Kate was asked to write a song for the scene in the movie She's Having A Baby where the husband, played by Kevin Bacon, is reminiscing about all of the good times he and his wife, played by Elizabeth McGovern, in the hospital waiting room and he's feeling regret and fear after he learned that his wife is about to go through a breached birth which could pose a threat to the wife's life and even the baby. Kate wrote this song from the husband's point of view. Elizabeth McGovern's character and their baby both turn out OK. Kate's character survives at the end of the music video because of the nurse's smile to let the husband know his wife is OK. This is my favorite Kate Bush song. It has gotten me through tough times emotionally and gave me the encouragement and strength to carry on. So I give her a lot of gratitude for writing, producing and performing this touching and beautiful song.

As a life-long fan since I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in 1978, the only thing you can expect from Kate is the unexpected. Everything she does is unique, innovative, enigmatic, and magical. She is a one of a kind musical genius and certainly one of the greatest female artists of all time. She has never been in it for the fame or riches, it's all about the artistry and music for her. It was written for a small but incredible part where the husband finally recognized his regrets, embarrassment, helplessness as his wife’s labor goes wrong and it’s serious- he’s sent back to the waiting room alone to contemplate how in awe he is of her but how he becomes a man faced with potential loss. It has a happy ending- she captured the roller coaster during birth.

Fabulous analysis. This song was written and used for the John Hughes movie “She’s Having a Baby” and in the movie there is a happy ending. In the video I feel I think she left it more ambiguous. I’m sure there’s a clip from the movie floating around you tube somewhere if you want to check it out. Also you’ll probably hear about the Maxwell version of the song. The government soon arrests the scientist for his meddling with the laws of nature and proceeds to destroy his life's work. The scientist leaves it up to his son to complete the project they started together. Kate based the song off the 1973 book "A Book of Dreams" by Peter Reich, about his love for his father, a famous and controversial psychoanalyst, Wilhelm Reich, who's pioneering works was considered blasphemous in 1950s America. Thanks, once again, for reacting to my choice. In actual fact both mother and baby survive in She's Having A Baby, so I have always taken the end of the video to be a happy one, where the nurse tells the husband everything is OK. However, we Brits like ambiguity way more than Americans do (don't know about Canadians... please tell me where you stand on this), hence the deliberately open ending. As you have established, both the video and the song form a package as Kate weaves her spell. A good choice next would be Cloudbusting, which has an uplifting feel, in spite of a sad moment at one point. Always playing with the emotions, our Kate.

Nice reaction. The song didn’t resolve because the film scene it was written for had not resolved at the time the song ended. But it was a happy ending in the film with both mother and new born baby surviving. And it was also a happy ending in the music video as indicated by the nurse’s good news smile. Kate directed that video.

If you look closely at the ending scene, the nurse has a smile on her face as if she is delivering good news. Of course the husband has been clobbering himself for hours about all the things he should have said and did. When he gets the news that his wife is out of the woods, he's non-plussed. He hasn't prepared for that and so you see him go nearly limp. It's a very realistic portrayal by the actor of how emotionally torn he is without speaking a single line.

In Kate's own words this video is about a man that thinks of all the regrets he has if "she doesn't make it" as she collapses and thinking all of the things he should have said or done. There is no pregnancy or baby involved in this video at all. Yes, Kate wrote the song "This Woman's work" for the movie "She's having a baby" but this music video is not about that at all.

This always makes me sad. It can make me cry. I can't have children. Always wanted too. Sometimes that's just the way life works...but I know my husband has been in that place. Waiting outside my surgery door, scared for me when we were dating. And I remember that waking up from my first surgery I was asking for my mom and him. For my 2nd surgery a few weeks later, I was asking for just him. Him again when I woke from my 3rd a few weeks after. That one was weird. There was a surgeon resident in my room and monitoring me because my blood pressure wouldn't stabilize, it was jumping up and down violently. I had started my period mid-surgery, they had stopped it for surgery 1 and 2 using the Patch. So when we forgot that medication, it came back violently and the pain couldn't be controlled. They spent the entire day and night giving me shots every other hour of muscle relaxers and pain killers. Then they gave me a nurse and put me in a high doses of IV fentanyl, the nurse made sure I didn't stop breathing. Don't remember the entire day. But I woke up and I could handle it all again. Intestinal surgery hurts like s btch.

Not easy for me to name my three favourite songs. It’s almost a case of my favourite being whatever song I am listening to at the time. So many of her songs are different from anything else and contain something that can make you feel the song stands above anything else. Three of my more recent listens that are worthy of a reaction are ‘Rocket’s Tail’, ‘Moments of Pleasure’ and ‘Cloudbusting’. The first (from The Sensual World album) was not a single and does not have an official music video. But there is a nice compilation video from The Sensual World Of Kate Bush combining lyrics and a montage of photos and video clips.

it is indeed a fascinating masterpiece: musically, it has an emotional ebb & flow, the orchestral backing always chokes me up, yet, like your comparisons to things being “unfinished”, the song literally ends on a last hanging note before a completion chord note.. it leaves you w/a wanting for a “proper ending” (depending on your background/upbringing on this planet).. as for the video: Kate Bush is the director! aside from from post-editing, she “choreographed” the video so that it could be filmed in a “long shot” (of sorts) relying on the use of lighting & rightward movement: a continuous scene where she taps him into the past/present moment having dinner when she suddenly collapses backwards, he carries her to the car, a desperate race to the hospital, & his wife being wheeled away on a stretcher into the hospital ER as he races in behind her.. lyrically, you even read the shift from her (woman’s) work to switch the pronouns in the last verse suggesting the father now must take on “the work” w/“not a lot of time in ya yet”(paraphrasing).. it’s such an ingenious video/song for 1989.. & i agree, as a gay man, i feel a “relative” balance between emotions & suppression are fascinating for me when observing (listening/talking with) other humans.. thank you for another fantastic reaction/review! you asked of another song: of the same “The Sensual World” album, 1 of my next favorite songs of her is “A Deeper Understanding” which fascinatingly is way ahead of its time when using slow modems to communicate/etc w/others before there was an internet becomes an addiction by simply “pressing EXECUTE”! Your reaction amuses a bit. It has always struck me that the song's narrative depicts a man who is looking in at the woman's "work" - her literal battle for her life, or the life of her child, or both - and he is helpless. And all he can do is ask her to take care of him anyway "oh darling...make it go away". He is helpless. Other language in the song also taps into his need to have things fixed for him. He has relied on her protection, and he shows limited capacity to tap into strength of his own. Poor poor thing. All he needs is for her to fix it so he doesn't have to face his weakness and inattention.

I agree with you: We in Western society hate "cliff hangers". IMO anyone over 25 (even younger) gets that Life is beautiful but messy. Subconsciously we have to think there is a "happy ending" for when a challenge visit us, we must feel that we too can weather the storm like the "other" character/person did. I do not like the movie version, but this official video is amazingly dramatic and poignant. Very creative and thoughtful woman (human). Another beautiful, melancholy duet with Peter is 'Don't Give Up'. Through the eighties and so on people wanted to be the hero but those characters were uninteresting and people like Alan Rickman said the villains are more fun and due to social media and other cultures filtering in we got variety. Predictable is boring, cookie cutout is boring. Kate and Peter and so on are memorable for not being predictable or being formulaic. She's a real talent for sure.

There are two scenes with the nurse. In the first, in the mid-point of the song, the news she delivers is very sad- the perception being that she had died. But at the end of the song, the second time the nurse comes out, she keeps her hand on the man for a bit longer, and she has a smile on her face- suggesting that Kate had survived. And the man cannot express what he feels. It is this tension between the two outcomes that makes this song so poignant. It is a masterful song with a masterful video- very typical of a masterful artist. I view Kate as one of the greatest singers of all time and as an artist without peer.

Men can continue to do whatever we want, just as women do. I'm not aware there is a question about "what the role of men is now". The roles of men are not taken away by or dependent on what women do or want, any more than women feel that what they do or want is dependent on the roles of men. Men and women are both free to continue to participate in or fill the historical, current, and future roles that we choose and interest us. I think it would be sad for a man to feel a lack of purpose just because women are fulfilling their wants and needs. I also don't think women are worried about or questioning what roles are left for men now either. The role of "providing protection" was actually taken away from individual men and women by the global societal structures of police forces and militaries, making individuals as protectors illegal. It has nothing to do with the changing or evolving roles of women. Have loved this song and Cloudbusting and Running up That Hill since my young teen years in the 80's when these songs first came out. I'm happy to see recognition of her work continues today. Another enjoyable review! The Sensual World was released in 1989, but was Recorded from September 1987 - July 1989. So you are tech right anyway! And was recorded in her home studio, at her folks place in Kent -Welling where her childhood home is. This song as also in the hit film: She's Having a Baby with Kevin Bacon . My friend Fraser him and his family's GP was Kate's dad Robert Bush who worked South East London in Plumstead in Barth Road as you know. And we used to speak to him loads when he finished work or when we was in Kent in Bexleyheath,Welling, Dartford, on our bikes- He some times gave us a lift back to Kent from Plumstead-Such a nice man! + some times said hello to Hannah as well as Kate etc Memories I wil always cherish.
