The reading I've done says the whole project is scheduled to take 5 years, but it will only be drained for about 2 of those years. You're surrounded by other lake and river resources. Others who have successful fishing channels sometimes drive for 2 hours to get to a fishing spot; seems to me you guys are spoiled! Who else besides you folks are in a position to document the progress of the lake's overhaul and rebirth? I'd love to see you take on that project! I'm 71 years old, and if they could lay me up for 5 years to rejuvenate me to the way I was 50 years ago, I'd sign up instantly, and give up junk food if I had to! The way I see it, your kids will get to see Lake Conway being reborn, instead of watching it die forever 15 or so years from now when the dam failed. It's probably a good bet that the long-term impact on your property value will be to your benefit, also.
@COLE_and_JAY8 ай бұрын
At the public meetings we attended. They said dry 5 years plus however long it takes to fill and then it will take several years for fish populations to rebound after stocking before they are really worth fishing for. So 8-10 years is what I feel we are looking at before things return to ‘normal.’ We do have a lot of other places we fish and we routinely travel to create content. It’s not rare that we find ourselves in each corner of the state at some point each week. We cherish this lake. It’s why we bought a house here and is substantially a better fishery than any of the other lakes within an hour from here in our opinion. We obviously don’t mind traveling outside of that to fish, but are just really disappointed that we aren’t going to be able to use this resource and take out kids out on it for a large chunk of time. We are pro renovation but against complete water/ fish removal because they are not the problem and everything that is of concern can be tended to without a complete drawdown. It sucks.
@phillipjohnson9158 ай бұрын
Not sure how to take your comment, friend! But as one fisherman to another, and a staunch conservationist advocate, we both know down deep that completely draining Lake Conway is absolutely not the only (or right) answer to rejuvenating Lake Conway. I’ve observed, and praised the amazing successes of other lakes rerouting the water flow while at the same time rebuilding areas of needed rehabilitation. Yeah, I’ve seen many miles of water flowing through the valleys, under the bridges, to the lakes and oceans and huge successes in various ways of reconstructed engineering work in order to create better fisheries and water quality. Never have I witnessed what I’m seeing Lake Conway! So far as the individuals that produce this KZbin channel, and that you’re so wanting and willing to break down their spirit for the outdoors, come on friend, lay off the demeaning insults. They chose their home front very well with a very bright future for in place for their family to flourish. Certainly it doesn’t mean they’re taking their blessing for granted or they are any less appreciative than you or I! Let me tell you, I wish sometimes I had something like what they have back in my younger days, because, driving 2 hours plus gets old but I love to fish and I have to drive it as long as my disability ssc will allow me.

They bought a house on a lake. Do I really need to say anything else? The number of people that paid much more for their house because it is on a lake will have to wait 5 damn years? I can not imagine the level of stupidity in the room that thinks its okay to close a lake for 5 years, kill all the fish and wildlife in and around it. Probably and as st..id as your comment.

I wouldn't move. I read the history of the lake and it was contested from the start. To make the lake better, maybe there's a way to influence the re-population and re-planting of the lake. I see that as being something you two could throw yourself into that would help the lake and have a hand in the process. What a legacy to leave behind when you look back and say, "We did make the lake better."

As a kid, the local lake I grew up fishing was drained. So I can sympathize. The worse part was they didn't have the money or a plan to fix it. So it set dry for almost 10 yrs. I honestly thought the day would never come when I would see the lake with water again. But with the help of a ton of fundraising, I eventually got to see the lake come back to life. Deeper, better, with bigger fish, and more improved. Now I get the opportunity to take my kids there. I still got the memories of the old lake, and what it meant to me. As well as all new ones. And that will never be taken away.

I feel your frustration! I live in Northeast Louisiana and was raised my entire life about 200 yards from a 3000 acre cypress tupelo tree lake. In 2016 the dam road washed out. Then local government found problems with the spillway. So after about 2 years trying to get money to make repairs. Well here we are in 2023 and still the lake is empty. We possibly will get our lake filled back up this winter. Then the fish restocking and growing of the fish will be 3 more years. One of the most frustrating things I see about your lake is loosing the large flathead catfish ya'll have. Those fish take a long time to grow.'

Cole and Jay, two of my favorite people, one of my greatest concerns is that big developers are going to attempt to take over the area. The argument that they will use is that developing the area will bring more revenue to the state and county. So glad that you will still be here for us. Perhaps, if you could find an endangered species, you could have the draining process stopped. One can only hope.

The only positive I could see in that is if their property holds or increases in value so they could sell and move to an equally good or potentially better spot. Even to another state. I worry that their property value will tank after this. There is potential for it to increase 2 fold if they’re able to hold onto it while living somewhere else. He talks about alligators a lot. I think they should move down to southern Louisiana somewhere. They’d love it and it’s not too far away for them to drive back to Arkansas to see friends and family and check on their house.

Wait to see what happens to the water birds once this happens. I lived in a neighborhood that had an earthen dam that was leaking. The fish died obviously once the water was drained the ducks ate them and were injured neurologically. They no longer were able to hold their heads up and the all eventually drowned in what water remained. My advice to you both is to start buying land around the lake. Once this project is completed you'll see developers showing up to buy land to sell to home builders. It would not surprise me to find out that a group of wealthy developers are behind this to begin with!

overcrowding with people crowding into areas that are wildlife habitat. The typical tragedy with developers who don't give a shit about the environment. They want to "improve' the lake usually means screwing it up with man's idea of what "improvement" means. No doubt money is part of the deal, but when money is involved ethics fly out the window. I cannot understand how things like this happen, and people are not included in the decision. I'm surprised that there aren't massive protests from people in that area to stop this.

Please be very pro-active, gather petitions from all the other lakeside property holders, and build a team to STOP THIS MADNESS. YOU CAN DO IT, AND MUST BEGIN DOING IT TODAY. speak to your Governor, and all other officials, an let them know how lake property owners, local fishermen, and companies that depend on the lake for income FEEL ABOUT THIS PLAN. Jay and Cole, I have been following you for the almost two years I have been the Grampa Day Care provider for Pippa. I understand your feelings about losing use of your lake. That has happened twice to me. Although I gave never lived on a lake, I was forced to find a different location for my Lake Darling Adventure Day. I was a Physical Educator before I retired. I was Head Administrator for my 6th Grade Adventure day. We had 125 (more or less) kids participating in various actives including hiking, biking,fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, art in nature, music in nature, and almost anything related to nature. This activity has lasted over 20 years and more than 8 years since I retired. I am so humbled by the fact that the school has kept it going after my retirement. It is a huge event. But, let’s get to my point. It was hard to do without the lakes when they were drained and “fixed”. However, both lakes have better facilities and fishing since the draining. Also, both lakes were found to have Native American relics that were unknown to exist. The water quality of both lakes also improved. But, I live in Iowa. Iowa farmers are known for spreading chemicals that pollute the water. Hog operations are known for draining pig shit into the lakes. And a new thing for me is the appearance of PFAS, the forever chemical which is carcinogenic. I remember as a child never hearing about this, fishing and eating a lot of fish with my family. I am so pissed that I have to be very careful as to what fish I can eat. I am 71 years old and anything done now will not have effects until after I am dead. Please check this out. If I am correct, this is in your field of education. Make sure that the fish your children catch when they are 70, can be eaten,without any physical effects. I’ve said enough. I look forward to seeing more episodes with the two of you and your kids. And, if you are ever in Iowa look me up. I love fishing but am not very good at it. Tim

That is so painful to hear that gut-wrenching news. Why don't they dredge out sections of the lakes over time without emptying it out completely? The proposed plan will be devastating the entire matured fish population along with all other wildlife. A five year time span to complete their total renovation is totally unacceptable because the people who probably coordinated this plan don't live or fish on that lake and don't care how effect residents, anglers, and most importantly the wildlife. I hope they come up with a different plan which will be less devastating to the wildlife and a lot more expeditious. There is no mention of relocating any of the wildlife which is the saddest part. There really needs to be a better way to help prevent all this death and heartbreak! I am so sorry Cole and Jay, I cannot imagine your pain.😥

Dang that sucks guys. I just googled it out of curiosity and read the first article I seen. It goes straight into interviews they done with you guys. I kind of teared up for you Cole. I get it. I grew up visiting my mom in the summers in Indiana and she lived on a lake. I would spend all summer on the lake just me and my little sister fishing in a Jon boat as a kid and from the bank. It definitely brings back memories and I feel for you, bud.

Enjoy while you can and thanks for all the content from this beautiful lake. I’d rent a bobcat or borrow one and build my own damn from the top of your head in the video to the tree line on the right. That would still be a good size area. At least you will be able to find tons of lures in there. Like golf balls in a pond at the course.

Fight and adapt. Don’t ever give up your lifestyle and your profound family love. You’re a model for so many of us. 👏

I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. Seems like a long time. Do they plan to dig out more after the lake is emptied? Rehome any species? Spillway creation is major reason to do it. Have to read more. Sad event no matter the reason, but hope you folks have a voice in making it happen quicker.

You still have you’re whole future ahead of you and you have a captive audience waiting to see what’s next. I feel for ya guys my favorite lake has issues as well. I am 1/2 mile from Lake Mission Viejo and back in 2013 we had our 1st golden algae outbreak and it killed all the fish. I mean all the fish, 15lb, 18lb bass all floating. The lake record is a little over 19 lbs. The water is still there it's just toxic to fish. That was the year I finished converting my 15 foot bass tracker Jon boat into more of a real bass boat with 2 decks. They did stock trout for a few years but they could only really survive for a few weeks before their gills were full of algae and they could no longer breathe. So yeah your childhood, your adulthood lake when the water/fish are gone it can hurt your soul... Wish they wouldn't drain your lake, good wishes to you guys.

@srchristopher60409 ай бұрын
@@cathysmith9026 it’s extremely heartbreaking for me. Hopefully God will fill it back up as quick as they drain it, plus it’s super hot, and we need rain. 8lb bass, 50lb turtles, snakes, American bullfrogs, lizards, some of the best birdwatching, as well( I don’t bird watch) but I have great respect the amazing birds that call the “Spring Valley Marsh” home. They are losing there home, as they know it. Animals that thrived, will die. Because the state thinks it needs to be done. This is not the way it works for me. Im very seriously upset. It is sad they're draining the lake, but being the optimist that I am I look forward to your new adventures. God doesn't close one door without closing another. Treasure all the memories you have from this lake and give thanks for all the blessings you have had. Then look ahead to what is yet to come. This is not the end - it's just the beginning of a new chapter. Yes, it's stressful to deal with the unknowns, but you have so much talent and so many adventures yet to come I am confident you will be healthy, happy, and thrilled with the new place you will have made for yourself. Chin up, hang in there, and know that God isn't done with you yet, and neither are your subscribers and supporters! It's gonna be okay, and you're going to be fine.

Yea, but there goes raising the young'uns on the lake. The property values just cut in half. The home has just lost half of the value of the property. I don't know how a small group of a-holes can do this. The people that live on the lake should have a say in the matter and I don't know of anyone living on a lake that want to wait 10 to 20 years to enjoy the lake right outside their backdoor. Someone needs to compensate them for their loss.

C&J so sorry to hear the news from you about Lake Conway. I know what it's like to lose a favorable fishing spot. I am living in the Ozzrks now and have found my favorite lake in Pomme de Terree near the Lightfoot area. Several houses there for sale near the lake and not sure, but I don't think catching muskie in Conway is possible. Give the Missouri Ozarks a though. Wouldn't be that far from where you are.
