This is the Best Portable EV Charger We've Tested | J+ BOOSTER 2 EVSE Review

This video looks at our favorite portable EV charger to date, the J+ Booster 2. Adapted from a product that originated in Europe, this EVSE packs a lot of punch and versatility for something we can tuck away in the IONIQ 5's micro-frunk. So much so that we intend to take it cold weather camping... but that's for another video!

Freezer test too? Go Steve! This is quite compact/portable for something that’s capable of 40A. I know that Bjorn Nyland in Norway had one very similar that he beat the crap out of.

Purchased for '23 VW ID.4 Chattanooga Model for the same price as the far inferior VW portable charger (which is not included with the ID.4). Connecting to USA NEMA TT-30 RV 125V 30 amp outlet. Amazing construction quality. Worked instantly, charged from 44% to 80% in 12 hours. Now I need to go find out how to get the extension cables. Once I get a 50 amp breaker and NEMA 14-50 outlet this should do 5% battery to 80% in the same time. No reason to look at any other charger for home and portable use unless you need to have the charger on a network or to control on remote (which I wanted to avoid.) I've read it's the only UL certified portable charger in the market - don't know if that's true but it is UL certified. We'll see if the ID.4 is built to the same quality standard as this charger!

We are not allowed to charge our car on our campsite what do you recommend

Other than speaking to the campsite manager to change the policy or perhaps install dedicated EV charging posts (some areas have incentives for this), I'd recommend a fast charging stop at the nearest station prior to setting up camp. Heavily dependent on the location and how far you have to travel post-charge, of course, but if you can charge above 90% and then use slower roads to head to the campsite, starting a camp stay at 60-70% gives you plenty to work with, in my experience.

Why did you choose to charge to 100% instead of. 80% for time metrics for everyday charging? 80% is more realistic.

I was traveling long distance not long after this was recorded, so my limits were set to 100% for road trip mode. Didn't think about it much, tbh, as the power delivery remains the same right up until the final cell balancing at the top of the pack. Whether it's 80%, 90%, or 100%, comparing the time to complete in general still shows the difference in charge times at 120V vs. 240V, which is all I was really going for here.
