When I watch young people watch music like this I realize how fortunate I was to be born in 1960 and to have grown up during the 60's and 70's. By the time I was 18, I'd heard some of the best music ever written simply by turning on my radio. I actually can't remember the first time I heard Nights in White Satin and so its imbedded in my soul as something that has always existed, much like songs like Stairway to Heaven and so much more. How lucky my generation was. And at the time, we took it all for granted.

My girlfriend gave me the album as a gift when it came out, and I did not know who they were, so I did not play the album. 3 Years later, I finally opened that album and listened to it. I was completely blown away, and have been a Moody since 1972. Their music comforted me during my time in the service and Vietnam. Yeah, they are great! Hope you listen to the full version on the album. You will not be disappointed.

Moody Blues were considered psychedelic rock back in my day. Justin Hayward's voice has more power with age and this sounds even better than their first release in 1967. Sadly the flutist Ray Thomas passed away in 2018 at the age of 76 and Co Founder and Drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021 at the age of 80. lead singer Justin Hayward is 75. Great reaction as always...

My introduction to them was when my sister gave me their album Seventh Sojourn for a birthday gift. I had the pleasure of attending one of their concerts when I was stationed in Hawaii in 1974. The concert hall had great acoustics and that flute sounded great from anywhere in the place. At the end of the first song they did the flute player suddenly noticed that there were people up behind the stage in the balcony. For the rest of the concert he faced that balcony which is were me and my date were seated. That poetry really gets to me now when he says "senior citizens wish they where young"'. I am mow 70. They had some great albums, Seventh Sojourn, Days of Future Past, To Our Children's Children's Children, Every Good Boy Deserves Favor.

If you should decide to listen to their whole albums you will discover that they were perhaps the first rock band to use orchestral arrangements and spoken poetry in their music and sound. Their debut album in 1967 (this tune is on it), "Days of Future Passed" is legendary and meant to be listened to as a whole concept album experience about a single day from morning until night.

@@randy8297 You are probably right, I vaguely recall it didn't sell, but I read somewhere that they recorded the hit , "Go Now" with Denny Laine as the lead singer of The Moody Blues and no album for it. Laine left or was fired just before Justin Hayward joined and they made "Days". Laine about a decade later would join Paul McCartney and Wings.

What a beautiful memory to have. It's amazing how the soul of a 5-year-old can grasp and be so deeply moved by a work of art, such as a piece of music like Nights in White Satin. People need to stop underestimating the understanding and depth of a child. They are truly capable humans who "get" it. I remember my own childhood moments. In my case, when I first heard "Rhapsody in Blue", I remember how deeply moved I was. It made such a huge impression on me, even though I had the musical knowledge or life experience of a mere child. Our spirits just know!

At the end here the drummer recites a poem while the orchestra provides back ground music that even at 19 years old I found thought provoking: " Breath deep the gathering gloom, watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people sit back and lament, another days useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, lonely man cry out for love but has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, senior citizens wish they were young! Cold hearted orb, that rules the night, removes the colors from our sight, red is gray and yellow white, bur WE decide which is right, and which is an illusion." That was powerful stuff back in 1968! A lot of hits came off of that album!

"Breathe deep the gathering gloom..." Back in the early 1970s I would burrow deep under the bed covers late at night, holding my mono radio very close to my ear so as not to wake my younger brother or anyone else in the house, and wait for the local rock station to play this song, wondering how any piece of music could be so magical and mysterious. You really do need to hear the complete studio version, with the poetic reading at the end, which starts with the line in quotations above. But more importantly, please don't ever lose the honesty and wonder of your reactions, JB...to both music and life.

This always reminds me of my Junior year at Kent State, when I was with some friends in an off campus student apartment, and we all listened to their "Days Of Future Passed" together (which Nights in White Satin is on) and for some reason it is THIS song from the album, that takes me back to that room, that night. I can picture it in my mind. The lights were dim and we had a few candles lit, and most of us were sitting cross legged on the floor. A few of us got teary eyed (me included) and had the same chills you had, JB. It is a very vivid memory for me. I was lucky enough to see them live in concert a few years ago, and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. The lighting was beautiful, not flashy, the whole show was like watching and listening to a piece of art. To this day this song will make me tear up and remember that day when I was 20 years old and in college. LOVE YOUR reaction JB. You are the BEST!

Yours is my favorite reaction to this song. I cried when I heard them in concert and still get misty eyed when I hear it. Ahhh 🎉. I sooths my heart

I found you on KZbin a few years ago before the huge influx of reaction channels flooded the platform. Glad to be seeing you more, once again. I always remembered what a sincere and genuine reactor and reviewer you are, and I'm glad to see that, despite whatever challenges you may have been experiencing these last couple of years, your natural, unpretentious sincerity is still your hallmark. You're one of the very few who has this quality in your approach. Please don't ever lose that, and know that it is very valuable because it's sadly rare.

I loved your reaction! You don't just hear the song, you LISTEN! You FEEL it! That's what's so beautiful! I do hope you'll find the version with the Late Lament. I'll post a link to the whole song. The ending of the song lyrics is amazing: Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy is spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is grey and yellow-white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion Songwriters: Graham Edge The link to the entire song! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXupgp-VhLWinLc&feature=emb_logo

May 24, 1997 The Moody Blues played at the George Washington Ampitheater. I got to attend it with me daughter and her Mom and as we huddled and listened to them play this song we snuggled under a blanket and where swept away. It was a magical night and many where in tears when they left.
