Synopsis: Severino “Skerp” Chavez grew up in South Central and currently resides in Watts, Los Angeles, where extremely high levels of violence are commonplace. For over 30 years, Skerp has created graffiti art as both a means of personal therapy, and of beautifying his neighborhood. Graffiti allows Skerp to give back to his community, and fosters what Skerp calls a “collective consciousness” among him and his close-knit community of graffiti artists in South Central and Watts. Skerp seeks to inspire a movement of art in the inner city, which he hopes will ultimately improve the quality of life for community members, and improve the image of poverty and violence that the rest of society associates with his neighborhood.
