in Germany it is completely normal to take bottle out of package's and also sometimes I use my bag to transport the stuff before I go pay
@manofnorse
@manofnorse 11 ай бұрын
There were times when bottles couldn't be taken out of closed packages, especially in Aldis and alike in the 1980s and the early 90s. I guess the reason was that the cashiers did just have a code for the package but not for the bottles (During that time the cashiers had to remember codes to type into the cashier machine instead of just scanning the bar code that's on the product).

So fun fact here in the states, a lot of multi pack drinks have only one barcode (the same code on every drink for the pack). So when you scan that code off of one bottle, it rings up as you buying the entire six pack. So if you rip one out so you're only buying the one, it's still the same code telling the register you are buying six. So you end up with a very expensive drink and some rather disgruntled staff. Basically if it's in bulk packaging, it's usually sold as a bulk product and you need to go find the singles somewhere else in the store. Some exceptions apply of course
@boinkadoinkk
@boinkadoinkk 5 ай бұрын
Not at the grocery chain I worked at on the west coast. The barcode on the box is not the same barcode that is in the individual can or bottle. Basically always the case for any normal soft drink. Actually more often than not when it comes to buying multipacks of alcohol that are connected by the plastic 4pk or 6pk connector things, you usually have to manually input how many are in the pack otherwise it’d literally just scan as a single can/bottle. I’ve never come across a barcode on a single bottle that would ring up as multiple bottles…. literally what’s the point of having the barcode on the single bottle in that case lol.

Ya in canada it depends. Growing up in rural small grocers you could buy the flat or a can but I don't think there was a bulk discount. At big stores there's usually separate sections for individual cans or drinks unless it's like Costco where you have to buy the bulk size.

Well... it depends on the sign above. Normally you can do it. But there are sometimes places/special sales that have a sign that says only in packs. (And sometimes it's something you just know as a German... 🤔 probably should be better labeled in those rare cases) Basically: packs in the cooling area should mostly not be seperated. If you are unsure: check if the price for the individual item is listed as well. (Mostly you have the price for the individual item and the price for the pack below, or vice versa) If you can only see the price for the individual item you can decide yourself. In that case it helps to check the weight/volume of the item with the labeled one on the price tag.

Packages that aren't meant to be open have a label that says so.something like the "solds only together" will be written. Those are usually sold in bulk cause the product is on sale. Americans are used to buying stuff in bulk cause they don't have to go to the store every day or every other day. In Europe we usually have different stores in the walking distance and there are many of them so we don't have to go shopping once a month. Most of us also have smaller apartments and don't have a place ,like walk in pantry,to store big amount of food.

This used to happen at liqour stores in Australia. It was really annoying if you actually wanted a 6 pack, but everyone has taken one or two out of all of them. In the end signs were put up telling people to stop opening 6 packs or 10 packs

It's totally normal to take only one bottle out of the package. We do that all the time. Also I always put my groceries in my backpack or bag, it's way easier to carry them around this way

Taking only one is fine unless it’s written that it’s not allowed. Exception is beer. A six pack hast to stay a six pack. Putting stuff in their own bag is technically prohibited but many supermarkets are tolerating it. Reason: It’s “easier” to “forget” something to take back out again, especially when you have already have stuff inside. You can be asked to show the cashier your back and empty it completely if they assume you “forgot” something. Problem: this takes time and patience if all people who are waiting. So if you don’t wanna take a basket or shopping trolley at the entrance and you don’t know how much you want to buy, take an empty(!) box inside. DON’T take stuff out from a box and place it loosely back on the shelf! This is extremely unpopular among the cashiers and you will get told off if you get caught. BTW even though most tolerate the I put the stuff into my own bag method, officially it’s rated as a try to steal and if you’re in bad luck you’ll get confronted by a cashier who’s more strict. “Everything you didn’t already pay for, doesn’t belong in your bags.” Let your kids have a sip from a bottle or a bite from a roll, gummy bears or whatever too btw. First pay, then putting in your bag/eat/drink or officially it’s a try to steal. Greetings from 🇩🇪

Don't do this in an american walmart. It messes up their sales floor counts and it may not even scan at the front register

Yeah, but in a lot of (if not most) European countries that’s standard practice usually you would take from the section of individuals if it exists. But if not you’ll just go wild with the 4/6/8 packs

@@lplatino6427 yeah, the top, both sides, and sometimes the bottom. They all don't work at my Netto. (I am the cashier) When you buy a 6 pack, I usually type it in or a bottle has the scanner poking out and I type in 6 menge and scan it on over. The drinks with a number on them are the best.

In France you can also rip bottle packages, in some stores employee will even broke one in advance for people who don't want to pay a full package. You can also use your own bag without problems, everything's fine as long as you pay in the end.

In America there is a section where there’s a bunch of singular bottles. They’re in glass refrigerators so you can see what’s in them. They’re usually next to the checkout line so you can grab one on the way out.
