Imagine spending eight or nine months alone at sea: no GPS, no phone - just you, your boat and the endless ocean. #TheLoneliestRace #GoldenGlobeRace #GGR
Set against the backdrop of the world's most punishing seas, The Loneliest Race is an intimate
documentary that delves into the emotional and physical trials of sixteen sailors in the Golden
Globe Race.
This non-stop, 50,000 km solo sailing race is the world’s longest and most mentally
grueling sporting event, pushing competitors to the limit with no fuel, no technology, and
complete isolation. Only six sailors have ever successfully completed the GGR.

How could you possibly leave out Kirsten saving Tapios life in a documentary about the 2023 GGR? Unbelievable!

The filmmakers would obviously have loved to include the rescue in the film, unfortunately there is virtually no footage of it. Anything Tapio recorded is at the bottom of the ocean along with his boat, and Kirsten wasn’t able to film it. But, we’re grateful that part of the story has been well documented in news articles.

Nice documentary. Thank you CBC. We need you to cover more sailing in Canada and around the world. Last June, in Quebec city, there were a transatlantic race from Quebec city to Larochelle in France. Unfortunately no media showed up that day :( This is where we need a public broadcaster to jump-in.

Despite knowing the results, this made me cry. The sheer courage it takes moment by moment. Nothing - NOTHING - like it. Deepest respect for ALL the sailors - whether you finished or not. I would be honored to shake your hands. 🙏⛵

Abilash is a total monster! Nicest guy ever too. You could tell just looking at Kirsten’s eyes that she was not going to lose for anything. I feel honored to have sailed in Les sables d’olonne and to have met and hung out with The Don and had breakfast with coconuts and Ian and Simon. One of the highlights of my life, I was very lucky to have experienced that.

GREAT question - there wasn't much footage of Tapio's rescue (for obvious reasons) and time was too tight to include! :(

Indeed. Great video and Ian's rescue and Kirsten's finish had me misting up all over. Unfortunately you cannot claim to tell the 2022 GGR story without mentioning Tapio, even if it is not part of the main story you are trying to tell.

Believe us (and the filmmakers), Tapio's story would certainly have made it front and centre. Unfortunately there is virtually no footage of it as anything Tapio recorded is at the bottom of the ocean along with his boat, and Kirsten wasn’t able to film it. We’re grateful that part of the story has been well documented in news articles though.

That could have been so much better. I followed the race and it was exciting. This documentary was actually kind of boring. Very disappointing honestly. Sorry to be so negative, but I feel like I could’ve done a better job and I don’t even know how to make a documentary.
