When The Verve produced this music I was going through excruciating pivotal changes in my life. I remember seeing them live on this tour... their music helped me face and embrace the painful emotions rather than running away from them. The alchemy of their powerful lyrics and music ushered me through that time, and I've felt stronger and more at peace for the journey with their soundtrack in my soul. Much gratitude!!

Verve changed my whole approach to guitar. McCabe is a genius of effects, melody, tone and atmosphere. Saw them in '93 in NYC and in Philly in '97 sadly Nick had left the band at that point. They had to hire another guitar player and a lap steel player along with a keyboardist to replace him. Sounded shite and performance was uninspired. Played NOTHING from Storm in Heaven (still listen to this day) and only a few classics. A shame. To be clear I LOVE Urban Hymns, Northern Soul, and Forth. Sonicly ASiH was a game changer IMO. Finally, I recommend listening to ASiH on shrooms or LSD.

@theyearoftherat

Me too (well, he was a big part in a long list of many others that showed me I resonated more with texture). I still remember hearing A Storm in Heaven in 93 and I during Star Sail I was hearing sounds I always wanted to hear and had no idea how to get it. My mastering engineer has told me he couldn't even count the number of bands he's done work for that were inspired by ASiH. In my book, irregardless of what Nick says (which his pride in it is likely so in his role in saving it - rightfully so I suppose), Urban Hymns was Richard's first solo record backed by Verve. Sadly, the more time that went on they by and large left the experimental stuff like A Storm in Heaven behind as Richard began to take over. Nick has said at one point he, Si, and Peter have kicked around the idea of doing something instrumental (this is after Black Submarine went into limbo) - which for me, who thinks Richard often didn't know when to shut up on the mic, the prospect of them doing something instrumental would be monumental.
