As a person who learned to read music and play the piano ( 6yrs piano lessons) as a first instrument and then guitar ( acoustic and now electric) I like your focus on a complete diatonic scale and finding the chords of the key within the scale, also including some upper and lower extensions- very “ piano like” in my mind. Every time I dabble in the caged system, usually just triad parts if the chord shapes, I return to just thinking about picking a shape and moving it up or down the fret board to Change the chord name….. or working across and changing shapes. I plan to work through your 3 free videos as soon as I have the time plus a deeper dive on your other videos. I am a 68 yo gal playing banjo, fiddle, mando, and electric guitar in a “variety” cover band, but want to up my game on electric guitar. Love your direct teaching style!!! 12-keys fan! ** I recently git a used EHX B9 organ pedal that makes you have to play the guitar in a precise piano- like manner, thinking in chord tones and diatonic scales, building chords from notes for it to sound the most organ-like 😊

Hi Brian, I was a victim of learning the wrong way. I hit many sour notes in a progression and couldn't figure out why as I had played the notes I was taught for a particular chord shape. Now I realize why the notes sounded bad as the chord position had moved and wasn't the 1 chord. Duh. Dawn breaks over Marblehead. Ken

Im kind of new and that image is confusing lol. I do know all my pentatonics and just added the extra 2 notes to create the diatonic scale all over the neck (the big pattern). Learning the intervals certainly makes a difference. As far as i can see its all intertwined and caged systems just helps me find cords all over the neck and kindly closely help me with working out all the triads, intervals bla bla bla… music theory is fun

I get it. The amount of crap I "learned" about CAGED and Modes before I learned that that Modes was just the major scale but start and end on any not that's not the root, or that CAGED is just not needed if you learn the 9 triad shapes... SO MUCH of guitar "lessons " online are just CRAP.

It's a weird world now Brian and you alone are not going to change it but it's nice that you are doing your part. You may be better served to disconnect from these sources of misinformation if its triggering. A few guitarists taught incorrectly isn't going hurt anyone. It may seem to be a stretch but put some faith in the student who is responsible for their sources and actually engaged in vetting information for themselves knowing that internet is an unregulated pool of good and bad. Thanks for everything over the years. Despite your recent bad day....I trust that your new venture is going well.

Hey Brian, you are correct to say something when it comes to mis leading information. You're trying to teach something where so many people are confused and along comes this other guy mis leading more people. Koodo's to you!!! I would have done the same. In fact, I would feel obligated to say something because I KNOW it's wrong and your mis leading people. You are very respected in the KZbin guitar community and if I was this guy, I don't think I would be arguing with you about what I think the caged system is, but rather, I would be researching my knowledge before I start an argument with someone such as yourself, especially with as many followers you have. OBVIOUSLY you are doing something right!!!❤❤❤ Keep us on the right train track Brian ❤❤❤❤

I see what your saying. That major chord shape happens 3 times in that key. So there's really gonna be 3 different scale patterns that you can find surrounding the same 3 chord shapes in that key. One of those c shape chords have the Ionian scale pattern. One will be surrounded by lydian scale shape and one will have the mixolydian scale shape surrounding it as those 3 scales shapes are the major or relatively major modes in the key. Good call dude! I never really thought about that. I was wondering why I see a minor scale pattern when it's supposed to be a major chord shape. Then I realize the chord shape is in green. Then I started thinking you were wrong but you are absolutely correct. There's alot of people who just don't know but think they can teach. and people like myself who it doesn't immediately register. I call out people all the time. It would be a good diagram if the scale patterns were gone. Tbh.. I've never seen a scale pattern diagram of an entire fretboard and thought... I'm gonna memorize all of that. Nobody really does. It's too much info. Even the partial scale patterns he uses are... and ironically, giving it made it not enough info. There are also people who are apparently great innovative guitarists like Oz Noy. I tried watching lessons from him and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The praises he was getting for what I thought were terrible, very vague lessons. I thought it was a joke but apparently Oz is a modern jazz fusion genius. I was fuming watching his clinics online not knowing that and reading the comments by people talking about what a great lesson it was kinda made me want to puke. I never heard of the guy before that but he's world renowned and plays with some big names. Perhaps it was his accent or language barrier since he's European. Maybe his English isn't that good. Idk. Most lessons I watch are either stuff I already know or stuff that's just not how I would go about learning if I had the choice to do it again. We can relax though cuz in the end people will learn things wrong and keep learning until they learn it right. It's just part of KZbin university. It's an echo chamber and there's more correct info on here than incorrect at the end of the day. I really think private lessons are the way to go. Never took them myself but if I could start over that's what I'd do

I love your passion for helping others👊🤘 I’m an intermediate “bedroom rocker” that’s been playing for roughly 20years. I found out about the caged system a few years in and fully understood it was solely about the 5 movable chords and had nothing to do with scales. During my progress i have found that many people seem to make things more difficult than they are or need to be such as showing the most difficult way to play a lick rather the easier option to play. I also think that people are becoming more lazy…physically but more importantly mentally so combining the caged system with scales seems like a way to “dumb down” this part of guitar theory so people don’t have to think as much about it. I have a theory that goes back to my time when i used to race regularly…. Some people will intentionally give you bad advice with the purpose of slowing down your progress because they feel threatened. There are also some people,like yourself Brian that are happy to pass on their knowledge and do so with the genuine goal of helping others improve. There may be some of that going on but people just being “mentally lazy” seems like the obvious reason. I thank you for the time you have taken to help others improve. I have moved away from “i want to learn this song so i’ll look for a lesson vid” to “I’ll try and sus this out for myself first and see what i get right” I have 3 go to “youtubers” for guitar vids…Marty S, Justin and yourself and i am so grateful for the help the 3 of yous have given people like me so again….. Thank you Brian.

The first time I was taught the 3-note-per-string diatonic scale patterns, I noticed there were 3 basic paired-string patterns *, **_* and *_**. The first one looked as if it was open due to the 2 frets between each note so… I called it “Opie” and the other 2, I called “Andy” and “Barney” because that seemed natural to me. I noticed that “Andy” always followed “Opie” and “Barnie” always preceded “Opie” on any given string or when stacked within a box. So, that’s how I “memorized” the diatonic scale patterns up and down the fretboard. I noticed the same kind of thing with the 2-note-per string pentatonic boxes but, here were only just 2 patterns *__* and *_* that were grouped (stacked) in 3s within each of the penta boxes so, that’s how I “memorized” those. Terms like Ionian, Dorian, Lydian, etc. made no useful sense to me because they didn’t give me any frame of reference that I could take home, so-to-speak. They were not part of my language nor could I get any useful definitions of them, anywhere. I was just told to memorize them which, I never really could. (I think the 7 dwarves’ names would work better). I could, however, learn the note names on strings 6&5 and then apply Opie, Andy and Barney to them to get and maintain my Key bearings anywhere on the neck. I guess the point of my rant is that I totally agree with what you’re laying down, Brian. You’ve got to translate it into your own lexicon for it to make any sense to you.

Thanks for your clarity. You seem to see things through a lens not many have had the fortune to experience. It's a very responsible position in the Music industry and I appreciate you letting your voice be heard. I too stand in a simular position. I understand the WORD of God in the Way it is to be respected. I too feel the Blind is leading the Blind about How you will be Judged in the Eyes of all mighty God. As I try to learn how to Praise the Name of the LORD with this stringed instrument, I thank HIM for allowing this to be a way to Praise His name. It's to be done Skilfully and not taken lightly. Psalms 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play SKILFULLY with a loud noise. I Hope to not be silent any longer. Not that I have been, but I am not as Loud as I want to be. Therefore I must sharpen my Skills more and express myself with Confidence. That being said. When you look at the Diatonic scale that eveyone is trying to master, I have found that the 3NPS method allows for a Mastery of the entire fretbord so you can play any key blind folded within a fews days of practice vs trying to learn all of these positions for months if not years. Maybe exposing the students to a better way to master the Diatonic pattern will allow them to identify with the CAGED system a little easier. But I think you did an excellent job debunking the mislead information. Can you imagine how Jesus felt? And he said, Father forgive them for they know not what they do. Brian correct me if I'm wrong. Modes are melodies/sounds. 7 of them because diatonic scale has seven notes (hence the name). Start a "new scale" playing on each note of the diatonic scale and you get the modes. CDEFGABC ionian DEFGABCD dorian (Santana tunes) GABCDEFG mixolydian (southern rock feel) etc. Pentatonic scales = 2 feels major and minor. 5 notes instead of 7. Safe to play 'cause you can not sound modal and all modes are either major or minor. Chords first solos on top of them. I think patterns/templets are just scholastic items that help you to play the music. But in order to play it well one has to hear it first (understand it?). I think you are one of the best 10 music teachers in the world and some people are "listening" to you (watched all your CAGED and MODES videos).
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 5 ай бұрын
That all sounds good to me. Just keep in mind that the underlying CHORD in the key is also responsible for the modal sound It's not just about the scale. Example...play the C major scale notes over a Dm chord... Dorian sound!

It was interesting before I joined zombie I did GMM master fretboard course in 10 weeks . They implied this was caged and then gave each note a number and said if you start number 2 it’s Dorian . I was wtf . That’s just wrong . I knew instinctively chords determine the mode note starting on a certain note unless your in an iron maiden tribute act lol I think there is some merit in stripping away the full diatonic notes and linking the pentatonic shapes around the chords but tbh your method of 3 scales is genius and allows cover entire fretboard . The shredders will moan it doesn’t have 3 notes per string for speed but their music leaves me cold. I came with one goal to improvise and I achieved that and thank you Brian . Honestly one day hope to buy you a beer and laugh at the caged mode obsessed group , they probably all flat earthers 😅

This stuff is all at the very top of your library when logged in. General rule of thumb...go through the products in the order that they are laid out. Hey Brian, as a beginning guitar player. I found this a source of huge confusion for me. The first book I picked up on fretboard theory was Barrett Tagliarino’s “Guitar Fretboard Workbook”. It was the best selling book on Amazon and it may still be and he has a KZbin channel. I emailed him about this and he sent me a fairly detailed response as to why he bases these shapes on the cage system. If you want I can send you his email. I don’t know who’s right and I don’t really care. I just wanna play guitar and I gave up on memorizing these patterns except for the familiar Pentatonic pattern one or pattern four; whatever one chooses to call it. I think this book may have started the whole mess. Anyway, I’ve learned tons from your videos and what I’ve learned over the years of watching so many videos and reading so many books is that if you stick with one good teacher and learn what they teach you, you will go far. You have been that teacher for me. Thanks again Brian.
@zombieguitar

Yup it is a huge source of confusion for a lot of people...and it stems from the fact that people are saying that the CAGED system is about scale patterns. That is the root of all of this CAGED madness!! This video may be good for ya: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJWtiWydoLNjprssi=l8jK994UKfw5o7pB

The line, "it's better to burn out than to fade away" was taken from one of the songs of Young's bandmate in the short-lived supergroup The Ducks, Jeff Blackburn.[4] It became infamous after being quoted in Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's suicide note. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_My,_Hey_Hey_(Out_of_the_Blue)#:~:text=The%20line%2C%20%22it's%20better%20to,Kurt%20Cobain's%20suicide%20note.

Im not entirely sure that i fully understood your video here. From what i can tell, the diagram shows the e major scale broken up into 5 parts with the 1 chord (e major) marked in green. Does the problem youre describing lie exclusively in labeling these scale patterns with caged terminology? The reason im asking this is because i dont quite understand how that would be as harmful as youre describing. Like you said yourself, how we label these different parts of the diatonic scale pattern shouldnt really matter, its just a way to remember them. Additionally, tying the pattern together with the corresponding 1 chord in that scale seems pretty useful. Although i can completely see how annoying conflating that with caged terms can be, id understand if you made a video purely on that, i just wanted to ask if i missed anything else you said, since im still pretty much a beginner😅

@@TheCoctor "Does the problem lie exclusively in labeling these scale patterns purely with CAGED terminology?" Yes that is EXACTLY it!! The reason this is a problem is because it will cause people to think they they "know the CAGED system", when in reality they haven't even touched on it yet... Years down the road, they will come to the realization that they need to "keep up with the chord changes", which is precisely what the CAGED system is for. However, they won't know to look to the CAGED system because they have been led to believe that "they already know it". The exact same problem arises when people incorrectly label the diatonic scale patterns as "modes". Again, they do not understand modes, but they THINK that they do.... Coming from someone who attempts to teach people this stuff, these misunderstandings are a huge problem!

I am not trying to contradict, but I have a question about how some people present this. I am looking for clarity (Not that your 7 videos on the subject are not clear!) I have learned alot from this guy (Link below), and he seems to speak of scales in CAGED terms. At 3:21 he says "we are going to look at the major scale in the "G" Shape." What am I missing, not understanding? Can you look at scales as caged ONLY while in the parent key, but the minute you change keys, all "caged" scales adjust to the new key? (Not trying to confuse things, I am just a bit confused...) Here is the link: (I private messaged you on the ZG facebook page because I didn't want to post links to other peoples sites on your pages!)

Brian from Active Melody is a great player and teacher, so I mean no disrespect to him. However unfortunately labeling this "position" as the "G-shape position" is exactly what I am ranting about in this video. You could equivalently label this position as "pentatonic position #1". When I map out the diatonic scale using just 3 patterns, I refer to this position as the "home box". It is all just arbitrary labels though. This position often gets referred to as the "G position" because the I chord of the key is found in the "G-shape". In this same position, you will find the ii chord in the "A-shape" (made minor), the iii chord in the "C-shape" (made minor), the IV chord in the "C-shape", the V chord in the "D-shape", and the vi chord in the "E-shape" (made minor). He is labeling the "position" using a CAGED name, whereas I am labeling each of the chords within the position using CAGED names. All keys work the exact same way and have the exact same shapes. Hope that helps to clarify!

@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 5 ай бұрын
@@djbny2la I don't think anyone is purposely intending to mislead. I think it's more like the internet has adopted this "labeling system" when breaking the diatonic scale down into 5 positions, and people think that they have learned the CAGED system because of it. A similar issue occurs when people break the diatonic scale down into 7 patterns, and then assign "mode names" to each of the 7 positions...thus leading them to think that they have learned modes.

Hey Brian. I don't really see anything wrong in buddy's diagram. The only confusing part is calling it shape 1, shape 2, etc. One must realize this doesn't refer to the scale shapes but the CAGED shapes. It would be less confusing if he just called it C shape, A shape, etc. Therefore he is showing how to play the different CAGED shapes of the E major chord. What's wrong with that?
@zombieguitar

Because it's not about scale patterns.
@gtrdoc911
@gtrdoc911 5 ай бұрын
@@zombieguitar it kind of is about scale patterns because the CAGED shapes are all contained in the scale. I completely understand the CAGED concept as I know you clearly do too. I'm just not sure why you insist on separating the scale notes and the CAGED patterns because all the CAGED patterns of all the diatonic chords add up to make the scale so the 2 are inseparably related.
@TheSclay
@TheSclay 5 ай бұрын
@@gtrdoc911 Yep totally agree. Brian's CAGED stuff is great, but this odd denial that its somehow anaethema to the scale framework on the fretboard is misguided. His arguments are questionable at best. I've seen all your CAGED rants Brian, and can't see a valid argument anywhere. Naming the 5 positions/ patterns by their CAGED names is both logical and beneficial. Its not the only way, but a good framework nonetheless. There's no confusion. This nonsense about locking a shape to a scale somehow causing big problems if not the I chord is, well, nonsense. The likes of Paul Davids, Justin Sandercoe, Andew Wasson, Brian Sherrill, Ian Stich et al don't see a problem with it, and understand both the logic and the value of integrating CAGED with the scale framework. Anyway, you won't convince Brian any different now. He's lost all perspective on the subject. No personal offence intended Brian. Just calling it as I see it. You need to move on from it mate.
