Some people will grab at just about any instance to excuse their parents' crappy behavior. Compelling children to watch doordarshan isn't an example of great parenting. To be fair neither is giving them cable. In most cases though, witholding cable (unless they can't afford it) is yet another way to keep their children in line and control them beyond what's required. Cable helped me broaden my horizons and shaped the person I am more than the people around me. It was a blessing. The focus should be on ensuring kids watch the right thing; not on witholding it entirely.
