This is an excellent instructional video on why not to piss off Tyson or you'll end up with a black eye.

I can't do 3rd drop shot consistently (more often get into the net), so I drive the 3rd, then drop the 5th. I just do it blindly because I found it easier for me to move forward to the net. Finally, you did this video with detailed explanations of why we do that. I am so happy to find this video. Thank you so much.

I used to drive every 3rd shot but you won't beat the higher players doing that all the time. Learn the 3rd shot drop. It just takes practice.

The drive is a far easier shot and the 3rd drop is an essential shot to have in your arsenal when you start to play competitive pickleball… it took me 4 months to get the 3rd shot drop consistently but it’s needed.

@tyson so if my 3rd shot drop is good, would I drive it at the fourth? Or I should drive at the third and drop at the fourth?

I really like your hierarchy list. Thanks! I've recently been mixing in a 3rd drive esp when the return is short and bounces high.

❌ The only drive lesson one would ever need is one that actually demonstrates proper drive mechanics. You skipped the "how" and went straight to "when" and "why".

Good call about the evolution of the game, seeing more of the tennis pros bringing their aggressive third shot drive mentality, setting up the 5th shot drop option. Solid, as always Tyson.

While at the baseline for your third, what factors do you consider when deciding to drive vs drop? Ball height from the bounce of the return?

Watch where your opponents are at, if they’re already at the kitchen then you drop it, and work your way up the kitchen. If the opponents are way back, I’ll drive it to keep them back and give me time to get to the kitchen.

Mostly if I’m balanced and how well my opponents handle pace. I like my drive so if I’m balanced and the ball is sitting up, I usually drive. Always drop if you’re off balance.

At 4.0/4.5 level. I master my soft 3rd shot drop. I am hitting like 80% of them unattackable when I am balanced. Around 10% attackable and around 10% missed hits. Because of this, I stay away from driving the ball on my 3rd shot which is my strength before. I barely drive nowadays except for the short and flat returns but even with those I find that my drives are weak and easy to deal with. With the sport getting aggressive like you guys are saying. Should I work on my drives again? Please advise.
@jjabbas9790
@jjabbas9790 Жыл бұрын
I play at the same level and I would say yes, you need to be driving the ball. Don't force it, but when a ball is short and high, you absolutely should be driving it. When you're pushed back deep you can do what you're most comfortable with. But if your drops are locked in, why not add more variety to your game? Makes you harder to play against.
@josephparisi6723
@josephparisi6723 Жыл бұрын
100% should be adding a solid drive to your game. Most people play a lot better when there isn’t a threat of a BIG drive coming their way. I find it really easy to deal with the 4.5s that can’t create from the back half of the court.
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball
@TysonMcGuffinPickleball Жыл бұрын
It’s important to have both options and know when to use each one as you progress. That way you could drive more when opponents struggle with pace or are slow getting in off the return, but drop more when you need to be more patient and work the point.
