I know there's some old boats that just use end grain balsa as a inner hull insulator but even that as they found on Sailing Atticus 2.0 can rot and and become a home for mould. Same with using open cell foam it just gets waterlogged ... It's just bad practice given modern materials and alternatives. Besides most of the best balsa has ended up being built into wind turbine blades. Given their life spans that's a waste of a rare hardwood and forest. It's time to get away from GRP anyway.. Basalts stronger more resistant and ten times greener to produce in terms of energy water and carbon.. best of all it doesn't itch and its an insulator inert and impervious to osmosis ...

As a teenager in the 1970s I got my first introduction to working with fiberglass, at 15 my parents divorced and I moved from the Adirondacks of NY to the Green Mountains of Vermont. Got my first job at a place called Vermont Tubbs, making Keewaydin canoes and kayaks. My job was to cut all the fiberglass cloth patterns for each model and size canoe or kayak. It didn't take long to start getting a rash on my wrist where the cut cloth would ride as I cut through it, still being a kid, I had no idea that I was making it worse by going home after work and taking a hot shower. When I had a Dr. look at the rash he told me to start showering in cold water as the hot water opens your pores allowing the fiberglass to get into your skin, while cold water closes the pores forcing the microscopic fibers back out of the pores... It's not going to eliminate all the itching, but drastically reduces it.... I'm sure you folks knew this already with your vast experience with fiberglass, but if anyone reading this who is considering working with fiberglass head my warning... COLD showers can be your friend...
@ssn6087 ай бұрын
In contrast.... when I accidently got the worst caise of poison ivy encounter of my life... my doctor said he'd never seen worse... HOT showers were my only relief. Stupidly hot showers that I would normally jump out of...but not scalding, of course - I slowly increased the heat to what I could bear without harming myself. The burning sensation killed the itching sensation, and was preferable. And went away after a while... until I moved and the water hit a previously cooler surface. (NOTE: THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, I'm not a doctor, and you should do what works for you. Excessively hot water can burn you, cause other medical issues, and probably even kill you. Don't do stupid things. Let me say that again: DON:T DO STUPID THINGS, even if you read about other people (even ME) doing it on the internet. I've done plenty of stupid things in my life. I've been lucky, for the most part. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?)

Lagoons have 5 year expiry dates. That was told to me by a manager of a well known charter company. Since Lagoons are usually intended for the charter market, they have to last 4 years while under the charter contract, then when the owner takes possession at the end of the contract, they have 1 year to enjoy the boat before it literally starts to fall apart.
@alexbrauninger36877 ай бұрын
They are designed for the charter market in places like Greece where there are two types of boats - motor boats and motor boats with masts. They don’t really see much action in those areas but are probably still knackered at 5 years

Actually, they probably do as it tells them where the issues crop up. If it can even go anywhere.

Colin, I sandblasted and painted offshore oil rigs and, in a shipyard, to pay my way thru college. I always used a hood with a fresh air supply to keep the silica dust out of my lungs. You should consider something like that to protect your long-term health. Because we are all immortal, until we're not. I think Lagoons and similar cats are made for island hopping in the Carribean & other island chains, not long-term ocean cruising. Your work ethic and skills are admirable. Hopefully the day will come when you can stop putting out "fires" and will just have to do regular maintenance.

To hear that Lagoon engineers, production crew, and management all get together on Monday mornings to watch the latest Parlay Revival video that dropped on Sunday, to get ideas of how they need to improve their production practices, and dicuss their progress to implementing the changes needed. And maybe... doing a quick internet search for "how to install a cleat" and read that backing plates are essential to a quality job so that the bolts won't pull through the deck. And then do a quick back of the head slap (a la Leroy Jethro Gibbs) to the person who was responsible for designing the cleat and pad-eye installations on the deck. Heck, I knew that 45 years ago, just by reading the directions that came with a cleat I bought. And film those meetings, and post in on Saturdays - to show they are responsive to customers.

Welcome to the world of the majority of production boats. They are built super light, super cheap. Not built to last or do long journey's. They are meant for a bit of coastal cruising and to look cool to your friends. I worked at a boat manufacturer where the owner was a cheap twit and insisted to use screws on the bow plate. And then the service calls came in when the masts started coming down. Then the recall. There is ENORMOUS pressure around the stays (amongst other places) but you would be surprised at the STUPID shit a lot of manufacturers do. Time exposes them all, but at great expense to the owners. Don't get me wrong, there are production builders that understand the forces at play. I am not easily impressed because I have seen a lot of crap in my life, but Sirius is one of the few volume production houses that builds 'em solid.

Many people who watch sailing channels on KZbin have made the leap to buy a boat and give the sailing lifestyle a shot. Dear Colin, after sanding, I would immediately wipe the face with a wet cloth. It looks cool, but you still breathe in the fine dust after removing the mask. Even 50 years ago, sailing was only for people with enough money, that's not much different today. A boat needs constant maintenance and repairs, but many people forget that. Such a boat is subjected to tremendous forces and automatically tires over time and this simply cannot be prevented. In some places the boat has to give in to torsional forces, in other places it has to be rigid. This is not easy to manage for a catamaran with two hulls and requires a lot of engineering and experience. I'm sure the Lagoon company is still watching your episodes with interest and, thanks to you, has a good insight into the daily use and wear and tear of the boat. I worked in the machine industry and a lot of things in the prototypes only became apparent after use, even though they were designed and calculated correctly. We built contraptions that ran the movements day and night and for months to see what it could handle. This doesn't work very well on a boat. Wish you all a good time at the Parlay Revival.
@growlith69697 ай бұрын
I told David Shih this trick, saved me quite a few times. If you want fiberglass out of your skin just grab a roll of duct tape and roll (don't blot) your skin with it. You can reverse roll it and use it like a lint roller, even regular lint rollers work okay, but the more aggressive the tape is the more fiberglass you pull out of your skin. Wiping it only drives it into your skin.

They make a tube of creme you apply before the work begins to keep the fiberglass out of your skin and it works real good. Try it once and you'll never sail without it, its that good.

A fiberglass boatbuilder (bay liner) told me his whole crew would fill spray bottles with 7up and spray down arms/hands, let it dry, end of the day sprays right off, nary an itch. I use sprite Myself, like the taste better

Awesome job Colin! I wish I was there, I'd be grinding it out and eating that fiberglass right with you, lol. What a job. Hoping for smooth sailing in your near future, you've earned it for sure. Give our best to the whole crew.

I worked fiberglass about fifty years ago and watching you grinding and sanding brought the memories of THE ITCH back after fifty years. Good Job!

I'm hoping fitment issues like this aren't a mass production industry-wide issue. It'll be interesting to see if these issues are Lagoon specific or not. Great video as always.

I really feel for you as I have done some fiberglass grinding and its gets in everywhere. And is itchy for days. One thing that does help is to cover yourself with talcum powder that fills up your pores and keeps the glass out. A pressure fed full face mask also works well .

What a team you & Jamo make, Col. Sometimes you just need that third arm & that last Timelapse showed that. Big shout out to Total Boat for their lifesaving products. You’re an awesome plug for an awesome product. I learn a lot through these boat works. Safe sailing team Parlay. 🤙🏽

Reminds me of buying a house. A few years after realized the builder did a horrible job on the plumbing so had to rip up some flooring to redo all that piping. Unfortunately you do not find out long after any warranty has passed!

…and that is only if the builder honours the “warranty”. Most don’t.
