I've acquired cars for people a few years now, My advice: If you're considering condition over price, the Desert SW is hands down the best. Especially, the high desert. NM, AZ, WEST TX, NV get very little moisture. Also, if you are looking for a manual transmission, there seems to be more in NM than anywhere else.

Indeed, as a car salesman in NM, we dont have rust problems, like you have to try hard to make your car rusty here. Though There are some 'salty' areas, Taos for example during winter etc. But by and large, NM is a decent state to buy cars in. Decent low tax, 4%, gas can still be had for 1.80 here, and insurance isn't to bad. Pay about 100/month full coverage for my lease. And less than 80 for full coverage on my 03 bmw z3

Am from Albuquerque, NM let me tell you that taxes are less that's true but cars in general are expensive in comparison to El paso,Texas I went to buy a 2020 Mustang Gt performance package before the covid-19 it was around 47k now you get 2017-18 for that price on the other hand I went to El paso,Texas and found the same car for 40k, Am telling you tried getting my 16 year old son a Silverado truck 07-10 couldn't get anything cheaper than 12k and that's a 10-13 year old trucks in the other hand I went to Lubbock,Texas found them for 6-8k so I don't agree that New Mexico is cheaper.

I live in iowa. I’ve seen cars as young as 2013 with visible rust around the wheel wells. Finding an older car (90-05) is pretty rare. We have extremely hot and humid summers and very harsh winters. My area had the roads re salted every 7-10 days. All year round, with the only exception being one month of fall, our cars are being eaten alive by salt and humidity. I daily drive a 93 dodge caravan that my dad gave me that I’ve modded a little bit with a turbo and I fixed a lot of the rust. I get more looks than a brand new sports or muscle car, it’s exceedingly less common.

There's a reason there are people that take their trucks and trailers to Florida, buy enough cars to fill up their trailer, and come home and flip them. Here no rust is a premium and there no rust is expected. A $6k used car here is like $3500 or so there.

When looking at a used vehicle, remember that all accidents aren't reported. Check panel gaps, look under the hood and under the trunk liner for signs of a collision repair. Tape lines, welds that aren't from the factory. Undercoating or seam sealer covering repairs is common. If you're not sure what to look for, you can pay certain shops a small fee to inspect it for you. Also check the fluids before starting the vehicle. Make sure the engine is cold. If the engine is warm, it might have a problem and it might have been warmed up so it runs better when you arrive. Check around the engine, transmission, and under the vehicle for signs of leaks. Check the suspension for rust, dents, new parts, signs of something rubbing, and also for moisture which can mean a bad strut. I know it's a long post, and I still left out a lot, but it might help.

Being a fellow American born and raised in Chicago, IL sharing this country with so many regions of people I just assume other people understand the idealisms of being in a wintery climate from seeing snow, to experiencing salt on the roads, to cars getting rusty over time, and knowing how to manage driving in snowy conditions... during that time of year of course. It just always blows me away when people, AMERICAN PEOPLE speak so obliviously about snowy/icy winter life. Having never seen snow, doesn't know what it's like to drive on ice/snow, has no idea about the rust from salt... I mean I understand, it's just mind blowing to me! We live in the same country!!! But like I said, I understand... I have also never been through a desert and have never seen a wild alligator or scorpion, nor have I ever been to a bayou. So... we're even.

Sun damage should be taken into account also. Those Southwest states you listed as being great for used cars can have a negative effect on premature rubber seals, hoses and interior wear. I bought a used Honda in Oregon that was a transplant from Arizona. I had to replace all hoses (including the vacuum), belts and the window seals were leaking. Oregon, by the way, has low DMV fees and no sales taxes to worry about. The rust is minimal except on the coast and the central part of the state is very dry.

I knew it was going to be Florida. Every car I've ever bought was used, V8 2 Door, rear wheel drive for $3000-5000

The (alphabetical) map of the “northeast” had me dying! I must add, though, that Kentucky ain’t the south. It’s above the Mason-Dixon Line and was never “officially” a confederate state. They do have a sh¡tload of nice looking used trucks and way more rebel flags flying than necessary. Also, according to your logic, Tennessee would be the best place to buy a used first generation Saturn, no?

I love the Iowa plug with only trucks. I drove from Michigan to Iowa to buy my Alfa, the dealer (Van Horn) had some of the largest new and used Alfa inventory and priced really well. I only have 2 Alfa dealers near me now (1 closed the Ann Arbor location, which sucked...) And out of the 2 only 1 is a sole Alfa/Fiat dealer which I trust more than the FCA dealers (Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep)

I've been looking for a used car for about the last month now here in Maryland. It's insane how the documentation fees range is different for each state! I've seen from $245 to about $900. That's a big gap. It should just be a standard fixed cost.
