52 year old bowler here. I've been through Rubber, Plastic, Urethane, Reactive Resin, Proactive...full roller, conventional grip, fingertip grip, thumbless...wood lanes, plastic lanes, wood pins, plastic pins...Doesn't surprise me that this is where bowling is headed. In my life, I've seen a ton of changes in bowling. Didn't think they would end now.

I hurt my arm at around 38 years old and switched to the two hand grip. My average went from 204 to 219 within a year, It was much easier on my body. Don't know where people think it's harder on the body. Everyone thought it was a fad and said belmo wouldn't win much on tour. I drove 5 hours to watch him at us open in 2009. His power on the pins was insane. I told my wife then if he learns to control that he will dominate the tour. He pretty much has.

I think the Urethane statistic is mute until we know how many urethane balls there were and how many reactive balls there were. Because if you want a urethane ball you either get the Purple Hammer or the Pitch Black, but with reactive there are WAY more options. Until we know the totality of the numbers of each ball all this tells us is that the Purple Hammer is the best Urethane ball.
@nevinkinzel
@nevinkinzel Жыл бұрын
@therightlane This is the part you're missing about this statistic. What your stats show is that urethane balls are a key part of bowler's arsenal and that there are 2-3 key balls in the urethane category. Reactive still gets used but there are more options so no one ball is as dominant as those couple of urethane.

By giving two handed bowlers the possibilty to get a "tradional" ball reaction (urethane) whenever its needed makes it inevitable to start bowling 2 handed if you want to become competitive in the future. This development became present as short patterns were used frequently at championships - especially in Europe. There were times when bowlers competed with 30 year old balls which were plugged at least three times to be competitive on these type of patterns. The USBC as well as the ETB(F) made some horrible decisions in the past which led to several problems. The consequences of those decisions unintentionally favored two handed bowerls as players were forced to either use urethane, loft or increase speed by a lot. I really appreciate the two handed style but I have been really upset by the decision made in the past which ultimately penalized tradional bowlers. In the early 2000s there were also some high rev bowlers which often had some disadvantages because of their high rev rate like Robert Smith, Ken Simard, Rudy Kasimakis which made them reduce their rev rate by using the so called sarge easter grip. Just as in any sport where a technique proves to be too good or advantageous; I think there will be new rules against two-handed bowling as well, as it was never intended to be thrown with two hands really from the beginning. And many players using two handed styles are not doing it because they where limited to that style, they're doing it because of seeing Belmonte's success. It is a hype, but as someone said, many of these two handed bowlers except for a few, are throwing in a bone-breaking way that will cause damage to their body over time.
@coopergates9680
@coopergates9680 Жыл бұрын
They were never intended to be thrown with three holes from the start, either (it was thumb and middle finger only). Yes, rules change in very silly ways, such as restricting players from balance holes to improve symmetrical ball performance so they will buy an asym, or reducing versatility by insisting that all holes must be used on every shot with the same hand and the ball can't be turned 180 to use the holes backwards.

@SuburbAllied
@SuburbAllied 10 ай бұрын
@@Reclaimer77My points are many, but one of them is the limit of the game itself. You are not allowed to do certain moves in basket ball due to the games limits, so is the same for bowling. To keep the score down in bowling, where the technology that goes into these bowling balls today is on it's limit is very hard, unless you start to consider certain other options. You could imagine the hustle if you where to change the properties of the lanes itself, eg making them longer or wider or changing the number of pins for instance. It would then be much easier and cost-effective to simply ban certain ways a bowler can throw a ball, eg two handed style, if that would keep scores down and ban Urethane (certain materials used in the coverstock). Sure, some will be hurt in the process, but you should also remember that many chooses to use that style, not because they're restricted to it due to physical reasons.

If you look at the history of bowling balls, urethane had the shortest time in history as the main shell to use. It only had a 10 to 12 year run from the early 80's to the early 90's. That is not a lot when you think about how long the game has been around. All for urethane being back in the game. How many players want to play over the left gutter cap for their career. Also how long can you really enjoy the game itself bowling two handed. Maybe mid to late 20's for most. I believe that if the game has a real future the traditional style and strategies should be taught so people can enjoy the game their whole life rather then not physically be able to do it when they get older.

Another reason that urethane won't continue its upward trend is that it's generally bad for ball sales. Urethane doesn't really go bad like reactive balls do. Once you have a urethane ball, it doesn't soak in oil to the point of obsolescence like reactive does. This is bad for ball sales, and I imagine tournaments will eventually heavily discourage the use of urethane by changing the oil patters to help out the ball manufacturers (at least if the PBA or USBS doesn't just outright ban the modern urethane balls). 2 handed is likely to continue the trend, unless people somehow find a way to make higher rev rates a disadvantage, which I think is really unlikely. It would be bad to completely discourage a massive group of young bowlers just over a personal dislike of 2 handed bowling.

The only reason two handed bowling is dominant is because of the easy wet/dry patterns everyone is playing on nowadays. Even the pros have way more oil in the middle of the lane and that’s what makes two handed, 20 mph, 500 rpm bowling relevant. These patterns were illegal during the heyday of bowling, just ask Ray Orf or Glenn Allison. Put out a flat shot, 1 to 1 ratio, 40 feet down and you will see two handed bowling go away in a hurry. When bowlers that were averaging 235 on these formerly illegal patterns start throwing ten or twelve gutterballs in a set and struggling to break 400, then you’ll see this hack bowling style go away and people will have to start being shotmakers once again.

@@bgale14 There is not a 1to 1, gutter to gutter shot anywhere in the world today. If there was, so-called 230 average bowlers would be shooting 140 and crying their eyes out. It used to be pretty much all you would ever see until the introduction of urethane balls. Then the ball manufacturers and the crybabies who couldn’t hit their mark got their way. Tilted patterns allowed hack bowlers to miss their mark two or more boards either way and still hit the pocket. Bowling has been on a downslide ever since.The notable exception was the US Open, where the lanes were drier in the middle and more heavily oiled on the outside, creating an out of bounds area outside of the second arrow and the most difficult oil pattern in all of bowling. Todays two handers and big crankers would die on a pattern like that.

I'm probably the only person in all of the bowling youth who dislikes two handed bowling. I just don't get the appeal. I've tried it before and it just doesnt feel right. I don't understand why you need to do it to hook it more either, I'm a one handed bowler and I can hook a spare ball, which isn't even meant to hook, perfectly fine into the one three or brooklyn pocket from the right side of the lane. I just don't get it. I suppose it's easier, but it's getting to the point where I find watching PBA tournaments with two handers boring, as, aside from the left handers, who i do enjoy watching, they are literally all just carbon copies of Belmonte with their approach. I do find right handers hooking their balls to the right side entertaining though, but one handers can easily do that aswell by turning their body to the right at the end of their crosslane approach and rotating their arm to the right. Infact, that's usually what I do to pick up the 10 pin or similar leaves, as watching it ride the left rail for ten seconds and then hook into the ten pin too funny not to do. Probably shouldn't have posted a massive rant that nobody will ever see anyways on a bowling video for no reason, but eh.

Girls don't benefit from 2 handed as much as boys do. Because of their breasts it's hard for the supporting arm to reach the ball during the backswing. This forces them to either reduce their backswing or twist their spine a lot more than male bowlers have to. Depending on what they choose it either makes it harder to generate ballspeed and rev-rate or introduces a lot more movement in their upper body which can be an additional source for errors.

Bowl a sport short tournament in NJ on anything short, and 1/2 the ball you see on the ball returns, or more, are those purple hammers. For my no thumb game I can't project reactive down the lanes. The reactive balls are just too strong for many tournament conditions. I don't have a purple hammer (well, I had one, once). But I have a Blue Tank, Blue Hammer, Natural, Super Natural, Carbide Tank. So lots of non-reactive options. Want to force people away from urethane - that's simple. More oil volume. Put down 50 foot patterns. Or maybe companies should develop reactive balls for high friction environments. They really don't. Lower end reactive balls are designed for beginner bowlers, not sport short. And then there are some high friction houses, where 48 feet on them plays like what 38 feet should be. With the rev rates the way, they are. High friction houses. Short oil conditions. Lanes breaking down in tournaments after 1 - 2 games. What else are people supposed to do? Maybe 30 years later we'll look back at the reactive era (at least for competitive bowling), sort of like we do not for the first urethane era.

I don't see two handed bowling taking over. We'll see how many of these juniors make it to the PBA. Two handed bowling is less consistent, and harder to manage, given the aggressive footwork required, and high revs don't mean you're necessarily good. It's not rev rate and speed alone that wins, it's the guy who can play the entire lane and be skilled enough to change his ball reaction at will. Idk, but two handed bowling is just another trend to me. Regardles, you still have to compete with them, I don't mind facing a two hander in match play, I'm just saying it's never going to be the majority.

The explanation is a simple one. Bowlers who started at a young age, are simply not strong enough to get under a ball and throw with any hook. Traditionally, the path to learning would be several years of learning to throw accurate straight shots, but now young bowlers can start hooking the ball right away. Creating for a much exciting, and efficient learning experience. The only hope for one handed bowling to remain relevant is that this game has a lot of people who start at an older age, although even those people can adopt two handed. Add to the facts now that the 3rd generation of two hands are coming in with lower ref rates, would suggest, that people are beginning to learn how to control axis tilt this way, (which used to be an advantage for 1 handers) If we can start learning how to control referee with two hands, the one-handed technique may very well become obsolete within 30 years

Kids going to 2H makes total sense. Ever seen a young kid try to throw 1H? The ball is too big for them, so it’s easier throw 2H. Now that 2H is an acceptable release, kids aren’t weened away from it as they grow up, so more stick with it. The numbers of 2H will go up as more youth age out into adult competition. The Purple Hammer being the top ball makes sense. It’s by far and away the best urethane ball on the market, and there are what... only half a dozen urethane balls available currently. If there were on 10 reactive son the market, and 1 of them was clearly better... that ball would be on top of the list.

2 handers create high revs BUT they throw urethane to tone the reaction down? Seems silly if thats the reason for bowling 2 handed. Whats the point of 500 revs with a ball that doesn’t take advantage of that?

@@BowlingNDrums Exactly what they said about resin first time around. If the "2 hand revolution" is coming, scores are going to take a giant leap up again (like they did with resin and then with the improvements in core design) and then you either bring the pace down or finish killing the game because everyone averaging 220-230 is not going to be fun for long.

Don't like that 2-handed bowling is taking over. I have my reasons and will not debate them here. However, I will say that I don't think they will be as prevalent on the senior tour. Bowling 2-handed is harder on the body and I just don't see these guys' bodies being able to do that at 60, 70.
@SirJoelsuf1

That's...not a bad thing. Some of the best athletes of all time in sports outside of bowling have a de facto "expiration" date. Michael Jordan, one of the best basketball players of all time, couldn't do what he could in the 90s at 45. How about Ichiro Suzuki, one of the best baseball players of all time? Was he able to do what he could do in the 2000s when he was pushing 50? What about Wayne Gretzky, one of the best hockey players of all time? That's right, he retired BEFORE he reached his fifth decade of life. Tom Brady, easily one of football's best quarterbacks despite the controversy surrounding him, is approaching 50 and will likely retire soon. If we want bowling to be popular like other sports, its best figureheads NEED an expiration date. When people see a 65+ year old Walter Ray still winning outside of the senior tour, they won't take bowling seriously.

The PBA just banned wrist braces but allow two hand chuckers. It only makes sense if the PBA is desperate for relevance today without a thought about tomorrow. If you are a young kid with weak wrists, they are telling you to switch to two hand chucking... Once everyone is a two hand chucker, they will start to regulate balls to death, and spend billions on oil and patterns to try and turn two hand chuckers into real bowlers with normal results. Eventually bowling will be 90-95% two handers, all using the same ball, on lanes so specifically crafted to eliminate success variety, bowling will become a parade of lemmings mega boring to watch & impossible to care about. The back up spare ball was inevitable, too. Why would you not take advantage of the cheating you are already doing? What a joke...
