Thanks for your reviews!!! I went through many videos reviewing the Remarkable, Supernote and Boox e-ink tablets before I decided to give a chance to the Tab Ultra C. It's not perfect, as there a few glitches here and there in the UX but I am very satistifed with the experience so far. I wanted to get rid of all my paper notes, improve my workflow using Obsidian and have an alternative screen to rest my eyes. Thanks to your videos and those of My Deep Guide and Brandon Boswell, I could have a proper idea of what to expect before committing. These have been super helpful, so wanted to leave a mark of appreciation here! Can't wait this technology is ready to replace my monitors...

So, for me, it will finally be usable if/when the larger (13,3 inch) color version is released. I have used a larger iPad Pro for reading and learning since 2016 and never looked back (to a smaller screen). Also, owning a Max Lumi has convinced me that it is the minimum size of the screen to enable reading pdf-s without hassle (unlike smaller screens). So, until a bigger color e-ink screen appears, I will continue on using an iPad for reading scientific (and other) texts and documents where color is important, using computer glasses to save my eyes. As far as I know, the only confirmed 12 inch e-ink color device will be available on Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Twist, with full Windows support.

@@ObiKKa Well I think nobody reviewed it since it is still not available for purchase, as far as I have gathered (I will gladly be corrected). I only managed to find some videos of it from a trade show in Japan, there is no mention of it on the fujitsuquaderno site, and it is available for preorder on goodereader site, which is neither here nor there, because there is absolutely no indication of when it might become available. I am sure it will be reviewed on some of the channels when it becomes available. Personally, I would prefer a Boox device, since I am already somewhat familiar with their ecosystem, and have seen that their GPU acceleration and super refresh technology really makes a difference in usability. Last, but not least, an important indication is the availability from a reputable site (with the ability to deliver to EU, for example).

Just got my Tab Ultra C which Im really enjoying. The biggest issue so far is, it's not very comfortable to hold. The edges feel sharp and that's a really bad design flaw. Am hoping someone comes up with a rubber grip attachment to make it easier to hold.

I had bought one with the keyboard case. I am processing a return for it, however. Since you are comparing it to an iPad, I have never lost the connection between the iPad and its keyboard. With the Ultra C I was constantly losing that connection. Even the tiniest movement would throw off the connection. It was so frustrating. I was also losing a good 15%/hr in battery life. That is also not acceptable for an e-ink device. I did not like the writing experience due to the camera bump on the back. I also did not like the way yellow, red, and orange looked on the device. I will likely wait to see what the next Note Air looks like. This was not a fit for me, however.

The keyboard connection is a huge problem. It’s really difficult to use it. It disconnects at the slightest movement, so the screen starts to rotate and then it takes a few seconds to recommend. The spacebar is hit or miss. Same with the screen rotation.

@@herzlboy I may have gotten a bad case, although others have expressed similar frustrations. KBM has a tip on using it in his Mini C - TUC comparison from today. The keyboard case has its benefits. @aline.tech.reviews

I don't feel they're even up-to-date with their primary devices - though it looks like they are maybe making an effort to get there. Security patches are lapsed quite a bit and they're only just now catching up (at the same time, Android 11 is going to stop getting security patches in the next year or so). That said, Onyx does promise at least 3 years of firmware updates for their devices. I haven't been in the ecosystem long enough to know if they fulfil that commitment.

Just got the Tab Ultra -C yesterday and have been testing it. Few things make it hard for me to justify the high cost. The screen is very dark which has already been mentioned and due to the fact it has a colour filter but here in London on a dark cloudy day while indoors I have to turn on the front light, which quickly starts to drain the battery. Now this would not be needed under the same conditions while using other e-ink non colour devices but definitely needed on the Tab Ultra-C. Second thing is the device is quite notceably heavy and therefore if you think you will also use it for night reading while laying in bed, then forget it. Is it true that you cannot upgrade this to the latest Android release? If that is true then no point getting an Android based e-ink, at least for me.
@aline.tech.reviews
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
I had the same cons of the Tab Ultra C in my review. Even indoors with lights overhead and sunlight in the window, it's still too dark and I am always running at 100% front light. Yes, it is true that you cannot update to the latest Android; technically, a better way to phrase that is you are limited by Onyx's capability to upgrade the Android version. This will prove difficult for them as they are modifying the Android builds. They will likely always be on an older version and skip ahead multiple versions at a time, and stay there for years, vs. updating regularly like you might be familiar with on your smartphone.

Why is everyone concerned about Android updates? I own a tablet and a smartphone which I did not update for last 6 years and I don't even want to, don't forget that with each new update it will slow down your device!
@aline.tech.reviews
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
@@edwardlupp7451 - Well, it's the exact opposite reason of your false assumption! Contrary to that belief, new updates do not "slow down" your device. It's the opposite: in that they provide performance optimization updates and make things run more smoothly. There do exist rare occasions where an update can go so far out of bounds of what your hardware supports (in which case your hardware is no longer optimized for the updates) - but most manufacturers stop updates before that could potentially become a problem. In a lot of cases, if you don't update, you won't be able to use apps anymore. For example, an iPad I have from 6 years ago can no longer install new apps from the app store - so it is dead. The reason people want (I will go as far as to say need) Android updates is for security. Vulnerabilities exist and get exposed all the time, these updates patch those vulnerabilities - reducing the risk potential for you to lose data. Secondarily, it is for all the new features, settings, layouts, and the performance updates mentioned above. Simply put - you should not be using a device that has not had 6+ years of security updates. That's insane and potentially dangerous. It is ignorant to not update your devices.

This looks amazing. I have one of the predecessors, the Nova3Color Boox, and it's already a vast improvements over my other, again older device, the Buoye Likebook TD-80. The progress in responsitivity and smoothness is quite impressive. And to now see this newest Boox device, and how good the colors now look compared to my Nova3, and how smooth and responsive it works... it's impressive. About battery life - in my experience, it's always a good idea to install the app "Greenify", which helps forcing unnecessary processed into hibernation. How much it improves things varies from android device to android device, but on my likebook, it vastly improved the battery running time.

How is the handwriting to text? Does it have a ‘notebook’ option for handwritten notes?
@aline.tech.reviews
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Handwriting to text recognition is decent with the "AI" conversion. I write in all caps and consider myself to have poor handwriting, and it still gets most things correct. It can take a while on larger notepads. It also gives you a "reform" option that lets you hop in and make corrections where it got things wrong - since the icon is labeled "AI", I'm wondering if it may learn to recognize your handwriting better over time as you train it (just a speculation though, this hasn't been proven by me). If by 'notebook' option you mean adding guide lines for you to write within, then yes! It has many pre-made background templates and multiple different line heights of that notebook style of guides for you to choose from (super tall vs super skinny).

Nearly every third-party drawing app on this device suffers from a massive input delay (meaning the spot in which your pen is at is always nearly 1 full second away from where the line is actually drawing). This is the same with finger/touch drawing input. It's only optimized for the default Boox Notes app - where the drawing latency is perfect. I believe it's also pretty good in OneNote as they have been working on that. You can export your notes to PNG / PDF to put into other apps if needed.

Thanks for the review, can you share (if you know) if this device supports editing on canva?
@aline.tech.reviews
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
It does supporting editing on Canva! ..but, it's not a super fun or smooth experience. In default Canva, you have to keep in mind that you can't see most of the colors (you can see color, but you don't really know what color that red you see might be on a computer/phone/LED screen - it could be bright red, deep red, pink, maroon, or even purple.. but on the Tab Ultra C it will look like a dark red). You can drag elements around and place them with your fingers or pen.. there's a little input delay but not a ton. In the whiteboard/drawing mode Canva, there is a massive pen input delay so you can't really use it effectively to draw anything. This is true in just about any painting or drawing app, the pen/drawing experience on this tablet is only really optimized for the default Boox Notes app.. any other app has a major latency problem (meaning, when you draw a line, the line you drew won't appear for a second or two after you've drawn it. It would work for small tasks.. or maybe even prototyping, if you only planned to mock stuff up on the Tab Ultra C quickly, then port it to a computer to fix the colors and finalize it. For this use case, though, you'd probably be better of with a normal tablet.

If Onyx were to release the kernel in the future to create a custom ROM or, alternatively, an ARM-based OS with a Linux foundation, it would be fantastic! There are already a thousand distributions out there, and if they added UEFI support as a bootloader, that would be top-notch! I'd buy 100 of these right away, hahaha XD. I say this because spending 650 euros on a tablet/ebook/PC when we know that display technology will change, and Android updates will eventually stop, is a difficult choice to justify. Instead, if they offered something more, we would have the added value of being able to contribute to a large community and have a consistently upgradable product that retains its value over time. I think Onyx should consider this perspective. More popularity would mean the product becomes well-known, reaching a broader audience. Today, few people are willing to spend 650 euros on a tablet; they think twice. But if they could get a device that remains useful and upgradable for many years, it would be a much more appealing choice. From my point of view, if I have to spend 650 euros, I'd rather do it for a laptop than for a device that becomes obsolete and unusable after just 3 years.

I use Notion almost extensively for my script and project writing and just reviewed the TUC. I can say the input is quite delayed with the keyboard case cover and it's a bit Notion is a bit wonky on Android in general. Specifically here, I have noticed lots of sync/save issues (sometimes I've lost entire paragraphs or they get moved around due to the delay of my input matched up with the time Notion is trying to save). Usable once you get used to it, but I'm considering switching to the default Boox text notes type and copy/pasting that into Notion once I'm completed or ready to work on a computer. The experience of typing there is just better even though you don't get all the goodies/markup that Notion offers (it seems limited on android anyways).

I think if i go the Boox route, I'll stick with the Ultra bnw. The color is nice, and I actually like the cooler pastels, but it's a nicety for my writing-focused use case. Plus, it darkens that screen so that you are forced to use the front light more often. That keyboard case is... cramped. I might just do the normal case and buy a Logitech MX Keys Mini (Bluetooth) for when I need a keyboard. Sure, you send up carrying two things, but ... Just a better experience. And you'd often leave the keyboard behind anyway. Great review. UPDATE: Onyx dropped the price in their Tab Ultra (black and white). At least in the states.

Nope. I'm still certain it's top of the list. I wish they would better optimise for battery when using in some states that don't require much GPU power. Thanks for the review, i'm old user of reMarkable (at Crowdfunding time) I still have to major concerns 1. What about syncing data ? reMarkable are still weak years after. Because it is a secondary device it is very important to have transparent sync. 1.1 and for instance how do it behave with a PowerPoint with heavy video (because content is a king in presentation) 2. What about of OCR ? again reMarkable is a big mess on that, you have to select the content you want to OCR. The real "magic" is a device that OCR, Index and Search ALL your notes without thinking. It's "paper on steroid". And Tech (like Microsoft Read) already exist for that. Bonus: you said you reply to your email. But what if you want to answer for instance with a copy/past a link of a youtube video you see, etc ... On a multiscreen desktop it so fast opening a tab copy/past. On that kind of device I think you still juggle ?

Hi Kit. Can I ask you for a Boox tip? I am trying to find out the best way to use the keyboard (or any BT keyboard) when using the Outlook app. I generally disable the Onyx auto preview banner as I often can’t even see what I am typing. I have tried different ways but cannot figure out how to use autocorrect and autocapitalize (ie. autocapitalize after a period or just when writing “I”) in Outlook. I have no issues with this on my iPad. I’d like to use Boox more when using Outlook and give my eyes a bit of a break as I often have a lot of emails to go through. Have you been able to autocapitalize/autocorrect on your keyboard? What settings or options do you use? I have even posted on this Reddit and no replies. Thanks for the help!
@KitBetts-Masters

Hiya, yeah, I use the Boox floating thing on as I type. I think that the problem is that on android the auto correct, auto caps etc is built into the keyboard app rather than the outlook app. So I guess on e you are using a physical keyboard this option disappears. I'd suggest writing your idea into the feedback via settings and see if they can improve that experience of using the physical keyboard for everyone because the floating suggestion thing isn't great!

I don’t think it is possible. This is the reply I received from Boox feedback: Hello, we tested that other Android devices also do not have automatic capitalization when connected to a Bluetooth keyboard. The iOS system Bluetooth keyboard has a separate physical keyboard setting case and error correction function switch, which cannot be effective in some third-party applications. If you are connected to a Bluetooth keyboard, you need to press the keyboard caps lock key to switch. If you use the on-screen virtual keyboard, you can enter it in [Settings] [Language Input] ONYX, and set to turn on the first letter capitalization.

Is it really such a big issue? From time to time I can see a slight delay in my first stroke but is it a dealbreaker? Not for me, maybe I am more tolerant. Everything has a delay if you look close enough. Some things have matured and improved over time. Your keyboard response rate is now measured in milliseconds but that was not always the case. Other things you don’t realise there is a delay is your speech, but that’s a whole other story 😉 But as always good video!

I sent back this device after 3 days of using it. I think it's for no-one. Too bad as an iPad replacement, not so good as a notetaking device because of the dim screen, the writing surface and hard edges. The Note Air 2 Plus is much better for writing. So is the Tab X. The use-case with the keyboard folio is a complete misunderstanding - a laptop or a desktop computer is much better for this kind of writing. Battery life much worse (like - 6x worse!) than the Note Air 2 Plus. An annoying bug that made using the handwriting keyboard entry unusable (the keyboard is so laggy in the system that the first letter that you write is always missing). NOPE.

Awful camera bump which means it has to be in the case all of the time. Super heavy to hold, over exposed colours losing definition , hard edges makes it uncomfortable to hold. Poor battery life. So compared to eink devices it's not great. So as you say if it's a competitor to an ipad instead, it gets floored completely. So in summary, not great as a enote taker, and not a great ipad alternative. IMHO, air2 for notes and ipad for everything else.

The key features are the color and the reduced ghosting if you are using it where those are important. If those aren't of interest, then indeed one of the B&W devices will likely serve you better. Great video and very informative, but as I watch it I have to wonder if the draw to the device is because you now basically have a _'all singing and dancing"_ computer/tablet with an colour e-ink screen. If that is the case, if e-ink screens improve enough in the next few years to be mass produced to the point that they are more competitive... that could really throw a spanner in the mix and force a reshuffle in many markets because I'm betting that if your computer sported _[touch?]_ e-ink screens. your Boox device might be left on the shelf for much of the day. However, if e-ink screens don't become more financially competitive... _"scratch that"_ as our friends over the pond would say.

While I like the RM2 and Scribe, I still only see them as complimentary devices suited for reading and handwritten notes. I even have the RM2 keyboard, which works well. Yet, I am still working out how I can make good use of it. As for IOS vs. Android, give me IOS. So, I guess personal needs and preferences come into play here. All the features you talk about as if they are revolutionary when they all exist on phones and tablets already and have for years. If you look at it from the perspective of a tablet pc with an e-ink display, rather than an e-ink reader/tablet with tablet features, it is a lot less impressive. The only real difference here is the screen and lower computing power... A lot of this really felt like an undisclosed ad... "Or just kick back and read on a 300dpi screen which is evenly illuminated and is using reflected light, from built in front lights."

Well no, it's not an ad. But yes that is copy to tell you the benefits of a product category that I really believe in. You are taught that android tablets can do all of these things, but very few e-ink tablets can. And yes the only differentiation is the eink screen, but that is the reason that people are interested in these devices. Eink tablets have changed my work life. I wouldn't go back, and no LCD or OLED tablet can be the right place for reading, researching, writing, or keeping notes and planning that these can. Thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated.

Hello everyone, I am currently on the lookout for a digital device that can serve as a replacement for my laptop, computer, or tablet, without causing strain or discomfort to my eyes and head during extended use. Through my research, I have identified two technologies that seem to fulfill this requirement: R-lcd and E-Ink. However, I am open to being corrected if there are other suitable options available. In my quest for the ideal device, I have established the following criteria: 1. Internet access: The device should enable me to fully enjoy the benefits of the digital world. 2. Comfortable usage: I am seeking a device that I can comfortably work on and view for extended periods. 3. Reduced reliance on traditional computers/tablets: Ideally, the device should minimize the need for a regular computer or tablet for work, information consumption, and productivity purposes. While video playback is not crucial, it would be a bonus. After extensive browsing and watching various videos, I have come across several options that might be suitable, varying in terms of price: 1. Color E-ink tablets, such as Onyx Tab Ultra C or BigMe. 2. B&W E-ink Big Tablets, like Onyx boox max Lumi or tab X. 3. Lenovo Twist models that combine E-ink and OLED. 4. A separate screen that supports either of these technologies. Considering cost-effectiveness for my current needs, I am inclined towards two options: a) Onyx Tab X or Lumi, due to their larger screens suitable for work. I may consider attaching a smaller tablet for content consumption, such as reading, in the future. or b) Onyx Tab Ultra C or BigMe, as they offer color support, which can be advantageous. However, I have discovered some drawbacks associated with these models as well. I would greatly appreciate your input and opinions on this matter. Additionally, I have a couple of questions: 1. Where is the recommended place to purchase these products? Should I buy them immediately or wait for a specific timeframe or purchase exclusively from the official store? 2. If you have any other product recommendations that align with my requirements, I would welcome your suggestions. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It synced right out of the box and connected to WiFi immediately. The thing is perfect! Sooo mine will arrive tomorrow. (Been reading off an old Fire) What bugs me are the reviewers that give this product one star because it didn't work out of the box or they were too dumb to figure it out. If it doesn't work send it back and get another one. It couldn't be easier with Amazon. Giving it one star because it didn't work says nothing about a good one that does work. I bet a bad one is one in a thousand or more. Give it a break...just get another one.
