Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is one of the most important Mexican cultural celebrations of the year.
The entire country uses the opportunity to remember the people and pets that they held dear. Grand alters are built, offerings of a lost person's favourite things are laid out for them, and entire towns are decorated in vibrant orange flowers, called cempasuchil.
The best Dia de Muertos celebration in the Caribbean area is found at Xcaret Park. We never found time to go when we lived in Playa del Carmen a decade ago, so now we are back here, we finally found time to pay a visit.
Each year, the festival revolves around a "guest state." This year, the state was Tlaxcala. Local people from the area came to showcase their local cuisine, art, dance, music, and customs.
The festival did not disappoint. From the cooks who'd spent hours cooking meat in ground ovens to the impressively choreographed grand dance routines, the party celebrated everything that was great about Tlaxcala and its culture.
As always, however, the standout exhibitions were the Dia de Muertos alters. People, businesses, and schools had all spent days constructing their designs, and their efforts paid off. You can see some of the best examples in our video.
The Xcaret festival runs for four days, from October 30th to November 2nd.
