I believe that the GDQ fake goal will go down as one of the defining moments of SMM - Like mecha bowzilla or 7 trolly pieces. Experiencing it for the first time is a revelation to the creativity and ingenuity of these creators, and to what is possible in this game. If it wasn't clear already, we are well and truly in the 'X=9' era of SMM2. Must mean SMM3 is just around the corner, right? Right...?

@@tzarg X=9 was a glitch where objects placed on the 9th column of a map would behave differently than anywhere else. That, along with the black hole glitch, defined the era at the end of SMM1 where glitches and hacks went wild. 7 trolly pieces was a paradigm shifting troll level that showed how troll levels could be more than just clever ways to kill the player.

It is hacking. The first flagpole is actually a Goomba. They edited the save file to change the object ID from Goomba to Flagpole. When Mario walks away from it, the goomba despawn and the “win” is canceled. However he remains locked in the animation and dies. You can see it despawns when the castle disappears.

It’s a goomba that they changed the data of with mods. There’s no checks for flagpole limits, because obviously you aren’t even meant to be able to place/remove them. So it’s just a perfectly valid level to upload.

Save file editing and a glitch were involved in the ending troll. There was a detached claw goomba that thought it was inside of a claw where the troll flagpole was. They then edited the goomba to turn it into a flagpole. They did this so that the flag would despawn after you got far enough away from the offscreen claw. This is how they made it possible for you to die after "beating the level." The Banned Wagon Team have a creators commentary where they cover this. To my knowledge, this is how they did it. Also they probably were using emulator to build the level so they would need a modded switch to actually upload the thing to the SMM2 servers.

i just checked on the level viewer and there where actually not 2 but 3 flags, that can be noticed as the level thumbnail shows the flag with a box made of tracks, with arrows pointing at it, but on the end we do not see it, because that end cannot be reached, the actual end that dgr got was actually in the sub level

​@@Syranovæ They could have let everyone have fun by creating a "troll/glitched" tag the removes the level from all the ways of accessing it without going to the Creator's page or inputting the level code. Then create harsh penalties for anyone who doesn't correctly tag their own levels. Most people hate getting troll levels (glitched or not) in endless and most troll players quite enjoy the glitches. I would wager that the content creators who play troll levels help keep people playing and create lots of sales. The constant punishment of these groups has resulted in level creators and content creators to leave the game.

To answer the edit: It's a goomba that was edited using hexadecimal to change it into a flagpole block. It creates a working flagpole and castle. If Mario walks into the castle door or is stopped for a second then the edited goomba ends the level normally, otherwise Mario keeps walking. Unlike the normal flagpole, an edited flagpole doesn't set the trigger to end the level if Mario is off screen, so pits still cause a respawn at checkpoint. The fake flagpole does set immunity to crushing (softlock), enemies (if you forfe them to fall after the flagpole is touched.. tricky set up), and to damaging terrain (spikes/lava). Edit: If you download the level, do not load it in the editor as it breaks the goomba/flagpole glitch and/or will crash Mario Maker.
