As this video instructs, you can go to your original backing pad with the mesh screen discs. However there is a reason a sacrificial backing pad is included. If in fact you do go to your original stock backing pad with the mesh discs, you will wear out the hoop and loop quickly on the backing pad. Reason being is due to the fact that the hook and loop of your original pad will in fact push through the mesh discs and become part of the sanding process. Hence wearing out your original pad prematurely.

About time someone finally did sandpaper. I have asked a few tool review guys to do it. Thank you. I am also currently testing the Diablo Sand Net. So far I like it but need some more real world experience and have to hit the sales. This stuff is not cheap. I was no fan of the Dewalt sandpaper. I need to do a large epoxy river table soon. BTW does anyone know a good scratch resistant coat for an epoxy table?

I always wait for Home Depot to have the 50 pack with backer for twenty bucks. It's an assorted pack but I saw some 50 packs of all one grit for either 25 or 30 with a backer. They sell the backer by itself for five or six dollars, which I think is insane. I have yet to buy those 10 packs for fifteen dollars, just 3 of the assorted packs. They're great for sanding, I got spoiled really fast.

The tan discs are composed of an aluminum oxide blend. The red discs are aluminum oxide. However there is no description as to what the blend is on the tan ones that I can find. If it's a ceramic blend then they would last longer and cut more aggressive and leave a different scratch pattern then the aluminum oxide. Generally ceramic blends or straight ceramic papers like we use, once they fracture, that fracture creates a new cutting point. Imagine a great white shark with rows of teeth, when one breaks or they lose a tooth, a new one falls right into place. Same concept with ceramic paper or in this case discs. As opposed to aluminum oxide paper, once it fractures there is no new cut point established. In our field since we own a hardwood flooring company, all of our cuts on all of our machines are made with 100% ceramic papers. Except the final cut. All our final cuts are made with aluminum oxide papers. Why? Ceramic paper is made for sheer destruction. Quick effective, efficient stock removal. Which if you know how to sand a project correctly, the project get's flat quick with ceramics. But when it comes to the application of finish whether clear coat or stain, the final abrasive should be something softer then ceramics. IE aluminum oxide. Why? Again, the aluminum oxide leave a different scratch pattern. In short, back off on the aggression of the abrasive on the final cut. This doesn't mean grit, it means what the abrasive is made from. One last tip, if you use a random orbital, find out what it's stroke rate is. That will be documented in the owners manual. Most sanders that are quality, IE Festool for example, will have stroke rate of either 5MM or 3MM. The smaller the stroke rate the less scratch pattern you will see on the project. The larger stoke rate sanders are made for quick stock removal. The smaller stroke rate sanders are the ones to want to final sand with.
