Very good and important point. My own spontaneous kundalini awakening was totally spiritual in nature (what I perceive as Angels and Guides showed up for me) but I had no knowledge of such things so I sought out many books and videos. I wanted to somehow verify to myself that I hadn't gone insane. Fortunately for me, I was also equipped with an amazing B.S. filter -- so over time I managed to sift through what was valid in my own heart experience. In that process I have witnessed many who were 'taken in' by propaganda for profit in their search for answers...
