Ya well, when you hire a guy whose already a big Star Wars nerd period, to do all this Star Wars voice acting that tends to happen. Not crapping on it at all or the other actors who get cast, it’s just that Sam is basically what would happen if any super fan off the street got their wish and was casted. Because before all his roles, he was just like us super fans who know every bit of this lore knowledge that we can. Cause he was just another giant fan nerd like the rest of us. He would probably be a great asset for Disney to consult if they’d use it more/ pair him with people like filoni and favreu etc overseeing that stuff.

Maul's final request hit me hard. "Avenge us." He wasn't just talking about himself. His backstory was brutal yes but he was also talking about Obi Wan. In fact he was talking about the whole galaxy. He knew Sidious screwed everyone. Obi Wan pitied Maul because he understood that hate was all he knew since childhood that it was what kept him alive. Maul understood that he never truly hated Obi Wan, but Sidious for creating the galaxy wide cluster fuck and using him as a pawn. Luke would avenge and redeem everyone in the galaxy on that final showdown in the throne room

When I first saw this, I was really disappointed that there wasn’t a drawn out fight scene. But as I kept seeing it again, this scene is perfect. The way Kenobi has learned so much while maul was trapped in his cloud of hate and revenge was finally released
@lyntonfleming
@lyntonfleming Жыл бұрын
I think it's also, he's not giving maul a chance. He's going straight for the kill, because his job here is so important. Normally a Jedi would try to disarm a foe, or at least seek less permanent solutions. Here, he just wanted it over as fast as possible. He doesn't have the same energy as he did before and needs to be efficient. Especially since it'd be pretty hard explaining lightsaber burns on tattoine. Or getting medical aid for them
@donaldstancil4377
@donaldstancil4377 Жыл бұрын
To add to your point, it also shows that good and evil are a choice. Kenobi chose to learn from the mistakes of his life. Maul, at first, wasn't given a choice, as he was taken by Sidious as a child. But after he survived his first battle with Kenobi, he could have chosen to let go of his hate and live his life. He obviously chose otherwise...
@salagayikes4016

@@salagayikes4016 Do you think because he needed that dark side hatred of Kenobi to survive his injuries he, ultimately, was not physically capable of letting go and moving on? @lyntonfleming
@lyntonfleming Жыл бұрын
@@donaldstancil4377 I mean he straight up said that it was his hatred for Kenobi that kept him alive. It's pretty common lore that Darksiders can literally be too angry to die. Darth Sion is the best example of this. He died... And then got so pissed off about being beaten, that he forced his body to stand up again and keep on fighting... In unending agony, which only fuelled his power even more. Iirc he was killed by cutting off his connection to the force. Everything else, he shrugged off.

@Lim-dul's Paladin the problem in my opinion is how it showed the growth of kenobi but then maul who we saw loads of development for aswell just feel like a waste because he grew too but in a different way. He had battles with several people that kenobi also fought where he was beating them much harder than kenobi did but instead of any learned knowledge he just uses his apprentice move as if he learned nothing if you get where I'm coming from
@TheSilentCheetah
@TheSilentCheetah Жыл бұрын
@@danielmarrin1578 You forget that Maul didn't just want to kill Obi-Wan, he wanted to humiliate him the same way he humiliated him on Naboo. What better way to humiliate him than killing him the same way he killed Qui-Gon? Besides, much of Maul's hatred that gave him motivation to persevere had turned to Sidious, and Maul had no hope in ever defeating him. He turned to Obi-Wan as a last resort. The fight meant almost nothing to him anymore, but it was the only revenge left that he had a chance to get. He was desperate, and that desperation made him arrogant.

I really think this scene shows Obi-Wans state of mind here. Like at first he's almost relieved to be seeing a face from the past. But then at the start of the duel you realise Kenobi knows now is the time to put Maul down, too much has already been lost to risk this new mission.

Love it The coolest part is when we get more detailed & nuanced exposition on scenes like these from guys like Sam & Filoni who delineate the deeper meanings. I love the small details like Obi-Wan’s stance & the switch to Qui-Gon’s. All the references & symbols are a testament to Saint George’s visionary genius & all the incredible talents he was able to get to realize his story & vision. George had the vision & story but he was smart enough to recruit guys who made it all possible & helped shape it. From original concept artist Ralph McQuarrie who came up with a lot of the designs of characters like Vader & the vehicles in Star Wars to legendary Star Wars soundtrack composer John Williams To iconic sound designer Ben Burtt who came up with the sounds for things like the lightsaber, speeder bikes, Tie Fighters & the Seismic Charge. He had brilliant talents that helped realize the world of Star Wars that made it into the incredible work that it is.

I like to think of the duel between Kenobi and Vader in Ep 4 as more of a mind game than anything. They COULD be doing the flips and hurling barrels and wall panels at each other, but at this point in the timeline, Vader has grown beyond his obsession with hunting down Kenobi, and Kenobi likely knows that this is where his fate lies, and knows that he just needs to stall for Luke, Han, Chewie, and Leia to escape. He needs to preoccupy Vader and distract him long just enough, and it works. Vader immediately leaves his patrol to hunt down Kenobi, not out of obsession, but perhaps more so out of Ego, to show Kenobi how much more powerful he’s become since their last duel in the Kenobi series, hence the quote, “Your powers are weak, Old Man.”

@@jacobwalton1720 I also believe it was the fact maul lost his anger right after his lightsaber was cut. Maul has stated multiple times that the only thing that kept him alive was his hatred of kenobi. When he dies he no longer hated him, the one thing that kept him alive was now gone

What I love about this scene is that obi wan and Darth maul were almost like brothers who hated each other but still cared. Darth maul seems happy when obi wan says anakin is the chosen one and obi wan holds Darth maul and presumably buries him.

That hands down out of all Star Wars movies and small screen productions, is my absolute favorite scene… Kenobi’s dispatching of motion and his comforting of his fallen enemy as he was passing, put this animation into an emotional real world sense.

This video in 30 seconds can teach more than years of practical mindless training could ever do. The mental chess, the memory of previous experiences, the anticipation. this is a clear example of a fight that was already won before they swing.

I love how he held Maul in his arms as he died, truly shows the compassion and detachment from ego Obi Wan had towards the end of his life, and the fact that this was a foe, despite his evil, that he could at least respect.

I love how this fight sort of harkens back to old samurai films that inspired Star Wars. It’s not a flashy dance battle, it’s a moment of tension, a couple of decisive strikes, and then a brutal final strike. If Star Wars was allowed to do it, there would’ve been a fountain of blood pouring from Maul’s chest

Kenobi's mastery of form 3 comes with the most fantastic twist: since his master was a form 4 practitioner, he studied form 4 under Qui-Gon's tutelage for years. He knows how to use it to play a feint on his opponents and then immediately slip into form 3 to initiate that incredible counter-attack. It's very reminiscent of Kararte actually which is my hobby. Karate isn't a martial art for battle and war. It's meant for self-defense and primarily a means to defend oneself in the moments immediately after an attack has been initiated against you. Of course, the big difference is Karate is an empty hand art with no weapons. The spirit, lore, and culture that defines self-defense through martial arts is similar to it though and I love that.
