The markus has the armrests waaay to low and unadjustable but i dont find the Mirra's arm rests to be usable and i end up leaning too close to the monitor, (yes i think its not just the chair but the overall ergonomics) the Markus length of back rest just suits me far better than the Mirra. I had a Herman Miller Aeron for probably 15 years. I’m now about 4 or 5 years into a Herman Miller Embody. Man, it’s like there’s no chair there at all. It’s like I float. Kids, there’s an old saying. Spend your money on the things that connect you to the ground. That’s your bed, your shoes, your chair, and your tires. That advice has served me well for many, many years. Ignore that at your peril. Lastly, loved the Ifixit bit. Had a very Crazy Eddie vibe. Herman Miller Aeron sitter here. Over the years (5 or so), the mesh on the front edge of the seat has started to fray from all the sliding and twitching I do. It's not at the point where it's lost any support, but I expect I'll have to be replacing it in a couple years. This is an easy DIY project - there aren't any screwdriver heads that you won't be able to drive with a bit from a hardware store, and the construction of the seat is straightforward enough that you won't need to search for blueprints. It will require the proper shape of mesh, but that's about it. In general, if you're a hardwood floor owner, you'll want to invest into hardwood floor casters, which are just your regular soft rollerblade wheel mounted in a caster rig. I had this rolling on engineered wood floors for years, and there aren't any dents or depressions in the finish. BUT, wood floors that feature a layer of plywood on top (like engineered wood) may crack in places where there are air pockets in the plywood layer. Also, mesh seat is very nice because you can blow a fan through it. All swamp-ass sufferers here will appreciate.

You know, I've been sitting in a wheelchair for 22 years now, and I've never understood all this elaborate crap they put in office chairs when wheelchair surfaces are literally just a piece of cloth stretched between two metal rods, and most people who use them have some spinal damage - myself included - that makes seating comfort all the more important for them, so I thought all of these office chair features are basically just snake oil. This was THE video that convinced me I should give one of these a go. Thanks!
@pkbeast4 жыл бұрын
That has blown my mind. Not that I see wheelchairs on a daily basis or anything, but every single one I do see is exactly as you describe, a piece of cloth between two rods. Why the hell don't wheelchairs have these ergonomic features built in? I understand cost would be a big factor but I would have thought they'd be a bit more prevalent, haven't seen even one.
@dominic.h.33634 жыл бұрын
@@pkbeast Yea, and that's the exact reason why I've been thinking if I'm good to sit in one for hours on end, I don't need all these features an office chair has... but the thing is, I do not sit still in a wheelchair the entire time, I move around, and even so my back starts hurting after a couple hours, which I've always blamed on the actual condition I'm having, instead of the comfort of the chair. Now I'll try such an office chair to find out how much longer I can sit in one without having to lay down a bit to recover from all the strain.

I've warehoused and built hundreds if not thousands of commercial office chairs over the last couple years, so here are some of my amateur chair person (?) thoughts. 1. Mesh seat pans are overrated, they tear and stretch worse than leather. 2. The price/quality ratio is a bell curve. The higher-end budget chairs are better than the entry-level mid tier. Don't go over $400, don't go under $800. 3. Adjustable and locking head and lumbar support > support pillows. 4. Standard barrel-pin casters are cheap and easy to replace. 5. NOTE FOR JAY: Commercial office suppliers can order big and tall chairs with extra caster prongs, wider seat and back pans, heavier materials, etc.

@João M. Most of the complaints are probably from people who could not afford it. I will only buy Herman Miller chairs. There are two reasons: comfort and warranty. I had a HM chair for 10 years. The back would no longer stay up. I took it to the HM dealer. The HM dealer called me two days later and said come in and choose a new chair. HM chose to not repair the chair and to just give me a brand new chair. I now have a new chair with a 12 year warranty. About 4 years into, one of the armrest 'rivets' broke. I brought it in and they repaired it, tuned the chair up and had it ready in 4 days. I will not buy a cheap chair again. Jay is right. There is a reason why they are premium chairs. They are built for comfort and longevity.

João M. Amazon reviews (for United States at least) are very very good for Herman Miller chairs. Besides, Herman Miller is the best of the best in terms of support and comfort. Since we only have one body/one back and damage both every time we spend hours in a chair, I think the cost is definitely worth the safety (plus the cost of later issues that back problems will bring could be hundreds of times more expensive).

As a fellow 'Jay-sized' individual (6'5", 110kg), thanks for making this! A good desk chair is so under appreciated - I've been lucky in that the last couple places I worked actually took this stuff seriously and ordered me new desk chairs as I was a bit tall for the stuff they had lying around too, but I remember the cheap desk chairs I had at uni used to kill my back!

As a similarly 'Jay-sized' individual (6'3", 85kg) I agree with the back ache from standard chairs so much! My crappy, cheap, eBay chair is so comfortable for my shortages family and friends but after about 20 minutes my back starts aching, feels like it pinches on a nerve or something below my left shoulder blade and it has no head support, so the back ends like just below my shoulders and upwards of that it's all on me. Tall people need to do more chair reviews.
@BrockGrimes4 жыл бұрын
Most of those cheap chairs you'll find only have a spine bar to support the back (up the middle) and not a full width support (side to side). Check out seat construction you'll see what I mean. For taller guys it's really hitting you low on the spine.

At around 6'5" and 260lbs, really appreciate this kind of content. I struggled for years to find a chair that fit me and was affordable. I have a Chachi Ergonomic full mesh chair that I paid £160 /$215 for 2 1/2 years ago (msrp £395/$530 but usually sells for £200/$270 most places). Rated 24hr for up to 280 lbs. Only real problems I have are that the spring for the back is a little looser than I'd like, feels like you're going to fall back if you lean and the headrest occasionally falls down if I lean my head on it in the wrong place. Otherwise great for sitting at work all day then, when done, playing games for the evening.

As someone with a *very* similar bodytype to Jay's, the *IKEA Markus* was the perfect chair for me. The headrest is exactly where my head is, the support is placed just right and the armrests are at the correct level, even if the chair lacks adjustability. The only downside is that the thin leather cover on the headrest eventually broke after 3 years, because it is genuinely paper thin. The result is purely visual damage to the chair. Otherwise it is perfectly fine after a good 5 years or more.

At 6'5" and 120-130kg, I used an Ikea Markus for the longest time too. It's been relegated to a backup now. My only issue with the chair, considering its dirt cheap, is the shape metal bars supporting the armrests. They are so far towards the front of the seat, that it prevents me from siting with my legs wide apart if I'd want to. Other than that over the years it's kept up very well. The only wear on it is the lover back of it has some fack letter and not mesh, and that fake leather has been torn apart by belts I always wear on my jeans. Currently I sit in a Titan from Neatforseat.com - it's a "gaming" kinda a chair. But it not a stupid racing chair. It looks just like any big office chair.

Pretty much anything Herman Miller is fantastic for long term sitting at a desk, I got a used Aeron dirt cheap on Craigslist, did some TLC and it still feels like the newer ones at the office, and that was 5 years ago and still going strong Replaced the seat and arm rests (thanks cat) and I'm thankful I can still find individual replacement parts for this chair instead of throwing it all out
@JasonVanPatten4 жыл бұрын
I don't even remember how old my Aeron is; I've had it that long. The piston is finally starting to go and I'm a fairly light guy (165lbs). It's just age. The rest of the chair is perfect. And fortunately, replacing the piston is neither expensive nor difficult. I work from home and am at my desk for long stretches of time; typically do 10-12 hour days. A good, supportive office chair is a must for that kind of sitting. Ergonomics being the annoying thing they are, I have a recommendation for those of us who are on the shorter side (like me) - chuck the arm rests. Get them right off the chair. Throw them away. They're going to hurt your shoulders in the long term because you probably can't lower the rests enough to keep your arms at 90* bends. Likely, if you're short and have arm rests on your chair, you're hunching your shoulders ever so slightly. Don't. Do. That. Get rid of the arm rests and get really snuggly with your desk. Rest your arms there.

We have Steel Case Think Chairs at work. They're great when they're new. But I'd put them in the 3-5 year category. After that the mesh isn't nearly as supportive. The gas spring on a lot of them has worn out and the sink to the bottom of their stroke. We've had a lot of them reconditioned and cleaned a few times. A number of them have also been replaced. This is an an office space environment where chairs are going to be passed around and abused quite a bit more than a personal office setup. I bought the Ergo Chair 2 for home. I think the Think Chairs were around $850 a piece when the company first got them. Considering the price difference I'm pretty happy with what the Ergo 2 offers so far.

I ended up going with one of their Highback chairs. For two days after work, I would take a book with me and set my cell-phone to a 15 minute timer. Then I just sat in each chair they had for 15 minutes while reading. For me, the Highback rated 3rd in comfort level, but it rated 1st in lack of discomfort (yes, those are two different things). There were two Waterfall models that were more comfortable, but I discovered that they would put pressure on my thighs if I sat on them for too long. Which is really odd, because the seats on the Waterfall models are specifically designed to not put pressure on your thighs; I think my weight was the issue. My point being, while my chair doesn't have much adjustable, it's still a decent chair and it fits my body size really well. But, I took the time to try different chairs to see what would fit me. Shoot, I even tried one of those gamer-chairs about a year later, and like Jay said, those chairs suck.

I bought an assembled Hyken Mesh Task chair several years ago at Staples because I got it on sale. No other chair has been able to tempt me away from it. I can't remember if it was 150 or 200 but for the price it cannot be beat. Fully mesh and strong as hell. I've been as much as 290 to now 250 and it's held up. I'm 6' and it seems to be built for this size. The nice to have would be rotating and sliding adjustment of the arm rests, but my arms don't touch the rests when I'm actually gaming. The head rest is adequate, and the only thing I've replaced is the casters with rollerblade style so it rolls better on carpet.

When we are out of lockdown, I'd suggest looking into second hand office furniture. You might be able to pick up a decent chair for a fraction of the price.

That's how I got my Steelcase Amia for $25 Canadian, so like $18 bucks US$ Big corporations seem to blow out very lightly used chairs all the time so there are crazy deals to be found.
@BenWolkWeiss4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. That will be the unfortunate side effect of this pandemic. There will probably be lots of office and restaurant equipment available on the second hand market. I bought a lightly used Steelcase Think chair about 8 years ago for $100 and it's still going strong. One of the most comfortable chairs that I've ever sat in. The seat cushion foam is almost worn out though and will need to be replaced soon. However that is considering I worked from home for 5 years and sat on that chair for nearly 10-12 hours a day between work and gaming. The chair is made to have parts easily replaced and also recycled at the end of it's life.

Holy crap. Those are some very nice deals. I've had to pay 515 Euro for a 7 year old (and well specced) Herman Miller Mirra 1, though it was refurbished a little. It feels quite new to me. But still, 500+ Euro seems reasonable to me.
@kadajawi65674 жыл бұрын
Btw. I had a Giroflex Syntop from the early 90s... when the spring collapsed, the chair was something like 22 years old. Some plastic parts don't look as nice anymore, but the cushions are fine, the mechanics are mostly fine. Quality chairs can last a long time.

This is a real question: Why don't the amazon links actually take me to the product? It always takes me tot he home page. Weird.

I was lucky and got a free chair from my boss. He had a promotional deal with X chair and had too many of them around the office. I was asking my supervisor about the chairs and where i could buy them and the company president just happened to be walking by and overheard the conversion. Then he said just to take any that you fancy home. Picked the X-CHAIR X2 EXECUTIVE TASK CHAIR and have been happy since.

Steelcase Leap V2 is the most comfortable chair I have sat on. Ive worked at a few Tech offices and have tried them all. The leap is the only 24 hour chair for me. I am 5’5” and weigh 150 with lower back problems and this is the only chair where I don’t feel any pain after prolonged use. Does a nice job of hugging your ass while providing superb lumbar support.

I'm in the same boat. Was looking to replace my current chair that has seen better days. The ErgoChair kept coming up in my feed. The price point looked great, but Jay's review (and a few others) have turned me off. I was also looking at refurbished Aerons because they "seem" like a deal. If you go that route, be very careful with who you buy it from. I found 2 sites that looked legit, but did a BBB check on them. Let's just say you don't want to do business with those companies.

Great video, Jay. I've had many gamer chairs in 25+ years. All have suffered from the same problem, their wheels. Even my $800 COUGAR TERMINATOR had the same problem. When I assembled this chair, I didn't install its wheels. Instead, I used a set of LIFELONG brand wheels, AMAZON, of course. They are single, not double, wheel casters. The wheels are 3", made of polyurethane, and weigh 8.10 oz. They are made using thick gauge steel frames. To me, they are the perfect mod for a gamer chair.

Great long term review - thanks. Just wish that one of the higher-end manufacturers would have a model with flip up arms. As a musician in the studio this is a must-have and cheap gamer chairs are killingmy butt....

Gotta admit, my $60 amazon mesh chair has held on pretty good for a few years. Also, pvc pipe mod over the shock always helps. I'm not exactly a lightweight, either.
@nathanmartinez54864 жыл бұрын
What is the PVC pipe mod? Could you link your chair please?
@sefferrr4 жыл бұрын
Nathan Martinez he probably means putting a piece of pvc around the shock so it doesn’t sag... after awhile the shock will give especially if you’re a giant

Do it! I know they ask for a lot for a chair. Even I thought so too, but I purchased a Steelcase Gesture a while back and smile every time I sit in it. The way it just constantly hugs my spine is extremely comfortable and the amount of adjustment it provides keeps you not wanting to move around or take breaks and just focus on the work at hand. I wish everyone would have a decent ergonomic chair, it's an amazing experience. If only if I could find someone who can spoon me as well as this chair, my life would be complete.
@Tephnos4 жыл бұрын
Funny you mentioned the Gesture, because I recently sold it after a couple of years because I've never come across a chair that had such an aggressive lumbar, and it would just cause pain every time I wanted to recline in the thing.
