5 years ago I build a quadcopter using exact same motors. I even also designed a frame on 3mm acrylic sheet which is cut using CO2 laser. I even use electrical tapes, and cable ties to held it together. Then, i fly it using turnigy controller and crashed it immidiatelly. That was my first quadcopter build. I saved a money from a school pocket money to buy the cheapest components. I also watched Flitetest on how to build it. I am having fun on those days and I am quite proud of it.

Interesting. I have been considering cutting a 2.5 inch frame from 1/8 inch LEXAN plastic. The stuff is crystal clear and pretty strong. It is stronger and less brittle than Acrylic plastic. Plus, LEXAN is available in different thicknesses. Yeah, Botgrinder cut a clear yellow acrylic frame that busted into pieces on first crash. Although some AIOs are rated for 55A and even 60A, I don't think that 16x16 stack is rated that high.

If it snapped like that it isn't polycarbonate, most likely acrylic (plexiglas). If you're going to cut a polymer frame like that why not go just a little bit further and add support struts from the top plate to the arm to increase rigidity though?
@TheEvilVargon5 ай бұрын
I've flown drones that I've printed out of TPU. I think this would have flown decently but shattered into a million pieces in a crash. A 3d printed petg top plate would have the most similar properties to the laser cut acrylic.

Hand on a second guys... AIO VTX actually seems smart. Remove ALL vtx chips and OSD chips from the FC and just have the camera handle it all. use passthrough to flash the camera and OSD settings. Those racerstars take me back. Actually pretty good but bent a few in minor crashes, for the price you couldn't beat them though.
@Nkkdxn45j5 ай бұрын
In my opinion, some of your comments are fair, and some aren't. The frame probably won't work so that is fair. With that degree of flexibility it will probably be impossible to get the control loops stable with any reasonable degree of gain. I see in your other video it climbs once armed, that is what you would expect with oscillations in the motor outputs - I've had that happen as well on too thin CF frames. I've made successful plastic (3D printed) frames up to 2.5" prop, but above that usually have to add too much weight for stiffness. That isn't to say you can't do it, but you need to make use of the Z axis in the design. CF frames are flat because that's how the sheet comes and few have the facilities to mould it to other shapes. But, with plastic and 3D printing, that is easier and might be worth some experiments. The best compromise for stiffness vs weight I've found is a sandwich of (usually 1mm) CF and polycarbonate filler. The CF top and bottom are CNC routed, the polycarbonate 3D printed. It definitely wins the stiffness / weight stakes over straight CF, but in a crash, is unsurprisingly less strong, so it's a tradeoff. Nothing wrong with Racerstar motors, I've had a few (smaller ones) over the years and they were fine - still got some. They were cheap, it's a tradeoff with cost. That matters to some people. The same applies to AIO cameras. In all engineering designs, such as quadcopters, there are tradeoffs to be made. In cameras and VTxs those tradeoffs are image quality, range, size, weight and cost. AIOs tend to win on the last three, lose on the first two. It depends what your priorities are, and that depends on you, your resources and where you fly. I've got quite a few AIOs knocking around, together with separate analog cameras and VTxs, and absolutely no digital. Why? AIOs are cheaper than analog separates, but tend to be limited to 25mW, however, here, that's all that is legal anyway. I have found much less difference between dipole and other antennae than one might expect. Caddx Ants usually have better image quality, but some AIOs are quite good these days. Digital - for me and my type of flying, and it's purely my personal tradeoff - is too expensive, big and heavy (even HDZero) for the quality benefits. I do not see my ever buying digital until the price and weight come down to analog levels, or, more likely, in the end analog disappears, pushed out by ever increasing movement to digital. So, basically, I think he's made some interesting choices, it's neatly done though the camera needs securing, and the only one I suspect definitely won't work is frame flexibility. If you are competing, and all that matters is winning, then you need to maximise everything, but some people have less resources and just like experimenting with different technologies. I'm one of them.
