This may not just be the best time to be a Roblox Game Dev, but be a Game Dev in GENERAL. Roblox is the beginner Engine. Flexible, Well-Optimized, Cheap, and Easy-to-use. The excitement REALLY Starts once you go for Other Engines like Uni- i mean Unreal Engine, It's Less Flexible, but WAY more Accessible as you can Tweak basically Every part of the script case anything goes wrong. Long Story Short, Now's the time to be A Game Dev. IN GENERAL.

This video is quite... mis-representative? I don't say that to imply it's intentionally malicious but I would say it neglects a lot of facts out of what seems like a genuine enthusiasm. So my background is someone who started on Roblox in 2016 when I was 10 off of a recommendation from a friend, and stuck with it until maybe 2020-2021, I developed a LOT of projects here and there the entire time I was on the platform, although I only released public dev tests, showcases, and gamejam projects (most of which are private nowadays) I never really had one moment which made me quit, it was a lot of things, some personal, and some being updates to Roblox, so let's start there Roblox is an INCREDIBLY unstable work environment, the engine is actively being changed while you're using it, and you have NO control over this, even when you're given the option to revert to the old way things worked, it's typically with the expectation it's going to be removed soon, so your project is actively on a timer until it implodes, this includes (but is not limited to) the deferred events system which broke things that badly the editor itself was spitting out errors for 2 weeks, and the almost constant changes to the physics engines and active APIs There is a VERY GOOD reason projects like vibrant venture and unturned moved off-platform, because roblox updates would lead to the decay of your project's code over time unless it's using features which incredibly old projects use, because roblox still tries to keep old unmaintained games working This leads to it sometimes being MORE reliable to use old deprecated systems because the newer ones are constantly changing Speaking of which - old features which work poorly aren't ever fixed for backwards compatibility if they aren't much engine work to keep, a great example of this is wait() still being in the engine despite being objectively worse than writing your own wait() by hooking renderStepped, or just using Task.Wait() - because some incredibly old titles rely on wait() waiting 1/30th of a second minimum/by default to function This leads to an incredibly fractured engine with large swathes of old code and APIs you're told not to use but which will never be removed, and large swathes of new code and APIs you're told to use but which are unstable and frequently changing, all while core engine components (lighting, events, physics) are being rewritten from under you Roblox does a lot of things well - the standards for visuals are low and creating passable art assets in the editor is easy, the animation editor is intuitive, making networked games is easier than any other engine I've used, Lua (and Luau) are both great language choices - but scripting is NOT one of them, and is a core part of making a game Now that I've sufficiently ranted about the programming experience (I could go on but I think I've made enough clear), let's talk about how Roblox is just... predatory... I am completely aware you may be in love with the platform, I was too - once - but the cuts they take are simply not fair, in that every developer is charged for every service made available to them, rather than the services they use, every developer when being paid is charged for game server hosting - even if they got their money from UGC - this includes things like DataStores not all game-devs might be using, or where some devs might only be using bytes/player, where others are using kilobytes/megabytes per player In addition to all of the above, the rest of roblox's ecosystem is a double-edged sword, the engine hampers creativity unless you start abusing engine quirks, as you have little control over the render pipeline with the exception of PBR and some outline objects, and performance will hit a brick wall when you use parts for everything because afaik parts still cause overdraw, where other engines (and MeshParts, but these require blender and then uploading to the website per-asset, which defeats the purpose) would run much better To tie things up because I've been trying to check what I'm saying is well informed and been here an hour (I've not kept up with engine changes much since 2021), there's simply no reason NOW is any better to start than any other time, it's not a bad time by any means, but it's no better than others I'm getting quite tired but I'm sure there's something I've missed or not clarified enough, I'd rather not argue in a youtube comments section, if you would like to chat about this (I think it could be interesting), my discord @ is also my username on here, shoot me a friend request Godspeed

Wow, I can't believe you took the time to write a massive comment like this one, this is awesome! I read through the whole comment. I have to admit that the game creation process can be tricky at times, even I have noticed it. However, I do believe that it's still very possible to create great games in the platform and I also believe that it's truly the best option for anyone who doesn't have any experience in game development. Especially if they wanna make online games. Anyways, thanks for this very interesting and informative comment you've left for us :]

Yea this is a good video… I’m 18 and I’ve picked up Roblox coding several times. I hope it sticks the next few times I dedicate myself to it. I’ve always had video game ideas that’d be great for Roblox but never acted on them. There’s lots of aspects to learn and I’m at that age where I have other responsibilities to worry about. If you’re reading this comment, chances are you’re young enough to not have these responsibilities. If that’s the case I sincerely hope that you give coding a try and make your dream games come true.

Being a roblox developer sounds great by the numbers but it's an awful idea. The playerbase has no interest in playing actual games, really only buys cosmetics or microtransactions, and is annoying to moderate. If you want to churn out knockoff anime battlers, grindy tower defense games, bad platformers, uninspired "horror" games, and lame shooters then roblox works i guess but even then those only get any traction if they're very socialization or pvp focused. Any genre outside of that will get zero attention and make no money, and you'd be better off using an actual engine and releasing on itch or steam. Not to mention that what money you do make basically entirely goes to roblox and you make a very slim cut after that. If you wanna shit out meme games for a decade then go for it but nobody with a brain should even bother

You didn’t talk abt any of the negatives or risks to developing in Roblox, Tried to promote making money instead of doing what you enjoy, and encouraged being a trend follower. Aside from that you seem passionate, or your being sponsored, regardless if you really care about your viewers, don’t preach something that would take serious commitment and time without going over both sides of the argument. Also, you really pushed “right now” when nothing special is happening in Roblox right now, it’s been on a steady decline in terms of quality and safety.
@iamLudius
@iamLudius Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, well, I can't argue with you on the serious commitment part. But in my defense I'm working on a video called the Dark Side of Roblox Game Development that should be published on Friday. I'm tryna get people who are starter devs or people that want to be devs to be more passsionate and since the channel's kinda new I haven't still covered all side of game dev. Tbh, I disagree, I think this is the perfect time to move to unreal engine and make original games as rRoblox is a tempormental platform which is seeing a decline in quality. Though player count has been through the roof lately. But really depends on profit, because unreal takes far less of a cut than what Roblox does. And also the coding language for roblox is pure garb.
