If Frankie wanted to take out a life insurance policy on her father, she could do that instead of paying for his policy. If she pays for _his_ policy, then he retains control over who is named as a beneficiary. Imagine she pays for her father's life insurance for 10 years, then he changes the beneficiary to a lady-friend right before he passes away.

That's hilarious and sounds like a strategy my own father would employ if I were on speaking terms with him😂 The whole point of a parent/spouse purchasing a life insurance policy is so that in the event of their passing, their loved ones aren't left empty handed and can also have something to put towards funeral/burial costs.

I wouldn't do it. First, there is a slim chance that the caller could die before her dad. Second, her dad could always change the beneficiary designation without her knowing. At 24, this caller should be focused on paying off any debts she has, and then saving for her future. Whatever money she would spend monthly on this would be better used for other purposes.
@alittlepieceofearth

You might have explained to this young person the purpose of life insurance so that she understands the principle behind it. You get life insurance to replace your income so that in the event of your death, your loved ones aren't left scrambling to pay the bills. You get life insurance so that if you die your spouse will be able to raise your children without having to worry about having to replace your income. Her dad is retirement age and she is an adult. Assuming that he and his wife have retirement funds, and there are no children left living at home, then he probably doesn't need life insurance.

@alittlepieceofearth, Your comment is absolutely spot on and very well explained. I wish this caller and maximum viewers read it. You are so right, most people look at insurance as a form of investment which it is NOT. And as you explained, it is only a provision in the event of a sudden exigency as in premature death or serious accident resulting in inability to continue earning one's livelihood.

This makes me think the parents may have a really poor pension and can't afford it, or dad and mom are planning to rinse through any inheritance in their retirement they could have left for their kids and the life insurance will replace that. Nothing really wrong with that (although if that's the case can't they buy a policy themselves for their children?) but they need to be open and upfront with it all.

the only strategy is in estate planning. Life insurance to be able to end up with family cottage or whatever assets one might not want to be sold to cover costs. If dad doesn't have any obligations that end up with the kid in death, if they even care about them, no insurance. Still, I remember the old saying, no one left behind ever complained there's too much insurance, IF you're not paying for it.

It’s weird because it’s a bad investment. Insurance on old people is very expensive, because old people die a lot. I get the negative comments, but this is probably what the parents are thinking (right or wrong): the bought this policy, not only in the case of emergency if a spouse passed, but that the kids could inherit it after their death if everything went right. They paid the premiums their whole life, but are just a few years short of payments of getting a large lump sum passed down to their kids. If someone doesn’t pay those premiums for the next few years, they wasted their money and on top of that their kids get nothing. Maybe it was a bad plan, but I can see the logic.

Dad should have life insurance just out of respect for his wife (Mom). I doesn't have to be a huge policy. Just enough, or maybe a little more, to bury him pay off the house if they still have a mortgage. Make sure Mom doesn't have to move in with the daughter because the house was foreclosed on. Life insurance isn't there to make someone else rich or serve as an investment. It's there to take care of others that may depend on you in the event you die. Bet you anything Dad is buying a whole life policy with her as the beneficiary and that's why he wants his daughter to pay for it. He's getting it because he was told it is a "good investment".

Why though? The premiums will be so high she probably won't make back her money. Why not just invest that $ in yourself rather than banking on your dad dying in the short term.

Life insurance is a waste of money. You are better off just saving whatever the payments would be.

You can't save enough to match the value of the policy. Say the premium is $25/mo. for a $100K policy and it won't change. To reach $100K even with compounding would take 70 years. Even if the premium is $55/mo., you'd need to save for almost 50 years. This is how insurance works on everything---cars, homes, etc.

Thankfully it was a little over a year ago now, I started an lnvestment with Abby's Services and that allowed me to be on much MUCH more stable ground in the face of global financial upheaval. So thank you, your channel, and your employees. For what it's worth, it made a difference for me and my little family.

@pstanton2445
@pstanton2445 24 күн бұрын
Sorry. Wrong answer, guys. 1) How much are the payments? 2) Can the daughter afford the payments? 3) Is it whole life or term insurance? Some states won't let a person have term insurance after 70. 4) Yes, it's nuts. But do YOU want to hear about it for the next 30 years? I wouldn't. If she can afford the payments, she, the parents and their attorney should meet. Have the attorney draw up an agreement that she will make the payments in exchange for being the sole beneficiary. Include alternates for what-ifs. What if she dies before Dad (it happens: aneurysm, traffic accident, leukemia) who makes the payments, and becomes the new beneficiary? What if she has kids by then. Can her "issue" make the payments, and become the beneficiary/beneficiaries? Plus, by getting it all in writing now, no one can claim he was senile, or mislead later, (and someone will) because I'm sure the attorney will pay attention to that. Dad should also have a thorough physical and psych exam before meeting with the attorney. If he's 65 he's on Medicare, but might still have co-pays. HE should pay those and the attorney fee. The daughter may find that if it's going to cost him $$, he may just drop the whole thing. "But, Dad! I'm just trying to help you!" is your new catch-phrase. Personally, I think Dad's already gone over the edge. He really should be checked. Financial delusions are a big part of dementia.

I believe she would first need to prove evidence of insurable interest, aka be financially impacted by his death in order to do that, but honestly, if he truly loves & cares for her, he should pay it himself. Premiums for a life policy (if he's truly insurable) are relatively minor in comparison to other investments he'd have to "earn" for her inheritance, imo.
