I swapped from braid to 20 lb mono and started landing the sharks from the beach. It kept happening even with 8ft leader and after talking to some guys that target sharks I learned the sandbars cut that braid when it's under high tension. I've hooked 4 since I swapped and got them all to the beach. Might try rigging 1 heavy setup specifically for this.

What I found surf fishing in NY around Long Island was some of the bigger blues, sharks and Striped Bass are metal shy. When I started using plastic coated wire leaders and like you did with single hooks my catch rate went up. It was also easier to retrieve a single hook than a treble especially when it went deep. Just my two cents

Blacktips jump just as much as Spinners. Good mono will give just enough sometimes to avoid the tail whip as opposed to no give braid which is quite often not very shock resistant.

Go to a 30 lb mono main line and a 5 ft. Wire leader and it will make a huge difference in your break off ratio on sharks. Shark scales (the sand paper effect) grab those strands of braid and reduce the effectiveness to each strand. So even if you are using 50 lb braid the shark only has to abraid say 7 lb threads. With all the movment and stress you get from a shark that is like using sewing thread on them. Even if you do a double leader to keep casting distance you will come out way ahead. Keep your braid then double uni knot or some other 10 ft of 50 lb mono then your wire and lure. This set up will put Bruce in the sand!

Good video as always. I'll be bull redfish fishing soon. My biggest concern will be tying strong knots.. especially the leader to line knot. I don't use a leader very often. I was wondering if that was the knot that was giving you problems or did it actually break off.
@TopSecretAsiant2 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3XMoWeVmpmWZrc I tie a fg knot and this video explains how to tie it extremely well. If this link does not work look up “Briggsy fg knot” it is an Australian KZbinr. This knot does take sometime to get good at. If you use small diameter leader like 20lb you can tie the surgeon knot, really easy not as strong compared to fg knot

Those black tips and spinners wrap themselves up alot when they jump and eventually fray the line and break off. I like to use a good 15 feet of 100lb mono FG knotted to 60lb braid when I target them. Of course still use 1 to 2 feet of wire straight to your hooks/popper, but a good rule of thumb is to always double your leader size for the shark you are trying to catch and an FG knot will still allow you to cast it through your guides

Didn't scroll through all the comments so don't know if this was mentioned. What we have done with a high rate of success is use a section of much heavier braid attached to the mainline before the leader. For example, 30lb main line, 5-6' of 100-150lb braid, leader of choice, lure. The knots on the braid will still pass through the guides well enough that you won't lose too much casting distance.
@thomascomeau29612 жыл бұрын
"Bruce" - It is always tough not being able to get that big fish in and getting bit off. Been there a lot of times and sometimes you just got to move on and do something else or you will go crazy. Fun video because from experience it's no always a successful day of catching and we all have these days, weeks, or months when targeting fish.

Dude those spinners are hard to beach. Ive hooked a few. They breach and spool the line on their bodies and make it suuuuper hard to not get frayed off. Thicker cast leader 100+ with about 30ft might help. Suffix mono main might also assist. Sucks though that you dont get the capacity but the mono main helps to cushion those head shakes.

If you switch to mono to keep from the abrasion or cuts to braided line under high tension, try some XT by Trilene. It comes off the spool more like wire. I use big plugs and it casts them really well.

@comfortablynumb93422 жыл бұрын
That's a great way to catch a cobia. I don't know if they come close enough there but I've hooked them close to the beach in Sarasota FL. They're easy to mistake for a shark at a distance. Sooner or later you'll get one if you toss poppers. You can add 2' of leader on the back hook eye and put a light jig dangling under the popper. You'll catch fish on the jig too, like a popping cork that catches fish. I've had it work for snook. Just an idea you might not have thought about.

I agree with the other comment about using mono. I had good luck using 20lb mono with a short 18 inch stranded coated wire leader and cutting off the clip and directly attaching wire to split ring. Casting suffers a bit compared to braid but your rig will last much longer. Compared with the 65 lb braid plus leader used before I had a 400% increase in landing them. I also think the huge stretch of the mono keeps the lure pinned when they jump out and shake compared with braid and gives you a huge shock absorber. Good luck brother and eat one of those, they are delicious.

If I were having this problem, I would try lengthening my mono leader to 10 to 15 feet and/or switch to a reel with mono instead of braid.

Steelon leaders! Make them longer so you can still get good casts. Top water bite is always insane!

Bruce 😂 I really appreciate you making videos the whole family enjoys watching you fish man.
@onthefritz66232 жыл бұрын
I think you need to have a much longer topshot of mono on your heavy surf fishing rigs. Mono stretches, but it's much more abrasion resistant than braid. Have the braid as backing to the mono. Might keep those sharks from chafing you off.

Use a six or seven foot long steel leader. That way if the line wraps around the shark's tail your good. Depending on how long the shark is
