@@BuildMontage how does this compare to the Formovie Theater in contrast and HDR pop?
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
It's not an apple for apples comparison. Different form factor. The brightness/contrast uniformity is better but that has to do with being able to project straight ahead instead of from a sharp angle. Both are great projectors - the Formovie has other features like Dolby Vision - and it does look insanely good for a UST. Not saying the JMGO is better, just another option - we are very spoilt for choice these days!

I have ordered one, the waiting now begins :) We have an LG Dled 65GX downstairs and 80% of the time we watch tv during the night and more or less only movies and series. So I thought what the heck, lets try it out. Will be ordering a 95" motorized tab-tension ReAct screen which I will build in a "box" to have a stealth setup Have been looking at the formovie theatre but that is twice the price(considering the kickstarter price) to get here in Sweden.

Is this better in your mind than an UST like Formovie? Obviously there are trade offs in terms of placement but otherwise…?
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
It's a difficult question to answer because I think your use case plays a huge role in the decision making process. The Formovie is excellent for a UST. This N1 Ultra is awesome if you wanted to ceiling mount or have it on a stand. The N1 Ultra has better brightness and focus uniformity - because it's a standard throw vs ultra short throw. The tech is getting so good now and the price is coming down so again, depends what you want to achieve.

I'd like to see a test, how close you could place it in front of a wall and projecting the picture really steep vertically on this wall. How is the projector handling it, when you try to make kind of 'ultra short distance beamer' of it.
@BuildMontage

This definitely doesnt work. It distorts the image and also the throw ratio means that the picture is tiny and it can't focus.

Do we have any projector screen size calculator which have specs already for this projector.. or what would be the ratio? I just would like to measure if my room is big enough to get 150" picture out of it. Thanks!
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
I don't think it would have the focus ability for 150". This is just my opinion and I could be wrong. The ratio is 1.2:1 so you could work it out from that - multiply the screen width (not diagonal) with the ratio of 1.2 and that will tell you how far back it needs to be.

But if you pay 25.000$ for a projector you have a dedicated room with a real soundsystem and in it the JVC destroys the JMGO. How does this compare to the Vava Chroma in practice? It's hard to believe the 4000 lumen claim considering a lot of generic brands exaggerate and then backpedal after release. Can you test the actual light output?
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
OK so it's not really appropriate to compare it with a UST - it's a standard throw projector, so better focus and brightnes uniformity, especially in the corners of the screen. I should have included my readings from the calibration since I've been asked so many times - I didn't read the lumens output, but I did get 135 nits off the .9 gain screen which does indicate that it is a very bright light source. This was after calibration as well so it did lose a few nits but the image was corrected. To give you a comparison, my Epson (which is considered a bright projector) gives me about 75 nits. So, while there is marketing hype around numbers, I still think it's a bright light source no doubt.

Thanks for the review; how does the projector behave with 24P movies? Does it always convert to 60P? 24P Videos are smooth or do you notice stutter or other glitches?
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
It was super smooth. From my player it was showing that it was playing in 24p natively - but I haven't confirmed with JMGO if it does do variable refresh rates - to my eye it felt like it was displaying a native 24p refresh - so it was very smooth in my eye - the demos should give you a good indication of that. If it wasn't I would have expected more jutter from my camera which usually happens when it's at 60hz vs 24 - My videos are filmed in 24p.

@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t compare it to a TV period. Different use case, different experience, certainly the image quality is great but an oled TV can beat out a 200K dollar projector so it’s really unfair to try to compare. You need to weigh up the pros and cons of both and decide which suits your use case the best. The review is the review and I do it in such a way so you can see how it performs without any bias or comparisons. I know that’s not likely the answer you wanted but you need to ask yourself what are you after, big screen? Awesome black levels? Portability? Day time viewing? Cinematic viewing? Etc etc

@BuildMontage

There wasn't too much to say. I wasn't able to get any where near 110% of BT2020, but that is the same for projectors much more expensive, but I didn't share all of that in this video because in past videos where I share calibration information, usually that's where I'll see a big drop off in the video where people click away - so I tried a slightly different approach and try to show the projector with example videos, to give people a good idea of how it looks. Colour accuracy is really only relevant when you calibrate with a sensor. If you are worried about that but have no way to do that, I think you would be wasting your time wondering about it. This projector HAS colour correction tools built in so you can use a sensor and calibrate it to have a very cinematic image. I don't know how it compares to every model so I just try to show each projector in the best possible way so people can make up their own minds.

@BuildMontage

No because it's a different use case, different technology. It's not a fair comparison because it doesn't have the challenge a UST has of pushing an image up onto a wall at an acute angle - it can push it straight ahead, but then you need to find a place to mount it. Image wise they are similar but the Formovie has the Dolby Vision engine built in and also the brightness uniformity on the JMGO appears better - because its not a UST - it's a real trade off. Watch my Formovie video to see what i think of it.

I am going to reward you and your great review with all the questions that were triggered from watching it (lucky you!) 1A. I have never participated in a purchase from a kickstarter campaign. Although i've learned that many of these products start out selling this way, Im a bit uneasy about my first experience. Anything I should be concerned about? 1. What triple laser projector currently on the market would compare to the image quality/brighness of this one. I was currently deciding between the Formovie Theater and the AWOL LTV-3500. 2. What I dont see is a projector calculator to tell me what is the range of the lens. It appears to be fixed at one ratio. What distance would the projector have to be from the screen to get a 80", 100" and 120" diagonal image. Thanks. 3. 3D usually works best with a higher lumens projector. How good is the 3D mode on this projector. Does is use DLP-Link technology for the glasses. 4. Although this is advertised as a 4000 lumens projector, there is a foot note that says that the CVIA lumens measures at 2200. I could not find information on what CVIA means. I thought ANSI was the overriding standard for light measurement. Also have you tested the light output with a meter. If so what were your results. I know ....many questions. Thanks.
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce - I'll answer what I can: 1a) I can't answer that for you - risk must be assessed your end - however JMGO have a proven history delivering on kickstarter - and it's a real product (as you can see from my video) so the risks in my opinion are low. 1) I don't think its fair to compare this to a UST - they are used in different ways and each have strengths and weaknesses more to do with the form factor. I would use the N1 as a standard projector in a dedicated room vs the Formovie which is better in an ambient light situation as a UST. 2) You can use the throw ratio of 1.2:1 which means you multiply the screen width by 1.2 and that's how far it needs to be for a minimum throw distance. I don't have any further information on that I'm sorry - possibly send JMGO a msg. 3) 3D is untested - I didn't get any of the glasses with them - but currently only supports local sources of playback (blue ray player etc) 4) I didn't measure the light engine, I measured the nits off the screen which is a measurement I rely on more. I got 135 nits off a .9 gain 100" screen. Which is VERY bright. My JVC NP5 in HDR produces 111 nits but on 120" - so I would say that the N1 Ultra is very bright regardless of whether it's 4000 lumens or 4 billion lumens - I tested it after calibration with my sensor at 135 nits. Hope this helps.

Dear Tony; I'm sorry for asking about this PJ a long time after you've reviewed it, but do you believe this can be a REAL HT projector? I currently have the Epson 5040ub and want to upgrade to a solid state PJ, first my choice was the BenQ 4550/W4000, but after reading reviews I kind of gave up because of low contrast and not so good black levels. I've read a lot about the N1 Ultra and it really seems ok, but I still wonder if it is a REAL HT projector and not only a "lifestyle portable" one. I worry mostly about contrast and black levels, although there has been complaints also about speckle and light bleed on the lens. Thanks for the review! I know it’s advertised as 4000 ANSI lumens but is that actually true? Have you measured the output? The reason I ask is an image at 4000 ansi lumens should be highly visible during the day and this looked washed out. Plus companies tend to lie about this.

I measured 135 nits coming off my .9 gain clr screen. The image downstairs, I had a LOT of light in the room - I didn’t film at night, it was around midday and I have huge windows in an open plan. Also the lens I was using to film is f1.7 and I didn’t raise it when I was recording from the previous evening so the image was a little over exposed but I was on a deadline so I had to use the footage. So yes, probably one of the brightest projectors I’ve used but still I would recommend in a light controlled room. If you want to use a projector with ambient light, go for a UST.

Is this 4k 60hz or 4k 120hz? I have a PS5 and really hope they put the 4k 120hz capability. The projector 📽️ is awesome looking from your review but I fear it’s 4k 60hz refresh rate. Please tell me I’m wrong.

I couldn't find any indication that it's 4K 120hz, only HDMI 2.1 with a single EARC connection. From what I can see it's 4K 60hz.

It's getting pricier with time. I regret I learned about it now and not when the 1099 or 1199 batch was available.

Yes it was a special price but it was very popular and sold very quickly.

Is it true 4K or emulated?
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
True4K is also pixel shifting. The "proper" 4K is called native 4K - which this is not - it does use pixel shifting technology but the resolution reproduction is incredible. The technology has come a long way. I have a JVC NP5 native 4K and while it's a lot better, it's also more than 10 times the cost and for what it is and the price... the N1 ultra is pretty great in my book.

@@redaizo appreciate it! I'm just trying to help - there's lots of misinformation out there and it can get confusing.. I review a lot of projectors and this is the first triple laser standard throw I have reviewed - the tech has come a LONG way - all the 3 laser projectors so far have been UST projectors.

Please share calibrations. Save the rest of us some time.

@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
I dont have them any longer, also though more importantly, my calibration settings will not help you as it's more to do with the screen, light output and also every laser is different - so its not necessarily going to give you a good result. You need to calibrate yourself with a sensor.

How so? Not paid, not a sponsored video, and pumped two weeks into it. Maybe you can explain to me how it’s an ad? I’m genuinely wanting to know.

Hi Build Montage, it’s the way you described the product and particularly the speakers, it really felt like an add to me when you said that the two ten watts speakers sounded incredible for the size… and overall just the way you were presenting it didn’t feel verry objective. I really don’t want to offend you, i hope you have a good day Build Montage.

@@thor8334 I was just reading the specs. I didn’t say they sounded incredible, and I said that I don’t recommend using the built in speakers but to use and external sound system to get better experience. But I appreciate that’s how you interpreted it - not sure how else I could have presented the information. I’m an audio guy so I never recommend built in speakers but had to list them to be thorough. No offence taken, I was genuinely wanting to know because this wasn’t a paid advertisement.
