What's great about this is it shows an integration of an EV with public transportation. Here in America, we are so concerned with range anxiety because regional or even local public transportation isn't widespread. With places like this, you don't need an EV with a 400 mile range and the heavy battery pack that comes with it. You can have a 200 mile range with a much lighter pack and higher efficiency overall.
@FuncleChuck

Yes. “Range Anxiety” is another symptom of our absolute failure as a nation to provide transit. The US is one of the worst developed nations on earth for freedom and opportunity because we can’t travel without a wildly expensive personal car.

@@FuncleChuckNational transit (aside from airplanes) is only a failure due to lack of demand due to widespread ownership of personal cars and cheap energy... You can't will something to exist even with a bazillion tax dollars if the people don't generally want it in any significant numbers. Have you taken Greyhound or Amtrak? Unless you have someone picking you up on the other end it's a pain in the ass. Americans, in general, drive or fly then rent a car to drive wherever they're going.

This comment reminds me of road trip where I did something that most would consider unthinkable and used an Electrify America 350 kW stall as a park-and-ride destination charger. The issue is that the next driving segment was going to traverse 175 miles with 4000 feet of net elevation gain, passing by zero chargers along the way, so I wanted all the range buffer I could get. But, my car is a Bolt, and charging a Bolt from 10% to 100% takes far longer than I am willing to spend sitting around at a big box store when I don't need to buy anything. What I wanted to do was go explore the city center while the car was charging, but the only chargers in the city center were level 2's, and charging that much on level 2 would take far too much time. So, while planning the trip from my home computer, I researched the city's transit system and discovered a rapid bus that runs every 10 minutes, that just happened to go straight from the Electrify America to downtown. So, I plugged into the EA and went straight to the bus stop, rode the bus downtown, explored the downtown for an hour (which was about right), then rode the bus back to the car to continue the trip. I arrived back to a car pulling 10 kW, right as it ticked from 99% to 100%. I unplugged immediately and went on my way.

At the 5:00 mark, the 1 MWh per year number can't be right. My home rooftop installation produces about 13 MWh per year. Based on some overhead photos I've found of the site, it looks roughly big enough to be a 1 MW installation, which would produce about 1500 MWh per year in my area--maybe more like 1200 MWh in Germany.

This type of charging park seems like a great idea for Airports in the US. When bidirectional charging gets built into the majority of EV’s, could use them for grid support and give the owners that agree to ‘buffer’ the grid free charging to NET add a predetermined # of kWh during their stay.

My local airport has a mix of ~20 J, CCS, and Tesla chargers in their short-term hourly garage (>$25 max per day with you towed in a week, and like $5 for an hour) that are free charging they’re always full. The long term lot has none The offsite lot HAD ~40 free AC spots and took them out. They put in a DC charger instead (and only let you don’t have enough range to get home)

Charging at airports also works great when combined with valet parking, as it allows even a small number of chargers to service a large number of cars, since valet staff can unplug and move cars immediately after they finish charging. Even if too many EVs arrive to fully charge all of them, the valet staff can still prioritize the cars that arrive with the lowest battery level and unplug cars at 60% or 80% to get the maximum benefit out of a limited resource. Of coarse, for anybody that lives in a city and has home charging, the airport should be close enough to you that charging the car at the airport itself is unnecessary.

The employee parking garage for Mercedes R&D Sindelfingen, P307, actually beats this one. It offers 283 plugs at Chargepoint AC chargers that can deliver up to 22kW a plug (experiments for load shifting are running in some garages). The other garages in Sindelfingen also have chargers, namely 231, 126, 97 and 94 plugs. Now normally I wouldn't count a company's parking garage but all the chargers are publicly accessible and support roaming in addition to a chargepoint account. Some have cables, some don't. You should come check it out next time you're in town. You'll be hard pressed to find a spot during the day!

While on my last work trip, I parked at a metro parking garage in Washington, DC. To park it was $7; to charge it was a lot per Kw, and there were fees if you parked longer than 30 minutes. Not to mention, to get into the DC government buildings area, it took 1 hour, so not a single car was using the charging mid-day on a Thursday. Lots of these charging locations seem like a good idea. However, they are so piss poor executed both by governments and private operators, along with the still high price of an electric vehicle and increased insurance, all while inflation from poor government policies and printing money for wars were not part of. It has people looking to get more life from an older gas car.

Destination charging is extremely important. I didn't know how much so until I arrived at my destination at about 20% knowing my car would sit there at that low SoC. I was surprised to find a 6kW charge point charger, so I plugged in and left it there for about 5 hours. Came back and the car was back up to just under 80% and the whole session is about $.90 which is amazing. I love that because it means I can leave sentry mode on and not have to worry about anything :)

The new SAE J3400 NACS standard calls on us to go to the European style of Level 2 where you bring your own cable. It’s possible because NACS latches on the Vehicle side like Type 2 does. I think it’s a good thing for reliability. Any theft or vandalism is limited to harming only one driver rather than taking down the charger for everyone until it gets fixed.

Now most of them are as expensive as DC rapid charging and seem to average 60-90p per kwh. When Tesla are 40-50p at superchargers, and overnight home charging is 7.5p kwh it means that we never destination charge unless we desperately need to. It is the difference between paying £5.50 to fill up at home or £55 to fill up away from home (or £30 at Tesla).we are off to meet relatives tomorrow. I've googled the destination and the car is charging to 95% tonight. We should be fine even with an extra half hour side trip.

My first reaction was that I thought it's lame that the charging points are all only AC and not DC. But then I realized it is a park-and-ride at a train station. So by definition, your car will be sitting there for hours, or perhaps even days. You don't need high current. It's actually a smart idea. why doesn't every airport park-and-ride have these already?

Let me add some context. Manny in Germany live on the countryside and they would arrive by car and take the train for the last kilometers to enter Stuttgart for work. That’s much faster than taking the car all the way. There are also fastchargers nearby. There is a study that showed that due to preconditioning Teslas that have often been fast charged show no larger battery aging than Teslas that have never or rarely been fast charged

A subject I brought up was to also consider power generation and storage. No one in either area involved was thinking about those 2 pieces of this big puzzle. My ideal site would have solar canopy, to a charger that has both battery storage and grid tied supply.

I‘m totally agreeing with you regarding the attached cables also as a German driver. Those chargers are available also with attached cable but this makes it more expensive for the CPO in terms of invest but also following costs for maintenance and repairs. As Germans are not so much willing to pay for service I understand the decision of CPOs to go for chargers with no attached cables eventually though personally I don’t prefer it like that.

It's already allmost impossible to make a profit on a AC charger. The installation and just the monthly fee is quite steep and it will be many years before you se anything at all. Ad to that some charger going down and needs a manual reset on site. Just every second month and profit gone. To also having to inspect the Ac cable (with is required by law if you follow the rules) would make it impossible. To draw customer to your bussines yes, as point of profit, nope.

I really like the idea of destination charging at park and rides. For the suburban commuter, it's functionally equivalent to having charging available at all of the numerous destinations the buses and trains serving the park and ride go to, but much simpler and easier to construct, since the charging is consolidated to a few parking lots, with these parking lots out in the suburbs, where there is much less constraints around parking spaces and utility conduits than in the city itself. It should be a basic expectation that every commuter parking lot - particularly the large ones - have charging available. And I say this even for U.S. cities where driving is the norm and the commuter parking lots are served by buses, rather than rail. 250 chargers may be overkill for a place like suburban Houston. But, if such a park and ride has bus service, it must clearly have *some* usage to justify it, and with the cost of running a single bus for a single day roughly equivalent to that of putting in a few level 2's, there is really no excuse for any commuter park and ride lot to not have any EV charging in it, whatsoever. I'll also mention that the ultimate goal of public level 2 charging is not for people who already have home charging to plug into it - these people don't need it - it's to make it feasible for people who can't get home charging to own an EV. In order to accomplish this goal, public charging needs to have lots of spare capacity so that people can feel like they can depend on finding a charger available, even as the EV market share grows, without needing to depend on somebody outside their control to recognize the increase in demand and install additional capacity. 259 chargers may seem like a lot, but this is a level where somebody who lives in an apartment nearby and commutes from this station daily can feel confident that if they buy an EV, they will have no trouble charging it in the foreseeable future, even if they lack the ability to charge at home. Had the station decided to put in only 2 chargers instead of 259, people would not have such confidence, so when the time comes to choose their next car, they'll go with gas. So, even if it may be expensive, this does seem like the right thing to do. And also, the fact that users need to supply the cables drastically reduces the financial cost of massive charger overbuilding, which makes installations like this financially possible. The U.S. definitely needs to do something similar.

When you distinguish AC vs DC charging what you actually mean is low power/low speed charging vs fast charging. Fast chargers are always DC; slow chargers can be AC or DC but are usually AC. You actually mean AC slow chargers vs DC fast chargers which is easier written as level 2 vs level 3 chargers

When you drove through and found that almost all the cars there were ICE cars tells you something. If all the spaces at this parking facility also came with AC charging, that would be ideal. It doesn't matter where you park your EV, because you have access to a charger everywhere. Also, you don't have to worry about being iced out of a charging spot, or have another fully charged EV just sitting in the only spots available for EV charging, waiting for his or her owner to come back from work so you can plug in. However, you didn't mention if this was the case. It looked to me that there were a lot of ICEd spots there. There are questions that have that would make this type of installation effective. This is a place between cities you said. Are the homes in this area high density without dedicated places for the people living there to park? The reason I ask is that this would necessitate a place other than home where EV owners can charge. Next question is, do people who live nearby but don't have access to charging at home also don't have access to public transportation to get to the train station? This would necessitate them having to drive their EVs to the train station in order to commute to one of the two cities which, I assume are at a distance from this location. The reason I ask is that AC level 2 charging is only useful with 300 mile ranges on average for EVs now days when you have a long period of time to charge. If people in the area of the train station don't have home access to charging, odd for a non-urban area, and they don't have access to bus service to the train station, also odd but what do I know it may be the case, then their only opportunity to charge for long periods of time is while they are at work at such a facility. Are there a large number of hotels in close walking distance to the train station? Hotels that don't have charging available to their patrons? A facility like the one above might encourage Europeans to purchase an EV since they can put it into use right away for their commutes without having to wait for their level 2 chargers to be installed at home. However, once they get a home charger installed they probably will be happy to park in a normal parking spot without the extra expense of having to pay for the electricity at a commercial charging station. I think their money would have been better spent on having 20 DC fast chargers at a nearby shopping/restaurant district and maybe 50 AC level 2 chargers at the train station for that specialized group that doesn't have access to dedicated parking and charging overnight at home in the suburbs.

The chargers could even be limited to the same 11 or 12 KW. At any rate, it's going to be fun to see the evolution of charging infrastructure as time goes on and it gets more accessible and efficient. Thanks Kyle.

Kyle please show us all sites including the AC ones. You never know when somebody around the world say's that a cool idea lets do that here. I will say this though on the AC pricing that I believe it should be closer but more to what you would pay at home though. Just like gas with 3 levels of octane rating with 3 different prices. Charging price should be based on charging speed IMO.

I also much prefer if station has it's own cable. Time saver - and for me time is priceless. It's somewhat good that regulation forces chargeports to make be able to pay with credit cards. But it's still amazes me that NOONE ELSE (other than Tesla) has so good user experience. You just plug and go away. Don't have to worry about currency, RFID chips, or using WRONG roaming cards. I hope all above clears out soon, because long distance trips are problematic if you don't own Tesla.

There is convenience in having the station provide its own cables. But buying 250 of them would have dramatically increased the costs to the operator, and possibly made the whole project uneconomical. I think a bring-your-own-cable model is more efficient, and the amount of time it takes to get the cable out of the trunk is still far less than it would take to make an extra stop at a DC charging station on the way home.

These types of sites are great where you are going to leaving your car for hours or days, but there is still a need for functional fast-charging sites, especially in the US where driving distances are much higher than in Europe. Both types of sites should be built in the US, but as yet they are not. Europe is FAR ahead of the US once again.

Impressive site. Kyle, do you know how Germany currently generates their electricity? I heard that after the Japan nuclear power station disaster, Germany decided to decommission all their nuclear power stations. They were using a lot of coal, and Russian supplied natural gas before Putin invaded Ukraine. I wonder if they've been able to build enough renewable sources of power generation to compensate by now? If not, then German EVs aren't that green.
