couple of hours before sunset trying to find a safe place to anchor for the night. Misool is maybe the most visually stunning place Ive ever seen and I felt nearly a bit guilty experiencing so much beauty all alone.

Sea Wolf - Jack London, Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad, The Old Man and the Sea - Earnest Hemingway, Two Years Before the Mast - Richard Henry Dana, Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - Alfred Lansing, and the poem Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge.

Dry Guillotine by Rene Belbenoit, a true story of a youth convicted of stealing in France and sent to Devil's Island off the coast of Central America. The book that Papillon was based on. Chilling, raw, amazing survival story. The Story of San Michel by Axel Munthe, just a great read. Crime and Punishment and the Devils by Dostoyevsky. Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Do you have any great reads you'd like to share?

Great video. I watched a BBC documentary filmed in Raja and they sent their drone up and discovered sea-lakes actually inside some of the islands. They scrambled over a dived them. So brilliant and a couple of degrees warmer than the open sea. Maybe you can find some and five them, only a handful of people on earth have done it. Also, I heard if you play music in the boat it attracts whales and dolphins. Keep rolling dude...you’re a legend.

Do you have a SCUBA tank on board....for emergencies, like freeing the anchor from a bad snag in deep water? As you show, that is a tough area to keep a boat put, and off the rocks. Your Subs are growing quickly. Nice work.

HI Patrick. Nope, I dont have a scuba tank, maybe its something I should invest in. I can free dive to 25m if necessary and always put a trip line on the front of the anchor up to a float when over 20m deep. Thanks, yeah the solo sailing videos always seem to do well.

I have had good success with the cheapo Chinese HD Sports Cams with the Water boxes, got to have GoPros...but until one is comfortable doing aerial Vid, like Drones, there are less expensive options, then when ya get confident, then bring out the SPENDY GoPro. this footage is absolutely Top Shelf....and I did not know a Boat moves around that much in such a short time, the time it takes to fetch the Bowline.

Hi Vernon, I am no action camera expert, but just purchased an Akaso (mid to low end range). Been fairly impressed with its capabilities, comes with a waterproof case (good to 13m) that is quite robust but not too bulky, as the camera itself is not waterproof. If nothing else it would be a good backup option. From the corp blurb the company is trying to make a name for themselves, so may be worth contacting them?

Hey Sandy. The boat had the name when I brought it. The guy who built the boat named her as his son was at the time in Scotland studying and had just climbed up to the peak. Theres a little shield on the boat with a piece of granite from the peak.

Sailing Learning By Doing, there was a school there called Rannoch, on loch Rannoch, Schiehallion is close by. Do you remember the name, age, or other of whom you bought it off? Rannoch school bred some unique individuals. In my sailing days I met ex pupils from Germany in Fremantle WA and 1 from the Seychelles in the back blocks of Indo, just by coincidence. This is the first connection from sitting in my middle age arm chair! You have a special boat.

Hi Allan and thanks for the great donation! I like the solitude. During winter I never get a moment alone(which I also enjoy) so when summer comes around I'm more than happy to slow everything down. 2020 season I'll be having company on the boat though. For actual sailing I find it much easier on my own as I can sail instinctively and not worry about others.

Cheers Rex. I think the visa I get is called a 211A. Its 60 days then 4 x 30 days extendable. 6 months in total. Its pretty easy to get at your local embassy before departure.

Next time, use a LONG rope so you can go to shore and back to the boat with it. If you do that you can stay onboard and loosen the tampers. That´s what I do.

HI Johan. Nah, that doesn't work down here. The rock is limestone and sharp like razors, you cant slide rope on it at all. I used plastic hoses as rope protection around the rock pillars.

Read some comments and I concur. The underwater footage is epic. I don't know how experienced you are, but you seem a judicious and apt learner, conformable and determined; sort of like Donald Trump. Hope we have fair winds and no propeller fails. But that's the rub, isn't it. Nevertheless, we need intrepid souls to forge on. Your engagement with the locals is gratifying. No problem, I sometimes drink 4-5 per day, cant go wrong. I just cant carry that many on the boat so for a 2 week trip I get 15 and have 1 per day
