I think the amazing thing is that most of the album was written before age 15. But she knew it needed a hit single. So she wrote this over the weekend after reading the book to get it right. Hi, I wanted to thank you for listening to the different types of music with an open mind. Kate Bush is unfortunately not well known, but Stranger Things managed to popularize one of her songs to the larger audience that would probably never find her without it. That is cool. If you are interested in a less known, but great music, I suggest listening to some Ayreon songs. It's a Dutch music project with loads of singers (their live concerts have cca 15+ singers) and instrumentalists. Ayreon and other projects by a Dutch songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen are a combination of rock, metal, folk and electronica. Their live concert from the last year (Beneath the Waves) is one of the more unique concerts in the recent years. You could start with "The Day the World Breaks Down, from Beneath the Waves 2023", but all songs are great, no fillers, so it doesn't really matter which one you would pick.

Hi and thanks for this really interesting and very enjoyable reaction video. This song is really the point at which the wider world was first introduced to a real life, actual genius. For those of us who were there it is sometimes hard to remember that there was time BK - before Kate - but there was and this song was the moment when she just seemed to arrive, fully formed on earth as if coming from another realm (Patti Smith did once refer to her as a UFO after all). Her vocals for this song were done on a single take during the recording of 'The Kick Inside.' Morris Pert who was responsible for quite a bit of the percussion during these sessions, including "Wuthering Heights" said that at the end of recording the musicians all went to the local pub to talk about what they had just heard her do and they were all convinced that she would either be a complete flop or else start a revolution; as it turned out it was to be a revolution. John Kelly who was the sound engineer for this album and who worked on albums from a wide of range of people all the way from The Damned, to The Beautiful South, and Tori Amos, recalled that he came to the conclusion that even though The Kick Inside was his first big job he had already peaked. The record label wanted 'James and the Cold Gun' as the first single, Kate Bush insisted that it had to be Wuthering Heights, eventually the company gave in - but as a senior Exec stated later it was only because they were convince that Wuthering Heights would be a flop and the experience of having such a flop would teach her a lesson and remind her that they knew better than she did. Things turned out rather differently. Glad to hear you are going to go through 'TKI'. It is a really beautiful album and a great album for a debut. Do watch out for 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' and take careful note of the lyrics, keeping in mind that she wrote that song when she was 13 (she recorded it when she was 16 with the help of David Gilmour). Watch out too for the title track and again pay close attention to the lyrics - inspired what is known as a child murder folk song, 'The Ballad of Lucy Wan' it is a song about incest, pregnancy, and suicide, written on the form of a suicide note. Thanks again. That was really enjoyable indeed.

You might need your therapist on speed dial for this one, but it usually makes for an amusing reaction video!
@leslieturner82763 ай бұрын
It was a very nice reaction and review of an iconic song. There's just a slight clarification I need to mention, Kate wrote "Wuthering Heights" quite late, although the idea for the song had been rolling around in her head for a while. On the album "The Kick Inside," there are two songs that were taken the professional studio recordings of three songs selected from Kate's extensive collection of already written songs by David Gilmour, who also paid for the studio time, session musicians and the production. Now, one of those two songs recorded when Kate was 16. She wrote the lyrics for when she was 13 years old. David thinks that was the song that convinced EMI to sign Kate. Of course, I'm not going to reveal which song it is on the album. BTW, the "Red Dress" version of the music video led directly to a worldwide celebration of "Wuthering Heights" held on (or close to Kate's birthday) called "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" people gather togrther wearing red dresses to dance along (using the same dance movements) to Wuthering Heights. I also have some prepared notes on "Wuthering Heights," which I add below: ============ A while before Wuthering Heights was written, a younger Kate managed to catch the tail end of a BBC adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights when the ghostly Cathy was outside a window of Heathcliff's house wanting to be let in. Kate shares the same birthday as Emily Bronte, and when she was young she was referred to as cathy. In order to get a feel for Cathy Kate read part of the book, interestingly when she did get round to reading all of it after finishing writing the song, Kate noticed certain phrases from parts that she hadn't initially read had ended up in the Lyrics anyway. Kate said that when she sang this song, she was Cathy, she was channelling the character. Kate's vocal performance is a single take with no edits. Interestingly, when Kate was a child she was called Cathy, and she has the same birthday, 30th July as the author of "Wuthering Heights" Emily Bronte Kate had to fight her record company to get Wuthering Heights to be her debut single, EMI had chosen a completely different track from her "The Kick Inside" album, in the end EMI released Wuthering Heights because they thought that it would fail and teach Kate a lesson, instead it became a worldwide smash hit. Hitting number 1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, and the UK. It was at least a top 10 (or better) in nine other countries. A single chart performance that would only be surpassed in 2022 by "Running Up That Hill".

Kate is often writing songs inspired by literature. The final song on THE KICK INSIDE (which is also the title track) is inspired by the Ballad of Lizzie Wan in which a brother and sister have an incestuous affair, she falls pregnant and he murders her to hide the crime of their relationship. Bush changes the narrative so that the woman is empowered to decide her own destiny in her own way. It's still tragic but it is, as you put it, quintessentially Kate. She does something similar with the 1989 title track off her album THE SENSUAL WORLD, taking inspiration from Molly Bloom's soliloquy in James Joyce' masterwork, Ulysses. Asked why so many of her songs are about other people, Kate insists that she does not feel that her own life is interesting enough to warrant being the subject of a song.

It is an interesting choice to review 'Hounds of Love' which is Kate at the zenith of her career and her greatest album to then rewind and listen to Kate on her first single. Her voice is very different from one to the other, she mellowed out to quite a degree by the time of Hounds, although her voice is still phenomenal. The kick inside will be an interesting listen for you, 'Moving' is a brilliant opening track and along with 'Wuthering Heights' you have the beautiful 'Man With The Child In His Eyes' and then 'James and The Cold Gun' and also 'Them Heavy People'. Personally I prefer her next album 'Lionheart' but it is all personal preference. To know that she wrote these songs at such a young age is testament to her staggering talent and I still think she is a massively underrated singer both in her own country and worldwide.

I don't think she's underrated in the UK. Remember a few years ago when she announced a limited tour. Every ticket was sold within an hour. I think she has a massive fanbase still.

I LOVE Kate Bush. You should check out the band Shakespears Sister and their eerie ballad “Stay”, a UK number one back in the early 90s which is due a resurgence anytime soon.

Just a note: You might want to check out Pat Benatar's cover (from 1980's "Crimes of Passion" album). And, then there's Kate's own remake for her 1986 compilation album, "The Whole Story." Pat's cover was actually my first experience with the song but I did see Kate's video (for the original recording) a few times on cable (USA Network ran a mostly-video series called "Night Flight" on Friday and Saturday late-night programming where they featured videos from a wide range of artists who had very limited commercial exposure on US radio).

Dear Peter, That was very respectful: you didn't interrupt; instead, your comments were written on the screen during the performance of the song. I really like that! Wuthering Heights: A ground-breaking song. Kate has never been interested in "playing it safe" by bowing to musical trends; she does her own thing. Now, some people really dislike her; but others - like me(!) think she's a genius. (I think she's the greatest singer-songwriter of all time - and yes: I recognise what a massive claim that is!) Let me put it this way: I've never met anyone who says, 'Kate Bush? Yeah, she was pretty good; wrote a few decent tunes... I think she's quite good - but no more than that.' You either love her music, or hate it! Thinking about your question, Peter... If it's a Kate Bush video: "Moments of Pleasure" - an incredibly moving, autobiographical song. (My favourite ever song of hers.) If it's by another artist: "Disco Lasers" by Ebony Buckle - an amazing, melodic, left-field song from an original, proggy/art pop singer-songwriter. The video is majestic! (You won't regret giving it a view.) Thanks for reading this. Very best wishes for your future success, Phil (new subscriber)

That guitar solo at the end is done by Ian Bairnson who played on all of the Alan Parsons Project albums. Now that is an act you should really get into both for the songwriting and as for the production. Their debut is probably their most unique one, Tales Of Mystery And Imagination: Edgar Allen Poe.

A male vocalist that did a fun version is Mike Mills from Toehider. He also sings in a.o. 'the day that the world breaks down' and 'everybody dies' by Ayreon. But it looks like you avoided that rabbit hole. Well, there is a lot of music out there that you will be sorry to have waited too long on listening to. Alas only 24 hours in a day.

Kates voice is very unique. Pat Benatar has covered it really well, her version is more rock oriented. I enjoy both🎉

I see you tied up with two of my favorites. Floor and Kate. Guys have covered it . . . Well, He sings it in her key, but Mike Mills, (Toe Hider) did this cover kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYDPkmScjKqVqassi=WpXyHPKQEtrPsd6q So add this to your listen list. Floor has done work with Mike Mills in the Ayreon Universe (something else you might be interested in. Arjen Lucasson writes magical prog and metal).

How can you analyse a studio recording? You should listen to a live performance. That's a mistake a lot of you "analists" make.
@peterarvidsonmusic3 ай бұрын
I would love to! My analysis is for the songwriting and production mainly, but it can encompass other things as I develop and practice.
@Scott-Lee-Snell-UK3 ай бұрын
It depends! A live performance is not always the best version of a song. It's sometimes a gamble between if a person is getting the best version of a song when they listen to a live or studio version. I mean yeah you may be getting to hear what their voice sounds like live, but it doesn't mean it's the best version to listen to. For example there's a live version of Kate Bush singing 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' on just piano, but the full version with the emotive haunting strings sounds much better than just the piano version. You're missing out if you only just hear the piano version. The studio version with the strings is what brings the track alive more, and gives it it's main emotion. Edit: And to add an extra thought. I love 'Wuthering Heights' , but I certainly without a doubt prefer this completed studio version version instead of any of the live versions.

@@peterarvidsonmusic Kate didn't do much live work (specifically touring) after her lighting technician, Bill Duffield fell through a stage trapdoor and died. She also said they were big, time consuming productions, as Kate is very 'hands on' (it's a wonder she wasn't collecting tickets at the door). She was no longer prepared for the commitment. Consequently, if you're restricted to live performances, you're going to miss out on so much. Having said that, "James And The Cold Gun" live, is insane.
