Real quick correction for the Chrysler Bell Victory Siren: if 138 dB doesn't sound impressive, it was measured at 138 dB 100 FEET AWAY FROM THE SIREN. It could be heard for MILES away. It is still the loudest outdoor warning device ever produced to this day. It was an impressive piece of kit.

I think the important thing to remember is that the decibel scale is logarithmic. Meaning at 1 ft it would be 178db which would actually be 100 times louder. Something else important to note here is that ear drums will rupture at 150 db. Meaning anyone within around 25ft is getting their ears blown out instantly. 120db hearing loss will occur in 30 seconds (everyone within 800 ft) 105db hearing loss will occur in 5 minutes (everyone within 4500ft) 103db hearing loss will occur in 7.5 minutes (everyone within a mile) The limiting factor is probably that they don't want to deafen everyone within a significant radius. Not that they can't make it louder

Later in the SR-71 program the Buick engines were difficult to source. They were replaced with Chevy 454's. I worked in the Side Looking Radar (SLR) shop (reconnissance radar) '82-'86, at Beale AFB, CA. I've never heard of a Buick V6 being used, but who knows? Bench stock in the Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) Shop had Holley carbs and Sun tachs, lol. Regardless of which version of the engine was used, they lived a hard life. Running up to redline, holding it to start the SR, then chopping power caused a lot of wear. If you notice the rear view of the engine during start, there's a green flash (starting at 6:15 of the video). The engines were started using Triethylborane (TEB) a highly volatile abd toxic chemical that ignited when exposed to air. If the SR engine "unstarted" in-flight you used another of the 16 shots of TEB. The TEB was also utilized to ignite the afterburners.

The Skunk Works did extensive testing of the Blackbird’s RCS (RADAR cross section) to design in a lot of stealth concepts. They also used wedges of RAM (RADAR Absorbing Material) on the leading edge to help along with the design features Raymond correctly lists. Certainly not to the standards of today or even the last 25 years but, most definitely stealth in any book.

We had an emergency generator the size of a house at the utility I worked at, and it used a v-8 to start the two C-130 engines to drive it. I believe they were Allis-Chalmers tractor engines. Udvar-Hazy at Dulles has an SR-71 and Tom Lee Jones' character in Space Cowboys describes these very same events. I knew it was time to come home for dinner because our neighborhood Air Raid siren was tested every day at 6PM! Duck and cover... before being vaporized like Linda Hamilton! Signed-2 litre Capri lover.

I'd Recommend to anyone to head over to the IWM Duxford to have a close look at an SR-71, as well as all the other Aircraft they have there. Truly extraordinary bit of kit.

You show a photo of a model year 1968 Buick Wildcat Custom sedan at 5:57 But Wildcat is the name of those Nailhead engines, so they didn't come from just the Buick Wildcat car model. Later on they used Chevrolet LS-7 454 engines for the starter kits.

The idea of thinking a jaguar engine is less fragile than a cosworth has me rolling. I would be surprised to learn that the nailheads in the SR71 starting cart turn 5k under their own power, more likely that is the redline for being overspeeded by the jet. The 401 and 425s used have some really neat design features, if not outright obscure, like the fact that they have smaller valves than a 289 ford (known for small valves) and teeny tiny intake ports due to the vertical valves (nailhead) because the pushrods path of travel.

Someone actually got their hands on one of the v8's from an SR71 starter cart and put it in a car. Coolest engine ever for sure

There are other really cool jets, but the Blackbird is my favourite one, there is nothing quite like the SR-71.

The SR-71 did not replace the U-2. The lockheed U-2 was still flying long after the retirment of the SR-71 In the 2023 Chinese balloon incident, the U.S. Air Force used U-2 aircraft to monitor a Chinese balloon that crossed the United States and Canada. U-2 flights confirmed the balloon's surveillance package was outfitted with multiple antennas capable of conducting signals intelligence collection operations and that the craft had large solar panels to power them.

Surely the greatest engine ever is the tiny little 3 cylinders in the GR yaris comfortably making 300+ HP while doing 30+ mpg... engines who purpose is turning fuel into power and the G16E-GTS absolutely smashes it.

This is correct. I've seen a video of a light aircraft flying, powered by the 1UZ. It's a strange sound because you're used to hearing it in a car, but you instead hear the sound of the 1UZ mixed with the propeller, and see a plane.

JP7 has a flash point of 140 degrees. It's very hard to light, hence the TEB to start the engines. Leaking all over the ground isn't a big deal.

From what I can real the ground crews really got these engines singing. Putting out much more power than the Standard V8 . If you watch an SR71 being started you can hear these engines screaming. I bet there were some high performance parts involved. The green flame you can see when starting the engine was an explosive TEB liquid which was used to ignite the special fuel which had a very high ignition temperature because if the temperatures seen on the plane at cruising speed. A remarkable aircraft.

Cool? Of course. But, I had the privilege of riding in a sail plane piloted by my uncle Hilton in Hobbs NM. We were dragged aloft by a big V8 motor connected to a huge spool of wire. It was an amazing experience. We couldn’t outrun a bottle rocket, though.
