It's still international project and no one could possibly do that alone. The collaboration is between many nations not just in space but at ground too, using infrastructure all over the world.

That's from NASA's proposal for a manned mission to Mars with the Constellation program, which consisted of 3 ships, built in 7 launches. 3 identical Nuclear-Thermal Rocket sections, 2 landers, 2nd fuel tank and a crew module, plus an Ares I launch for the crew.

But that would give a very high g during the half turn. For manned payloads you'd want a longer tether. That would mean the CoG would have to be higher but the docking would be easier. The deltaV is dependent on the specific strength of the tether and doesn't vary with tether length.

And what materials are those? Also, for the spacecraft to fly up and stay there for a while they need some horizontal velocity to complete the orbit. Seems to me on a straight long cable you'd only get vertical velocity, meaning you'd be in sub-orbit, couldn't really dock during that.

I think that we should be investing into space elevators, they are the cheapest(once they are built) ways to get up into space. And they don't depend on fuel. Then there is electronic propulsion for in space, although currently it is impractical .

He is launching the Falcon 9/ Dragon from the american launch center in Florida toa space station built primarily with the American shuttles. He is also in negotiations to help build a private spaceport in Texas

So what do you do there exactly? Aerospace engineering? Did you have a job before working there or did you get it out of college? What school did you attend? I'm thinking about Georgia Tech because it is the 3rd best Aerospace engineering school in the US with a fairly high acceptance rate. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really curious and your reply was a welcomed bit of insight!

The point is rockets that can go into space, and then come back down, without breaking apart. Thus minimizing costs.

SpaceX is so important and awesome. Whole humanity should be concentrated on space exploration, its the most important task our species will ever have. We need to make life multiplanetary. We have to spread in to space. Imagine if we could stop wasting money and resourcess on military gear and religions and used them on space exploration instead. We could learn so much, we could achieve so much in just decades.

These people said "Screw you taxpayers, we're going to space!" and threw off the shackles that have prevented NASA living to its full potential since its inception. Look how far they came in just 10 years because of it. Imagine how far they'll go in the NEXT 10.

I'd love to work for Spacex more than almost anything else in the world. I even went so far as to visit (well, stand outside) the Hawthorne facility when I was in LA last year. Sadly it's not possible for the company to employ anyone who is not a US citizen by birth due to ITAR.
