Leopoldpark, also known as “den hof” by the locals, is a beautiful nineteenth-century park in Ostend, Belgium. It features numerous artworks and was designed by the German landscape architect Louis Fuchs. The park follows the model of an English-style park, complete with bridges, walking paths, and flower beds. It covers an area of approximately 5 hectares and was partially laid out over the old city walls of Ostend, as well as partly on military grounds123.
Here are some interesting facts about Leopoldpark:
The park was initiated in 1861 and completed in 1870.
In 1859, two water sources were discovered within the park.
The music kiosk, which still stands today, dates back to 1885.
The renowned floral clock, installed in the park in 1933, has a diameter of nine meters and is planted annually with over 30,000 flowers.
The bronze clock above the floral clock is the oldest component, originating from more than 250 years ago. It originally came from the ‘Peperbusse,’ the only remaining tower of the Saint Peter’s Church that was nearly completely destroyed by fire in 1896.
Leopoldpark serves as a green oasis in the city center, allowing walkers to enjoy the tranquility of nature. It’s a wonderful place to relax and appreciate the surroundings!
