We have that same charger at work. It’s about 18 years old now and still works like new. It replaced another one, same model that had been around for probably 20 years until a 983 Cat loader backed over it. We changed the wheels on it, from the little ones it came with, to a set of 14 inchers. Makes rolling it over gravel and ruts much easier.

No wonder this battery charger is expensive. It actually works. Consumer grade battery chargers used to work fairly reliably, but that was way back when Sears Roebuck competed with Montgomery Wards.

I'm sold. All the newer off-the-shelf "smart" chargers suck. Many won't even turn on and attempt to charge if the battery voltage is too low. Give me an old school "dumb" charger any day.

I have a snap on I purchased around 1983. It was the largest 12 volt charger they had with a 550 amp boost and 70 amp charge plus it can be used outdoors in any weather, rain doesn't affect it. It also has the built in polarity checker in the ground clamp.

I use an 1970’s - 1980’s 120 volt to 12 volt converter from an old motorhome. Just added a timer switch, grounded power plug and heavy duty jumper cables for the output. These are heavy duty weighing in at about 40 pounds and will charge just about any battery even if it is completely dead. They also have a regulated 12 volt output if needed.

You are rite on the money! The very first shop I worked at in the mid 80's had one of those chargers. Same box same wheels same handle with the cross bar to attach the cable clamps and it looked like it was 25 years old back then. Charged every thing from a four 12 volt old Pete to the shop forklift flawlessly remember it as soon as you rolled it out , VERY BEST CHARGER !

I have an Associated Charger in my home garage. Probably overkill, but I wont have to turn around in 5 years to get another one anymore. Just got tired of the cheap chargers. I'm an Amateur Astronomer and my big scopes run on car batteries. I've found that I do alot more charging for everyone in the family because they know my charger will get the job done, and fast.

When I started wrenching in 1969 the place I worked for had two chargers one a sun the other was associated they were old when I started there the died 4 years later I worked there to 1976 and it still worked great we also had a starting unit in a pickup from associated it always worked and it was not new either those two were still worked well when I moved to a better job. I was living in Minnesota then so they had a workout all winter long.

I had an old all metal Craftsman 225 on wheels that lasted over 24 years. I literally had a verbal cussing episode when it smoked and died. I bought a supposedly good but plastic POSheet from the Amazon monopoly, it lasted 2 charges. So that cost me $100 a charge. I’ve been hesitant to go the Schumacher route and now you confirmed my thoughts. I know the one I want now from Associated but it’s a grand😞

Pro mechanic, need a home charger. I do quite a lot of work at home. I cannot decide between a 6010B ($466) and a 6002B ($852). I've never needed 24 Volts, but there's no option on the 6010B (discontinued A model had 12V hi, m, lo - B only has hi and lo with no stated max amperage for lo). For the 6001A vs 6002B, it's $100 difference, so no way I'm not just going all the way if I'm spending that much. Considered the US20 ($180) 10/40/200 for 12V), but it sold out while I was deciding and it has a lower end rectifier and transformer (2yr vs 5yr warranty - care less about warranty than it just being dang good). These are the only 3 I'm considering because I want FULL MANUAL (even the middle of the road Associated 6012/6009/6006AGM chargers have a PCB) and a timer after my experiences with auto chargers. For example, my DSR Schumacher "Pro" series will not charge a discharged battery, sometimes even after tricking it into starting (it will test again once into the cycle and stop, calling a good battery bad). I also very much like the thought of US made, parts availability and serviceability, and I like the color blue, ha. My old Sears 2/10/50A works great, but I need to go faster. I like the idea of being able to charge up a battery and then leave it on a trickle with the same unit (6002B on lowest 12V setting) if I want. That said, I do have the other two chargers to more delicately get to 100% state of charge, but it's a hassle to swap chargers and then potentially have to set a timer on my phone or something. On the other hand, I really like the idea of having a portable fast charger with 230A UL rated jump, and I rarely need more than that (although I do occasionally need more than the jump packs I have available - or even a well used huge one). I could throw the 6010 in my Suburban with ease for anything mobile. And then there's the issue of price, but I don't even care that much anymore after all the hassle and lost time. But on the other hand, money saved could go into a power supply fund in case I ever go down that road... but I want at least ONE big old, fully old school charger. When I decided it was time, I looked for used manual chargers. Even fine with old and lower end than associated if it is manual and works and not overpriced. I tried to buy a few, but Facebook marketplace is literally hell, and all others are 2+ hours away. Been looking hard for a while now. The ones I do find are typically asking more than what I can buy for new, or they're just overpriced for their condition. Someone push me over the edge here. Do I go 6010B or 6002B? Or do I just wait and keep searching for an acceptable used unit? I know any of these options will work, but I'm in the worst possible state of analysis paralysis. Any opinions are welcome if you took the time to read my neurotic comment, haha. Thanks and thanks for this video! Not a lot of them out there about these chargers, not even a lot on the forums that goes in depth or compares features all that much. I'll make a video about whatever I end up with. Too many of us have been bit by "smart" chargers.

I have the similar model charger from the early 80’s. The cord and leads had begun to crack and rot from age so it was being thrown away. On its way to the dumpster it took a detour into my pickup instead of the dumpster. With a little electrical tape it’s served me well for the last 7 years, and I don’t anticipate junking it any time soon.

Had one like that 20 some years ago but it only lasted about a month. Worked great until my boss ran it over with a terex scraper (may God have mercy on it's soul). Never seen a charger so flat before.....could of put it in a suitcase. Put the charger on the rear engine batteries and told the boss it should be good to go after lunch. Told him about the charger but he decided to see if it would start then backed over it and took it over to our big shop where I was going to oil change and grease it. I asked where he put the charger so I could put it back in the service truck and he said what charger? I told him about the crime the charger was first then the 100' extension cord held on for about 50' as he dragged it away. The flattened charger was dragged about 200' before it gave up. All that was left was the ground cable that hung on with super strength for the last 4000' to the big shop. Told the boss it kinda makes the ole billfold weep in silence huh. Our rule was don't move any equipment without doing a walk around....he broke that rule.....and the charger. He made that rule a year earlier when he flattened a charger with the C6 dozer he put a charger on.....kinda looked like a waffle.LOL When I started that job everyone told me, keep one eye on what your doing and the other on the boss. If I had to take an eye off anything never off the boss.......kept me alive for 40 years. But yet I couldn't win the lottery.

They are awesome battery chargers for sure! I would love to own one but my 40-50 year old Century Manufacturing battery charger from my grandfather fits my needs when a newer "smart" charger isn't good enough. However, I wonder about their claim of 400 amps of starting power? Unless my math is wrong that would be physically impossible from a standard 20 amp 120 volt wall outlet. Either way, still a bad ass charger!

From a 120 volt 20 amp service (2400 watts available) theoretically at a 6 volt setting 400 amps could be supplied. At 24 volt setting max out is 100 amps.

This Charger, along with many other "Transformer Based" chargers is one of the best out there if you are in a Hurry, and you know how to use the thing, watch the voltages with a volt meter, and step it down at the correct time -during the charging sequence of Bulk, Absorbtion, Float and Equalization. The best overall commercially obtainable charger that in know of on the planet is however is the Solar PL2320. Battery charging and recovery, like anything, requires some finess and is easily overdone... And yes i also work on big things with lots of batteries and i have tried at least 20 different battery chargers by now...

Love the show thank you for being honest love to you of the battery chargers. This is so important for people to know because corporate America they love to lie so they can make a dollar but they teach the young people to grow up. Tell the truth don’t lie and see lies every day all around us, even from the top people around us this makes such a big difference so people can know and make the companies step up and do the product right because of Main product. Did you talk about they have a bad reputation right now they used to be good really good among the best, now they put out crappy service basically crappy crappy products you can’t depend on so the other company associated products or whatever you call them their top-notch right now that company nothing nobody can say that they are very expensive but you get what you pay for pay a lot of money you get a lot of product You can’t pay anything inspect to get something doesn’t quite work that way keep doing what you’re doing. I love it. I’m retired now I miss it around. The batteries have lined up for different systems. I would build and you need a good battery charger and good batteries no crappy stuff That just wears you down the crappy products. I don’t know why companies wasted time but they do because people out there looking for something for 👍👍

I recently bought a new car battery charger with the Stanley name on it. Electronically controlled, it overnight blew up the battery in my F350 truck. Stanley refused to cover the battery charger under warranty and of course did not cover the battery their charger destroyed. Early 70's I bought a small portable Sears battery charger with automatic trickle charge, automatic fast charge and 50 amp boost for starting a vehicle. And it would sense when the battery was charged, decreasing the charging amps as the battery charged. I did not have to "guess" how many minutes to set the charger for. I could set it and forget it. That charger lasted over 50 years of hard use. (I was a serious home mechanic for a number of years). Now I can only find junk portable chargers. If anyone can recommend another portable brand of mechanical (electrical not electronically controlled) battery charger, please let me know. An electronic battery charger will usually have an LED display while an electrical battery charger will always only have a charge meter, not an LED display. Looking for something portable, the one in the video is too large and expensive for my use.

I'm currently considering the Associated 6010B. Portable and manual with a timer. Expensive. Almost wish the A model was still available because I don't need 24V and I'd rather have 12V hi, m, lo instead of just hi and lo. Still undecided. I've spent hours looking for manual chargers and associated is the only US made, higher output battery charger available anymore. Parts are available too. Best price I can find is 466 right now. Rizk is recommended a lot online but their website disappeared around covid time. I'm seriously considering just buying a 6002B for 852 shipped... I'm afraid we're going to hit a point where you can't even find a decent used higher amperage charger... already kind of can't, at least not within 2 hours of me. I'm fed up with my "PRO SERIES" Schumacher DSR that won't charge a discharged battery, and my super old 2/10A sears is great, but no timer and I need more amperage to get work done faster.

Very cool product but for $1,500 I'd make my own charger which was just as capable. And if it had problems I'd call myself up and demand it was fixed

@@codemiesterbeats the biggest/hardest thing to find in this charger is the right transformer... You can get the exact one in this unit for $491, and $52 for rectifier. Seems like you could almost build it from replacement parts for less than $1500

I’ve been lucky with my floor model schoemaker for about 20 year. Recently I did have to replace the time. Other then that no issues. I do agree they aren’t the best but it was in my price range at the time. I do like your clamps much better

How do they provide 400A on a 120V circuit? That would require more than 40 amps at 120V. Does it have a built-in battery, a large capacitor bank, or does it just rely on circuit breakers being slow to trip on a 200% load?

Thanks for the plug for associated! I don't have any 24v systems on the farm, biggest I have is just a 12v skid loader Are the smaller size associated chargers as good as the big one?

It is a cheap price for a battery charger if you consider how many junk chargers you buy before you buy a good one and never buy the cheap junker shumacher ones.

Unsure what the old clunky charger was in 1970 that was a workhorse for sure. Back in the day the day the "go-to" stores were Montgomery Wards or Sears for tools altho NAPA was out there. The average "Joe" workshop can't afford a $1000 or better charger and granted many are crap that don't last more than a half dozen times it seems. I have a 10 year old Black & Decker that does strictly 12v but did buy a Schumacher for $180 that is now 3 years old and working fine. Hadn't heard of Associated but definitely not for sale locally and instead have to contact a regional rep is a pain. A good video for a shop that has a variety of extreme use vehicles to work on. As I have a need for anything from 6v to 12 but not 24 it's a crap shoot among the smaller choices. But I can buy (5) $170 chargers for one Associated so yes, you get what you pay for.
