I was on the team that made these games, Simbin, the only pity was the team split during the production of this game (GT2)......A majority of the team split to form "Blimey" and work on other things including that Ferrari game and PC1 / PC2 etc, I remained with "Simbin" to work on the rest of the titles right up to RaceRoom, along with a handful of others. Was a real shame to see how things shook out in the end. GTR2 was the most complete title, that is what made it unique and so special for so many years IMO.

Thanks for the video Mike. The GTR games are special to me. I remember when Toca 3 was big and then Simbin dropped the GTR demo. Lister Storm at Spa and i believe at some point also the Viper at Anderstorp. And it was incredible. The sound, oh man the sound was unlike anything else. And so was the driving. I considered myself quite good at racing, but i really had to relearn how to race in a proper sim. GTR and mainly GTR2 were also the first racing sims i played mostly online. GTR was a wet dream for someonw who loved the Viper GTS-R and GTR2 while less Vipers, it had the beautifull Saleen S-7R. Cars i loved watching the FIA GT series on TV. The games definetely had a great singleplayer bit too, and the full roster of the FIA GT series, as well as some absolutely fabulous and for simracing pretty obscure tracks like Brno, Enna Pergussa and Anderstorp that are absolute blasts to race on. As wel as being what i would say is probably the peak of GT racing was, before the infinitely more drivable but also much more boring GT3 cars started to take over. I just loved these big GT1/2 cars in FIA GT & ALMS. Was quite happy to see these cars being brought back to life in AC. Would love to see a remake of this game. RRE just didn't have that same feel to me with the limited F2P and lots of buyable content and lack of the big series licences. The only game that struck the same itch was ironically ACC with the GT3's :D But so many great memories from the GTR series. (Not to forget GTR Legends)

I think what people love about this sim is the era in racing it represents as much as the actual gameplay. The cars were a lot more raw and analogue. It's pre-SRO, pre obsession with BOP, and with a lot more eclectic entrants (what ever happened to Lister?) GT3 cars today are far more aero dependant vs those days and have a lot more prototype in them in how you drive them

Games like GTR2, RFactor, Race 07 prove that sim-racing never was about the graphics. It's all about physics , A.I and audio. The reason why Simbin's audio is so good is because Simbin is a Swedish games studio. Sweden is very big on audio production. Historically they have top level sound engineers in Music, TV and Radio, It's the same in games. Listen to the car audio in Dice's Rallisport Challenge 2 on the Xbox. It's easily the best on the system. It's funny to me how most sim-racers are desperate for classic race cars and race series in their modern sims, but hardly anybody wants to play or support a classic racing sim no matter how good it is. If more people played these racing sims then the online servers might be still working today.

A big part of the appeal for GTR2 is the cast of cars. There's so much variety, even within a make (the Wieth Ferrari 550 GTS laps sometimes seconds a lap slower than a Prodrive-made Ferrari 550 GT or a Italtecnica-built 550 Millenio), different tyres per team, even different interiors ! And great differences between the quasi-obsolete Porsche 993 (1993 and air-cooled !), the Vipers that had their heydays a few years back but were slowly receding,...and the "new generation" such as the Maserati MC12 or the Ferrari 575M. All are very different to drive, from the GT, the NGT, even the G2-G3 classes from the 24h of Spa. No BoP here, you can give yourself much more of a challenge by picking a "slow" car. Winning a race in a nearly 10-year old Porsche hits really different.

@nicklibby3784Ай бұрын
I don't know man, I think AMS 2 looks really really good, and actually gets great performance too. But it is also because Reiza used the same "graphics techniques/strategies" these old games used. Reiza really refined and completely renovated that madness engine. They actually dumbed down a lot of graphical things compared to project cars. But it was a good thing. Like no reason to have 3d trees everywhere or all 3d crowds etc. just use a very very very good "Art style" combined with a few 3d trees / crowds in the important up close spots. They focus on detail where it really matters, and then use a brilliant art style for the rest which creates a beautiful looking game that actually runs very good. Reiza somehow made AMS 2 looks better than PC2 AND run/perform better than PC2. It's easy to get a lot of frames. It's why AMS 2 has one of if not the best VR performance in all of sim racing. They are still using graphical technique's from old 2000s games but refined better, and then combine it with detail where it really counts. Many modern games have lost focus on "art style" because graphical improvements made them seem less important. Whereas with old games, the graphical limits of the hardware and engine made it so you had to have a really good art style if you wanted the game to look good. Assetto Corsa also looks very good, CSP has made massive improvements with lighting, reflections, shadows etc. but performance is perhaps not always as good as AMS 2, it is close though. I feel like AC can still be lacking in textures, models, and aliasing. But these are pretty minor things. AC can also be tricky in the lighting/shadows/reflections department due to the fact it is mods and sometimes it doesn't combine well with older cars (even kunos cars) or specific mods, or sometimes it can seem overdone or exaggerated - luckily everything is customizable and you can fix this. It's just a little difficult to have AC look it's best across a variety of time of days/weather's/ and different tracks. For example, with some CSP settings the game might look really good at mid day with cleaner or sunny with clouds weather, but then when it gets cloudy or rainy it looks off, or if it becomes sunset it looks off or not good. I think AMS 2 is more consistent, but AC has the capability to look extremely stunning, you just have to tweak and customize for the specifics if you want it to look at its best all the time. Nevertheless, some of these old games still look really good. GTR2 and AMS 1 especially. Reiza used the same "art style" techniques in AMS 1 to make up for the graphical limits and setbacks of the rfactor 1 engine. AMS 1 is amazing because it is almost quite literally Rfactor 1.5. basically Rfactor 1 but upgraded, better ffb, more complicated physics, and much much better looking graphics even though the graphics actually aren't all the different.

You are leaving 2 -3 seconds free time on the table each lap just by not using all the track on corner entries. I have noticed the same with my own driving at times, it's strange that when sitting on the left you'd expect this would be the side that's easiest to get closer to the track edge but it's because it spooks us feeling like we ourselves are sitting too close to danger. If you notice you are hitting the apexes and running the white lines on the right side, but leaving at MINIMUM a whole car's width if not 2 cars widths on your left. I'd recommend bringing the car to a stop exactly where you are at turn in point on right hand corners (slow hairpins even better) and then change to 3rd person view and look at where your car is positioned. You'll be shocked to see just how far you are from track edge! Then very slowly from that 3rd person viewpoint, very slowly take the car over until your tyres are just barely touching the grass/gravel and then jump back in the cockpit cam. Then align something on the dash up with this point and use it as a reference for that car. Easily 2 -3 seconds on the table on average per lap just by using the full width and thus carrying more speed, not everslowing. All the best! 😉✌

Since Ams2 is using I.S.I pmotor physics, I think Reiza is simply re-tuning the madness engine to behave like rfactor2 with the more "advanced" SETA tire model, albeit with a better graphical and quality of life UI. All these comparisons are pointless, these games are tuned to developer preferences, and the engine probably covers 90 percent of your favorite driving sims, with the exception of Kunos and Papyrus.

Good insight. Could be.

So funny you released this video! I am reviewing what I believe are the 8 best single player experiences in sim racing in a tournament format and GTR2 is the oldest title on my list for this reason right here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYXQYoSnZt9siKc

This game AI is thousand times better than ACC AI, I hate ACC AI.

To be completely fair, the number of times the AI could deny you an overtake by simply covering the inside is one serious gripe I had watching the footage. That said, even modern sims have issue with AI not really doing basic defence, so it's not like GTR2 is terribly antiquated in that regard. AI is one of the aspects that get sadly disregarded by most racing sim devs, and it's one of the areas where F1 games, at least the good ones, shine in comparison.

On top of that, the AI hits each other when lapping, damaging their aero, so around 45 min. Mark they slow down a bit. Raising the minimum force value to damage aero helps. I raced in a 6hr "24hr" Spa 2003 event in NGT car and won overall (fun fact, NGT 911 won that race IRL) - AI would pit, do a fast lap or two and run slow laps untill they pit again, repeating the cycle.

This is novice mode
@steelin666Ай бұрын
@@peevee88 There's no such thing in GTR2 as 'novice mode'.

@@peevee88 Novice/Semi-Pro/Simulation modes don't change AI, they mostly change what assist you can turn on, limit AI difficulty and aggression.

AI in Half-Life 1 or 2 is still better than 99,9% of modern FPS, Age of Empires 2 is still the best RTS, movies were better in 2000s, F1, boxing, NBA, etc... some things just somehow regress with time... 🤗

sometimes is just nostalgia, we grew older and our passion still is with our sweet older titles. but one thing is sure, things where much simpler back then

@@jesuisFORTIO some things I listed above are OBJECTIVELY better, some are subjective ofc.

Yep, and its not nostalgia. Well there is obviously nostalgia involved, but only to a certain extent. I also fully believe the best games from the 2000s are better (and alot more in terms of numbers) than anything after. This might be because I grew up with it but the graphics from this era has a certain charm that I just love. I love the "gloomy" and gritty artsyle this era had in games tbh, I think it has aged really well.
