Which was an engine a guy made himself, that managed to make RPG Maker 2000's demo story look impressive and whose aesthetic be "MS paint OCs on early DeviantArt drawn by clearly 12 years old kids". It's both broken AND un-speedrunnable because even with a way to skip half the game it's still like 4 hours of slog and battle mechanics that manage to ALMOST work as something innovative and then faceplant and cover you in its broken mess. And the game manages to be both full of cliches and yet to assemble them in the most awful, nonsensical, unpredictable ways possible and STILL end up generic and managing to never explain ANYTHING, and drop plot points like a sieve drops water. It was being sold on Steam. For 20 bucks. And now the almost as broken 3D remake of the first game is the only version to play it legit and also asks for 20$. Neither has a speedrun community, when even Hoshi Wa Miru Hito does. They're so bad that the original The Demon Rush had two speedruns and that's it, and the 3D remake was speedran once.

The blue-green on green trees, everything butting up right against one another, a mess of noise everywhere... it's legitimately eye-melting pain. A game that cripples you permanently just by looking at it... all the other problems are honestly tertiary and minor to that. The in-battle art is quite good, though diminished by choosing to put those frames around every unit in the battle. They distract and diminish their quality, making everything feel cramped and boxed-in. It's kind of a shame that if the.... everything else were competent, this could have been a little franchise like Glory of Heracles. .... I'm horrified that there's a playlist of the OST because of course there is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooC2coacbNCBeaM ..... it's annoying there's sparks of competence here and there, too. Quest 64 wasn't bad. It was okay. The hyperbole surrounding it is ridiculous.

After seeing the video I think I'd have to agree. It's one thing for an RPG to have terrible story, or a non-existent plot, or to have bad mechanics, or too much grind, or be too primitive, it's another thing entirely when half of the game's systems don't even work properly. It's basically what half the Triple A games are today that get released as buggy messes that crash constantly. Don't matter how good or bad your game appears, if stuff doesn't work, it's going to suck. There's plenty of other 8 bit games that are way more competent and it baffles me that the game was actually released in such a state. Did nobody in a QA department go "uh guys, this isn't the final release candidate, is it?" or anything? Seriously.
@neoqwerty8 күн бұрын
There was, apparently, no QA department. Like, this game is such a fuckin' mystery EVEN TO JAPAN that we don't know its actual release date. If you see a release date for it, it's a lie, because the "real" answer is that there's a bunch of conflicting info when you actually get around to asking. And the game was made by a whole total of three people who used pseudonyms, one of which is not identified, one who was _probably_ Naoki Morishima, the main programmer at Hot-B's development subsidary Another (not to be confused with a bassist guy with the same name, probably?), and one who a Japanese superfan named Torosshan deduced was probably the creator of the game and its writer, Okinaka Hidemitsu. (Dude also has writing credits for the VN "The Angels With Strange Wings".) There's been a storyboard artist (admkino) who shared stuff on Twitter, too, so we know an art team probably existed. But that's it. That's all we know. As far as ANYONE can tell, there's only three people who worked on this (admkino as artist, Naoki Morishima as programmer, Okinaka Hidemitsu as project lead/writer, MAYBE as programmer). There was no bugtesting around as far as ANYONE can tell.

This was common even on the NES, not just the Famicom. Alot of games released as unfinished buggy messes. Most people just don‘t remember those games.
@Dhalin7 күн бұрын
@@eightcoins4401 And that's the way it should be, the buggy messes rarely made it out of Japan or if they did arrive here, a few people bought them but then nobody cared about the games and they faded away into obscurity. There are a few notable exceptions of course, but nothing quite as bad as this.
@KasumiRINA4 күн бұрын
@@eightcoins4401 even well remembered RPGs were horrendously buggy, half the magic statuses in NES Final Fantasy don't work, Only one of two Magic Evade and Evade stats are used for both in FFVI, you can vanish/doom bosses in 6, or phoenix down one hit destroy undead in most of them. Fallouts have 1000s of fixes in fan patches, Daggerfall softlocked you in some quests, Baldur's Gate has NPCs send you on orphaned quests, RPGs are complex beasts and even best ones have issues. Some games even had cartridge re-releases because bug broke save games or something, for example WWF No Mercy, which isn't a kusoge but TO THIS DAY considered by many the best wrestling game of all time. Broken on release. Plastic & silicon was recalled. So yeah, even with the games that ARE very famous, people tend to downplay of forget what horrible mess they were released as, and many bugs became staples in speedruns so they keep them in remasters... and some like KOTOR 2 are never finished.

I wouldn't place Quest 64 on the list for bad rpgs. If one takes the time to understand, play, and appreciate Quest 64 as well as look into its history and development you will find that Quest 64 is indeed a hidden gem and one worthy of game preservation. I understand that people will say it's boring and a slog fest, but the rpg is intended to be more of a realistic slice of life style rpg with magic thrown in and the story is heart warming imo because you play as a boy desperately trying to save his father no matter what or what you might have to face. It's an American take on the genre and a shame it didn't pop off because I am quite honestly exhausted and burnt out with almost every new rpg copying the jrpg formula.

In that series all exact HP and MP values are invisible, instead you have to gauge it based on your character's facial expression outside of battle, and reaction text during battle. @@madaraman27 This is a "agree to disagree" type thing. I prefer the oldschool turn-based or ATB systems (or Turn Priority like X/Shadow Hearts 2/3), and having direct control over my characters, and I can't say I'm a fan of how on-rails the whole thing is. I've gotten like 5-6h into the game and I still have zero control over where to go or who is in my group.

I feel like the main difference is that back then, a lot of bugs weren't things you would actively notice while playing the games. They either had very obscure triggers, or they might cause something to not function in a way that you either wouldn't realize isn't functioning, or you'd just assume that the function you're getting is the intended function. Whereas nowadays, games much more frequently suffer from bugs that are more blatant, and impossible to either ignore, or not notice at all.

The difference is that then a disastrous launch was a failure instead of standard operating practice, and you probably didn't pre-order it

Good video, it has a nice explanation and pacing! However, your microphone is a little too hot and it's ringing and clipping constantly. Try turning the gain down 15% or moving a few inches away and then in your editing software boost the volume if it's too quiet.

Limited to _professional_ RPGs that _I have played_ , the worst is Phantasy Star 3 followed by Final Fantasy 8. Which somewhat shows how good I've generally been at finding out if an RPG is any good before deciding to play it. If you include unprofessional RPG Maker tier amateur hour games, I've made things worse than what you've played. I've played horrors far worse than the laziest slop I made myself, using the same engines.

And the story was looking so decent at the start of the video too. Not great but not terrible. Your characters “aging” up as they grow stronger is a fun idea even. But literally every aspect of gameplay looks terrible. Kind of interesting in trying it out of gross curiosity but know I’d drop it after 5 minutes.

Final Fantasy 8? I know a lot of people dislike FF8, but come on... it has some of the most awesome parts in the series! The entire parade sequence at the end of Disc 1, the war of the Gardens, the time compression sequence... It's all so COOL!!
@scottydu813 күн бұрын
@ I find not a single thing about FF8 enjoyable. It’s simply too convoluted in its mechanics. The characters were whiney. The story had way too many coincidences. The actual final boss was like a matryoshka doll. FF6 was the true pinnacle, in my opinion. Kefka was the best villain.

The Infernal Tome is the worst I seen. I had to play it on a challenge to finish every realtime blobber in existence (the list had 55 games and I finished almost all by now). TIT have 3 chapters and in each fighters lose their ability to deal damage half way through due to bugs. The game have multiple gamebreaking bugs in general and play like a choppy slow mess even when running the game at a modern computer (it's a DOS game) making it hard to use the games main menu. The story is insultingly bad as well. There is a delay in how the game play voice clips causing frequent delays which make the spoken text excruciating to listen to. It looks like someone completely incompetent did the game but it also seems that it was at one point sold.

My measure of a quality RPG is by checking if COSTUMES and CONVERSATION actually have a effect on the plot . Also , checking if the game can be completed without VIOLENCE or RNG dice rolls . If a game fails to offer these four features , then in my opinion : the game is a unplayable mess .

Costumes having effect on plot? O_o so by your definition, 99.9% of RPGs are literally unplayable, starting with Baldur's Gate and Fallout and ending with Elder Scross and Final Fantasy, so, everything that isn't Costume quest or the Hat in Time or something.
